Hello guys!
i think the topic says everything right? its not that i will do it for sure but i thought about it a lot in the past weeks.
Its like a small dream of mine and i got to a point that i wanna work some where in the E Sport scene and i still quit young, just 20, my study is not real filling me out as a person yes its fun and i like what i am learning in there but its not realy the thing i wanna do at this part of my life.
So i thought about going (semi) full time for like a year and see how it works for me if it work out i still can easly go back to a "normal" life and do my university.
I am still realy shaky about it but i talked to my family and my girlfriend about it they are not that excited about cause i am taking a risk but they said "if this is what you want do it and give it your best we stand behind you" so that makes me realy happy over all.
The reason why i am writing all this is, is because i thought that i may could ask you for your opinion and what do you think about my thoughts?
I just hope that i get some good and lot of great feedback !!!
Thank you all for reading and responding!

I don't think this is a good idea unless you already have viewership. If you haven't even started streaming yet, I think it's a bad idea. I would at least go to school/work while streaming and see if you can make it. It's hard to get a lot of viewers, especially to make a living.
|
Hm, are you serious? Seems insanely risky to me. I would finish university first and start streaming on the side. What makes you special - why should people watch you? (really good at a game ... top 1 % for example)
You have no experience with streaming yet? Well then its very unlikely to get viewers tbh. Viewers do not wait for Raxxes, the majority of streamers never gets above 5-10 viewers (this is probably already a success)
Seems like a wasted year! Yes you are young but i am sure you can spend your time better and start streaming after work/university. "Wanna work somewhere in the E Sport scene". streaming or esports? ... or maybe even change university/subject (seems like you are unhappy) If you wanna find out if esports is for you, contact esl, dreamhack, taketv and apply for an internships.

Seems like a wasted year! if this is his passion I don't think it's really wasted. even if he doesn't make it he will still get important life experiences and can then move on with a free mind instead of always thinking "what if I had done x". Also it's not like wasting a single year is that bad for his future career. So if it's really what you want to do I would do it but consider if you're really sure this is what you want to do.
|
If you're a new streamer, I don't think much will happen in a year unless you get lucky or fall under some kind of niche. I've known people who do it daily for quite a while and barely get 4 to 5 viewers stable. If you said part time while working, people wouldn't be so harsh. Full-time doesn't leave any room for much else.
If you want to do it, then go ahead. If you're stepping into this expecting a lot of viewers, it'll just demoralise you after awhile. If you have a viewer base already, then go for it. If you're new, I'd do it casually and wait until you have a viewer base before going full time.
|
I think you shouldn't (want to) ask validation from other people to do the things you want to do. 95% (asspull number) Of people won't stray from the societal ladder to follow desires that don't garner universal acclaim. If you're going to ask them for advice they're always going to tell you to do what they would do, aka "suck it up" rush out an education, get a job get married and worry about whether you should get a dog or a cat, or both.

If I had a girlfriend I would make a ton of money streaming her. All the Korean guys seem to do a bang-up job (no pun intended) by just streaming with their gf. Albeit bisu and a lot of the old school BW pros seem to have model girlfriends and that's a win. On the other hand, conversational streaming would be the wave of the future if anyone had the balls to do it. No one has the balls to do conversational streams other than I guess Kaitlyn and IncontroL , and that's mostly RPG time. Nothing wrong with transversing new terrain.

You're attempting to step into an arguably niche market that is highly competitive. There are thousands of other streamers with the same dream. Before you attempt this, perhaps you should ask yourself a few questions.
1. Do you have the skills or personality to be a streamer?
Streamers are successful based on those two merits. If you are mediocre at the game you wish to stream, why would anyone want to watch your stuff? Well than you need a great personality.
2. What game are you planning on streaming? If its of the variety kind, you definitely need the personality. Do you want to cast games? If so, how will you get the players?
3. What are your goals as a streamer? Do you have a long term plan with streaming? Or are you going to try it for a year only?
Don't just start streaming and hope for the best. If you truly want to make it work, you need to put a lot of effort, planning, and organization. Unless of course you are only doing it for fun, but judging by your post it seems you want more than fun. I'm not trying to deter you, I just want you to really ask yourself some hard questions before you decide.

