Sometime around 1999 - 2000, I used to hang out with a friend who had this really nerdy step brother who never left his room. One day I decided I'd break in and see what the fuck he was doing all the god damn time (Obviously hoping it wasn't masterbating to gay porn). When I busted in all I saw was him spamming key strokes and flailing his mouse about while playing a game I'd never seen before. As you may have figured out...it was Starcraft!
I asked my friend if he played Starcraft like his step brother and he responded "Well I play but I don't play anything like him". I really wasn't aware of the different levels of gaming at this point in my life. Finally I got the nerve to ask his step brother to teach me how to play. His obvious response was "Fuck off, I don't have time for newbs." I didn't even know what the fuck a newb was.
Now I was perturbed and made it my mission to get him to play a game with me. Every time I went over there my friend and I would bust in his room and start annoying the shit out of him to the point that he couldn't play. He finally gave up and said he'd play a 2v2 with me. There were conditions though. I had to pick Terran and fly my CC to his base and just observe. I thought he had no chance 2v1 but I was wrong. He destroyed one with a 9pool and then straight up beat the other guy 1v1.
For those of you who may be wondering who this kid was (all one of you) it was the infamous Dudey aka ILNP
After that I went out and bought Starcraft and Brood War and began to play BGH ect. Seeing as it was high school and I played sports and got laid on occassion I didn't make a whole lot of time for BW until I was a little more comfortable with myself. I was to busy freshman and sophomore year trying to make a name for myself to have time for BW. Plus Ilnp had moved to S. Korea and then to Boston and I no longer had anyone to tell me how bad I was.
Really wasn't until my senior year that I entered the real Starcraft community. I had just started a new relationship with a sophomore and she was actually ilnps step sisters best friend. Ilnp had just gotten back from Boston and was living in his parents basement when we all (my girlfriend, ilnps step-sister and her boyfriend) decided we were going to invade his room and watch movies and just hang out. Take a guess what he was doing...don't worry I'll wait...if you guessed playing BW, you are correct! The whole time I was there I chatted with him and observed many of his games. This pissed my girlfriend off to no end.
From then on it was all BW all the time. I didn't talk to ilnp much during this time because I was obviously not cool enough to chat with him on bnet. I started play Low Econ games for the first time in my life. I was horrible.
Come graduation I had broken up with my girlfriend and pretty much hated anything to do with school related functions. I even skipped my own graduation. I remember looking through my phonebook randomly trying to find someone to do something with the same night as my graduation. Obviously this was tricky due to the fact that most of my friends were at graduation. But I just so happened to stumble into ilnps number. "What the hell," I thought "why not give him a call." So I called him up. The phone conversation went something like this.
Me - "Hey man what's going on?"
ILNP - "Nothing, just getting ready to go to a friends and watch a movie."
Me - "Sweet, would you mind if I tag along?"
ILNP - "Sure. You just want to come over to my house and ride with me?"
Me - "Ok. I'll be over in a few."
ILNP - "You need directions?"
Me - "Why the fuck would I need directions? I've been to your house a million times."
ILNP - "You have??"
Me - "Yes!?"
ILNP - "Well OK then I'll see you in a few."
When I show up at the door, he answers with a surprised look on his face.
ILNP - "What the fuck are you doing here?"
Me - "Umm I thought we were going to watch a movie."
ILNP - "Oh fuck dude...I totally thought you were someone else on the phone. No wonder you fucking know where I live."
Me - (Insert awkward laugh)"Yeah I thought that was an odd question. Still want to watch that movie?"
ILNP - "Sure. Why the fuck not?"
