I've been playing 3v3 bgh's and what not since like 6 or 7 years ago, but I just recently took the leap and started playing 1v1's. When I started on Luna and LT like 8 months ago, I went 32 games before I finally got my first win (not counting like 3 wins against even lesser opponents). Anyway, I went from an 80-90 apm noob to a 170 apm noob after playing something like 400 games, and now... i'm getting my ass kicked even harder. I recently moved to ICCUP from random b.net pubs, where I won about one in every 3 or 4 games and am currently something like 4-10 in ICCUP (3 of those wins are from an 80 apm noobtoss who kept asking re? lol).

Yeah, so I've won one real game in 11 games. Which seriously makes me wonder if i'll EVER be at the point where i win more regularly. The same problems that plagued my play back when i started are still there: Horrible macro, Not knowing when to expand, etc. Sure i've been getting better. When I first started I couldn't control my scourges at all and my defiler/scourge/lurker/ling micro was so atrocious I was better off sticking with mass lurkers/lings. But now in Late Game, rather than my combo macro/micro owning me, it's just my bad macro.

Doesn't matter though, I still lose. Now here's the kicker: I'm a guy who normally does very well in any video game. I kick ass at ddr and other rhythmn games, can hold my own in SSBM, 3s, and MvC2, I'm really good at fps's, double digit high scores in minesweeper, etc. BUT. I CANT GET BETTER AT SC NO MATTER WHAT. I've tried that apm training thing that BlueIris posted, I've tried mass gaming (I played like 8 games today with 0 wins). But no matter what I can't get better. Being 1-35 was discouraging, but since I had just started I decided i'd probably get better. now that i'm probably like 30-370, I have to wonder if that's actually true.

you have to make a conscious effort to get better. you know what your problems are. target them, fix them.

its true that you cant get better without mass gaming, but mindless mass gaming will get you no where. watch your replays, think about the game.
what the fuck do you have to say for yourself now you protoss jackass can you retaliate in any way

Save your losses, and ANALYZE them. Look at what the opponent did, look and what you did, and look for the errors. Typical errors are, not macroing during a battle, not scouting enough, not macroing enough, micro failures, etc. Concentrate during your games to play as well as you possibly can.

Download a LOT of replays of your race, then watch and study them. Notice their timings, counters to units, when they expo and how often etc.

Play a lot, and ACTIVELY THINK about what you are doing. If you don't know what he is doing, scout him. Look at the mini map constantly for his units, or his scouting probes/scvs. Pay attention to your resources and macro. During battles concentrate on microing, but also macroing off of your hotkeyed hatches (assuming you are zerg based on your icon).

Also, try to play opponents who are slightly better than you. IMO, thats a great learning tool as they will punish your mistakes, but they wont absolutely rape you. Even though iccup its hard to judge skill at the lower levels, an example would be like a D playing D+ level players, or C- playing C.

Basically to sum it up, watch replays, analyze your losses, and THINK when you are playing. Think about what you should be doing at that time, based on what you see better players doing, and follow through with it.

watch vods. i'm serious.
im 13-4 iccup with no 1v1 practice whatsoever (i play 2v2 when i feel lazy), just from watching VODs. I've seen almost every progame the last year i think and it did wonders!

Keep in mind that SC (especially ICCUP or whatever) is far more competitive than all your other video games. The people that will dl a special program and play on a private ladder of a 10 year old game are bound to be pretty good by default.

That's pretty true.

Agreed heartily with azndsh. I've played SC about the same amount as WC3, and I can easily win most random games of WC3 but I struggle hard to get any wins at SC.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

There really aren't that many people even here on TL.net that are that good, maybe about 20% are C rank or better, 20% are inactive bw players, etc...

I used to be in your shoes, I sucked ass. I was horrible, back with PGT (mainly seasons 1-2) I was getting lucky if i got even close to D+. I just mass played, and didn't change my style. That is what made me lose. Eventually, I studied my replays, understood why I lost, and practiced hard to improve it.

Now I'm playing at on ICCUP I'm 41-11 and I still think I suck to be honest. It's hard to decide when you have improved or not, because there are always people around the same skill level as you, and everyone else is also improving, so in order to become good, you have to improve faster than everyone else. It's a pain in the ass.

It takes time to get better, if you continue to play a lot/try and get better you will. fyi mass gaming to me is 20+games/day.

Thanks guys for encouraging me to push on. And I agree that ICCup is MORE competitive, but at my peak in 3s and Marvel, I was pretty good. I'd drive an hour to go to FFA (which hosts the best competition on the west coast), on friday nights because that's when pyrolee, amir and all those pros showed up. Of course, I'd get schooled most of the time, but in SC i get schooled most of the time by the noobs as well as the pros. :/

Anyway, I guess I'll just do what CaucasianAsian and Balloon say to do and really make an effort to get better each game instead of just playing and getting frustrated after losing.

When you play act as if you are playing against boxer/savior/bisu every game that way you try your best every game, when you lose learn from it, and don't get mad

I just watched Nal_rA replays all day during the summer.

Helped me out a lot, especially in PvZ, although it DID kill off my skill in PvP for some reason :-/

Your getting better with every game you play, as long as your actively thinking about what your doing right and what your doing wrong. That was you tend not to make the same mistakes over and over. Starcraft is a crazy awsome game because it rewards people for time played even at the highest levels. In many games, you get to a point and the skill level just seems to plateu, but this doesnt happen in starcraft.

If you really wanna see progress, view a replay of yourself from like 5 months ago. If you dont have one, record one now, then come back in 5 months, youll see a marked improvement.

The difference of skill level in SC is huge, thats why it's so successful. Keep fighting man. Watch pro replays and know what to do in each situation.

What you need is practice partners. Just losing a lot of games doesn't help you. You need to learn something new in each game you play. The way you do this is play with a some people who are at the same level of you, and let them give you feedback on what you did right and wrong in that particular game.

I think your problem is that you aren't learning enough from the games you play.

WIth amount of games you could be improving so much if you used each game to your advantage in your journey of improvement. If you were terran I might teach you (I'm not that good myself anyway) but since you're zerg I can't really help becuse its so different.