Could you please give a few more details about your situation? Like how many years are left before you graduate, what are you graduating in, have ever streamed before, what are you "qualities" as a streamer, what do you plan on streaming etc...
The idea to start streaming on your free time is pretty good (if you are not already doing it),
Also you say you want to get into E-Sport and I didn't really get that part, do you want to be a part of E-Sport or do you want to become a Streamer, or both (if so how?, casting?hosting?playing?coaching [particular or teams] etc...)
And last if you have a few examples of person that inspired you to become streamer/e-sport related that could be great.
Ho and quick edit, do you wish to make a living as a streamer/es-port, do you want ot be involved in events once in a while, or make a bit of money but plan on working on the side? (liek you start streaming full time, you get known, you get a schedul for example)?
|
only do it if you have a backup plan.. never risk it all.. you may regret it later on ... Best of luck

Gurderoy added a few more great questions you have to answer.
You are young, so I will add that you should do it! But don't spend too much time trying to succeed with it. You have to learn when to keep going, and when to cash in at the casino and get the fuck out.

seems like a terrible idea.
your studies should come first. if you want to make it as a streamer fill all your other available hours with streaming and see how it goes.

But I agree with you about studies. I think the OP should finish school first, then take a year to try out streaming. Similar to many grads that will take a year to travel before starting a career.
OP, finishing school before trying to be a streamer gives you an immediate fallback plan. If you try to stream now, it might interfere with school and prevent you from doing your best. It also gives you a long term goal which is important in life. As well, gives you time to fully plan out your stream.
However, if you want to stream now, do so sparingly and with a singular goal in mind. That goal is streaming only to figure out all the kinks, bugs, technology, and potential problems that might arise.

First off all thank you all for that more or less great feedback and all the things you said i should think about. I will try to answer most of the questions and say something to terms that i think are relevant!
So lots of you guys said that it is a bad idea if i never streamed before/had any followers or viewers at all. To answer that part i am streamer some now and then for more then one year and i reached more then 1k followers and got quit some viewers on a good day more then 10 !
I know how hard streaming can be cause i got some experience about it. I learnd a lot when i was working for TakeTV so i am not totaly stupid and just think i can make something out of nothing. Its not like that i just wanna stream some random hours a day and hope that i can get viewers.
Seems like a wasted year! Yes you are young but i am sure you can spend your time better and start streaming after work/university. I think thats what most people would say but thats the reason why i want to make it now cause after i finished university i am like 24 and then i am to old for myself to try things like that cause right now i have the support by my family and friends right behind me and i do not know if i am still so hyped to do it in 4 years so thats the reason for me to think about it now.
1. Do you have the skills or personality to be a streamer? I think i have a good personality to entertain people and i believe in myself that i can entertain my viewers and thats the most important part right? I do not wanna sound arrogant do not get me wrong here! I am not sure if this will work out and i know that not everyone likes me but i just believe in myself when it comes to that.
2. What game are you planning on streaming? Mostly Starcraft cause the came that realy owns my heart. But i am open to more games and i will stream more then just starcraft.
3. What are your goals as a streamer? Do you have a long term plan with streaming? Or are you going to try it for a year only? My Goal is not to make a living out of it in a year! I do not think that this is possible! What i wanna "test" is if i can make it to get a good amount of viewers and if it would be possilbe for me if i spend more time, not sure if you understand what i am trying to say here :/.
And last if you have a few examples of person that inspired you to become streamer/e-sport related that could be great. There is no person directly its overall just a a great thing for me i love to be conected with other people to entertain them. Its not about beeing famous or anything its about the part that i like to entertain others cause i realy love streams that are entertaining me.
do you wish to make a living as a streamer/es-port, do you want ot be involved in events once in a while, or make a bit of money but plan on working on the side? I think i said a bit bad in my first post! I do not wanna make a living out of streaming in this year and i will NOT QUIT UNIVERSITY i just wanna write 2 instead of 5-6 exams a semster to get more time to stream and do youtube or travel to some events like ESL One Cologne for example. I will still study but less to stream a lot more!
The only terrible idea is a wasted idea. All ideas have potential, its only until you try it do you realize if its viable. Thank you! for that quot!
And for everyone yes my plan b is still finishing school and get a normal job ^^ btw i am studying IT !
Hope i answered most of the importen questions I am sorry for my bad english and if i missed any questions.
Thank you again for your great feedback hope i will get some answers to this post too!

