Those spice are just way too much to have at home. The pre-mix is used by Indians themselves I wouldn't say it's completely cheating.
It's just extremely ineffecient to try to re-construct the right mix, a curry has about 20 things in it

asking my friend to comment on how his indian roomate cook

me:
also if u can ask him do indians make curry
from scratch
or do they buy the pre-mix
like a usual indian, not a full time cook

friend:
He buys premix i think

Yes , this is true. Curry mix gets used many times if u want to make it quick as all the ingredients are not available at home quite a few times but many Indian homes also use saperate self made herbs and spices to make curry .it really uplifts the taste after using real homemade 'masala'.

Nah..what u have is also a 'masala' ,so it's totally fine to use .additionally, u can use bay leaves 1 or 2 if u want ..it elavates the taste to some extent . Again, it depends on your taste ,but bay leaf mostly makes it more fragrant and tasty..u can also add a pinch of asafoetida at the start after u fry onion .

Garam 'masala' is basically a mixture of cardamom ,cumin seeds and other things which u are using as ready-made..some people make it at home using mixer xD.

'Masala' means mixture of things. we need to mix all those spices together so 'masala'..it is 99% used for mixture of spices xD

We generally use the quick garam masala ( a mix of multiple spices like cumin, clove, poppy seed, fenugreek, cardamom etc.) for things like curries and quick gravies. We use freshly ground whole spices for special occassions or for more elaborate preparations like Biryani where the freshness of the spice is key for the final result.
