Hey guys

It's been a minute, so for those that have joined since after I left or were here but forgot I ever existed, I'm one of those old school, no talent SC/BW players who switched over to poker in ~2004, hung out on TL's sister site liquidpoker and never really looked back. I've kept up with the ASL/KSL scene the past few years, and recently started playing some ladder.

I never had much mechanical skill (my apm in peak playing days was 110), but it wasn't that much of a hindrance in the early 2000s with less information available via streaming, so being strategically ahead of the most other foreign players was enough to keep me semi competitive in the foreign scene. However now every strategy/build/tactic/whatever spreads like wildfire, and being so mechanically inferior is a huge detriment in my play -- I can barely crack 1650 MMR on a good day.

Since I live near Blizzard HQ (~2 miles away), I figured maybe there were some fellow remastered fans in the area and was interested in grinding together in person and bounce ideas off one another.

The main reason for wanting to play in person is that I mostly want to watch mechanically how others approach the game in person and work on their speed and precision. It's pathetic, but my mouse clicking is so incredibly slow and imprecise that I have trouble with basic things like splitting workers, or selecting a lone templar in a battle to storm. Since I've watched a decent amount of pro streams/casts/VODs/tournaments and have experience at the highest levels of other strategy games, I can at least contribute some knowledge and help similarly skilled overall but mechanically superior players improve. But I suppose even talking things over online with others who have had similar issues or are similarly skilled would be helpful as well.

Anyway, if you're in the Blizzard HQ area and want to meet up, respond in the comments or shoot me a PM.

Or if you aren't in the area, but want a similarly skilled practice partner to bounce ideas off of and play some games that's awesome too.

if you guys could use google and post direct links to the maphacks here it would be greatly appreciated. - Nazgul

You should play single player. I wasn't a believer of this in previous years when I read about how Jangbi played single player, but it does work. This is what I do when I am playing poorly or have gone on a break. Half the battle of this game is being comfortable doing a build and not being thrown off. In single player you can focus strictly on the build order without having to be worried about being attacked/harassed. As you become more comfortable your speed will increase. An example for me was that I was not very good with f keys and now they are very natural to use.

I don't think you need to increase your speed very much. I have played some people in the 130-150 apm range and they are S or close to S, so I wouldn't necessarily worry much about speed as I would on hitting my build and making the right decisions. I realize 110 to 150 apm is about a 30% apm increase but I don't think that should be difficult to do over the course of a few months.

Did you every try sc2? I think it's pretty fun too and a bit more forgiving in terms of finding good games even if you suck.

Mb your mouse dpi is too high. Try using 400-800 and turn off mouse scaling and see if there is a difference in your acuracy. Also turn off the precision thing in your windows settings.

If your already know that shit then you need to practice ur precision.
1a2a3a micro use map setting is very useful for this.
Aimbooster.com is also great.

It's not so much the build orders that give me issue, but actual mouse clicking. Splitting workers, selecting a lone templar to storm, etc. But I still think it's good advice, can practice keeping a probe alive against a zerg computer while multitasking and running through the build. It's also a decent way to practice some timings, i.e. see when a 9734 build hits the front, and subtract cannon building time from that to know when is the latest possible time to build cannons to see how much I can get away with in base build.

Also, good to see you still out here grinding! Hope the years have been kind to you.

Haha, what's up man? It's literally been like 19 years since I hung out in LC playing vanilla SC and some of the BW channels. Every time I think of 1st~ all i can think of is Tsunami wrecking me off 1-2 base zerg with his one button mouse, gives me the shivers thinking about it.

I played some during beta and a little after, but I was less of a fan than SC1. I realize that the mass building/mass unit select makes things slightly easier for slower players, but I think it's actually a hindrance to me since I've always been a macro player, and making that aspect simple which forces me to focus more on my actual micro isn't the best game for my skills, but perhaps would help them improve. I'll maybe get back into it again in the future when I get some free time.

Another friend suggested turning precision off, did that. Set mouse DPI to 500 (assuming each click over is 50 and the left side is 200).

This aimbooster.com site is great, I'll mostly use that over the next week since I self banned myself from playing for another week via giving a friend a $100 freeroll if I play.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, good to see everyone.

i think practice always pushing yourself to be faster and do more things is best
i used to play pretty slowly in dota but after a few years i was pushing myself to do a lot more things (like checking everywhere on map every few seconds, more complex and busy movement like dragging creeps and individually clicking jungling creeps every attack, always checking other heroes items by cliking on them quickly).
in dota you're not punished for doing these things as hard as in broodwar where you are already critically busy, so i didn't find it too tough, it was just a case of willpower (by comparison my friend's apm and skill took a lot longer to increase because he never pushed himself to do extra things)
but the point is, i kept pushing myself and suddenly i realised i had developed masterful hand control and could run rings around my opponent
i guess in BW you need to choose between focusing on BO and focusing on practicing control, too hard to do both at once at first
but keep at it, if it's anything like dota then eventually having great control is really satisfying and i think it's something that will stick with you like riding a bike almost (after being able to do it for a couple of years anyway)
wish i lived near you id totally hang out lol

i really wonder if playing bw on slower speed setting is actually idea for new players, like you don't start off practicing piano or guitar at full speed, you just can't do it and it's miserable

what about jangbi and single player? there was a Belarusian player in sc2 LoweLy he always trained with bots and 2-0'ed MarineKing at WCG lol

Theres a few maps out there that literally just have you practice splitting workers, running around a worker while you macro from a zealot, cloning units, doing muta stacking and triangles vs scourge etc.