First of all, making a living out of streaming alone is just way too risky, you have nothing to fall back on really, unless you have more than a 1000 viewers on a daily basis, partnered with twitch and the majority of those 1000+ viewers being subscribers (and donators make a huge difference too).
Secondly.. StarCraft? Sorry, wrong game at the wrong time, StarCraft has been in a massive decline (streaming wise) that it's definitely not a title where you can go full stream and make a stable and decent living out of it. Go with the hype, Overwatch, CSGO, LoL, Dota, if you're really entertaining H1Z1 can be a good choice, but go with the hype, go with the new titles if your goal is to get as many viewers as possible on a constant basis, after that, you can "settle down" and play only like 2 or 3 games, or even just 1 and then you'll get known as the guy who streams THAT specific game, but even there you can't afford to stream a game like StarCraft for example, I mean.. StarCraft is way past its prime for streamers, I even have to scroll down on the list of games on twitch to find StarCraft whereas a few years back, it was a constant top 10 game in terms of viewers.
3rd of all, you're studying IT!!!!! After you're done with your studies you can get a job pretty much anywhere anytime, IT is like THE future, and you want to use that as a plan B?! For real?!
I'm 24, didn't give a crap about my studies, didn't complete them either and now I'm stuck at a job I don't like.. what am I going to do? Gonna study IT while working part time, once I get my degree finished I can go anywhere I want, if I have any crazy ideas or dreams, I can still go for it, but having a stable income (in other words: a stable life) is very important.
My advice is, make a hobby out of it, do it during your free time, when you get home from college etc..a friend of mine who has an amazing job streams when she's done working and it's basically an extra income for her, sometimes getting donations up to 3000$, but those are the rare donations, 5$-50$ from like what.. 10 people at most when she streams? But it's an EXTRA, and personally I believe that's the way to go, study, get a job you love and if you still want to stream after getting into the world of the working man, then do it, but start off small, stream when you're home, make a schedule even, so your viewers know when you're going to be streaming and that's how you can build up your viewership but leaving everything behind just to "test" it? It's definitely NOT a smart move.
Don't forget, to get partnered with Twitch you need a certain amount of viewers on a constant basis, so you could be streaming for a year without being able to get subscribers even, so take it slow, finish your studies, stream during your free time if you want (using a schedule) and go from there, but don't drop anything just for your streaming dream, because you'll be disappointed if you do it like that.

Well you seem to have a good idea about the risk/reward trying to become a streamer, so I think you should try it. As long as you don't have delusions of making a great living being a streamer, then you should be fine.
Mind you, there are a select few that can survive being a live streamer, but that is few and far between.
I met a full-time minecraft streamer, and she could make more at McDonalds part-time. Fortunately, her boyfriend makes a decent living, so her stream income supplements his.
If you have a dream, you need to go for it. You might realize the dream doesn't work out, or you might start living your dream. Either way, you will find out the truth.
The goal is to keep moving forward, whether that's as an IT professional or full-time streamer.

Having back up plans are what create less successful people. Very counter intuitive indeed. Pick what you want and do it. Careful what you ask for, you might just get it.
|
Pretty much all the most successful streamers and youtubers and people working with online audiences started off small, built their audiences while working, except for people who's parents for some reason didn't mind paying for them. For the rest, they only quit their jobs once they were able to sustain themselves with the revenue from their work online, or they clearly would be if they could put more time into it. It's especially hard to crack the market now because a lot of people go directly to their favorite streamers, they don't browse for new ones.
If you can't build an audience of a few hundred people, hell if you can't round up around 1k+ by streaming a couple hours a day, pouring more time into it won't lead to a sustainable living income.
Guess I'm late to the party.
