It seems like, with technology, everything has to be faster. An example is the use of emoticons; (tongue sticking out) (Smiling and winking) (Sad face). :D (Wide grin.) With the right use of these symbols, you can use them to show any feeling! Instead of taking time to express feelings, why not use some of these emoticons to get the point across to the other person directly? None of your friends want to hear your problems out or be your psychologist.
Another example of the effects of technology is the use of abbreviations. Is something funny? How about using LOL (Laugh out loud), ROFL (Rolling on the floor), or LMAO (Laughing my a$% off) Even if it’s not funny but you know the other person was trying to be funny, use one of these to make it as if he/she is a comedian; make them feel like they’re something. Other examples of abbreviations are WTH (What the he!!); the H can sometimes be replaced with a F. Here’s a hint, the word rhymes with duck. Sometimes, people will even use abbreviations that never exist but who has the time to look that up?
The use of grammar and punctuation marks have also changed and it will affect the way people, mostly teenagers are writing (yes, not with a keyboard, but with an actual pen or a pencil.) Instead of writing “I’m going to do my homework” why not just type out “Im gonna do hw”? It means the same thing and unless the person doesn’t know a lick of English and the new, fast way to communicate in that language, they shouldn’t take the time to correct him/her or ask what hw stands for, and if you don’t know what it is, all I can say is sorry. (It stands for homework). Another use of proper English nowadays is the use of homophones, that is, if the person even bothers out to spell out the word instead of abbreviating it. An example is, “You’re a bad person.” Instead of typing or writing that all out, why not just say “Your bad person?” As long as the reader knows the overall sentence, it’s all good.
I hope this helped you understand the way people communicate in today’s world. It's no wonder that people who spend hours every day communicating like this have trouble with formal English, imo (in my opinion).
Please comment, give critisms! Also, some of the emoticons actually became yellow faces, so please excuse. Thanks
