If you've ever seen me play Starcraft, you probably know my builds can get a little weird, and that I like battlecruisers. Those two facts, when combined, have created endless and glorious games that really don't make any sense. Anything can happen, and when something does happen it's usually really stupid and funny. While many of the best replays are lost forever due to a combination of a really old mac computer and TimeTraveler dropping it multiple times, I have seen mass warp prisms shuttle probes across the map to mine from the last base and ultimately win the game, 0 supply come back against 29 (in a mirror!), and marines suiciding themselves to kill the last building with the opponent's tank fire. I have a few other games at the end of this blog.
Part of my experience with these crazy games, I think, is due to my immense passion for the game. Simply put, I don't see Starcraft entirely as a rigid yet flexible strategy game where infinitesimal details can decide the game. While it is, and there is clear evidence of the amount of information a normal-looking game can have, this doesn't tell the whole story. Starcraft is additionally anything you want it to be. For INnoVation, it's a mechanical duel, where the winner is determined by who can execute a sequence of commands better than the other. For Has, it's something completely different, and one day I hope to know exactly what it is. Personally, I find Starcraft to be a game determined by who really gets the basics behind the game and how everything interacts, and those who do understand can make anything work.
The The_Templar build isn't a build. It's a way of life.
That said, I promised a guide to playing like me...
Note: All three of these builds are Terran, since Zerg sucks at this and Protoss is already explored. Additionally, most of these games are pretty old since I've mostly played team games or watched in the midst of school.
[G] 1 Base Battlecruiser
+ Show Spoiler +
If you are lazy and don't like reading about the fine details of a The_Templar battlecruiser rush, I adapted the build order from here. However, there is so much more to a true The_Templar BC rush, and I am mechanically incapable of doing any of it.
Obviously, the first thing you need to do is scout your opponent's base on non-2p maps. I didn't, but because I was using a build of pure awesomeness, I proxied the right base anyway. However, I might note that this is actually not necessarily the best spot to proxy. While it is close to your opponent's base and probably won't be scouted, you need to have the battlecruiser with the rest of your army in order to actually kill stuff reliably. One BC by itself won't do it, even though it is the flagship of the build. However, this is probably best against Zerg since they have a bunch of overlords anyway. Against non-Zerg, I recommend somewhere closer to the center, or even at the tucked-away third base.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G1_1.png)
Here, I am using my marines to try to trick my opponent into thinking I want to expand. This isn't perfect, as he could be hiding an overlord on the highest ground.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G1_2.png)
Hellbats are not a bad idea in this build, but since it's a battlecruiser rush, I skip pretty much everything that requires gas. Sometimes I'll throw in a widow mine, or even a tank a bit later if things look dicey.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G1_3.png)
Another key feature of this build is that you move out at the exact time that allows your marines/SCVs to meet the battlecruiser right outside the opponent's base. When you do this successfully, it makes you feel like even more of a boss than you already are for battlecruiser rushing.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G1_4.png)
While attacking, you must produce several more battlecruisers, since they are the greatest units in the game and you can never have too many. I have won games because I produced more battlecruisers instead of plebeian units. Other than that, however, make anything you want. This isn't a rigid guide; do what you feel like. In this game, I just let my money climb to over 1000 resources so that I can micro my battlecruisers.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G1_5.png)
I find it amazing how many people produce roaches in response to a BC rush, but it's not too bad of an idea. Although battlecruisers are literally the greatest unit ever created, they are far weaker without a hellion (or hellbat) and marine/SCV force below them. This guy, however, is just stalling for mutalisks which won't work out well for him anyway.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G1_6.png)
While this is going on, if it looks like your opponent might counterattack, consider fortifying your wall. Base trading is okay, however; you should have yamato cannon, several battlecruisers, and floating buildings at your disposal.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G1_7.png)
I played against nine players, and all of their reactions were different. This guy ended up playing a really fun TvT against me later and we departed good friends. Yes, I beat him a second time with battlecruisers.

I do recommend getting an armory after starting your battlecruiser, though.

In my defense, this was the first BC rush of the day.

"What kind of bullshit is this"? Good question.
[G] 2 Base Battlecruiser
+ Show Spoiler +
Sometimes, your opponent is actually expecting a 1 base BC build because you are The_Templar. So why not throw them off with a BC build that can actually transition into a macro game if needed? This version of the BC rush is fueled by a two base economy, and includes tanks and stim in addition to the battlecruiser although it can really be done however you'd like. I primarily use it against Protoss that I think will take a fast third, like GumBa.
If you like pictures, the full game can be found here.
The build starts innocently enough. I open with a reaper expand build, skipping the reaper in order to get a faster factory.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G2_1.png)
With this build, you might choose to open mech. It's not too hard, just add a second factory and get a few extra tanks and hellions (and maybe some mines). I wasn't feeling particularly creative and I really wanted to win this game with battlecruisers, so I chose the safer bio. Of course, the important thing is that you get the battlecruisers. You don't proxy with this build even though proxying adds to the manliness, as you hit much later.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G2_3.png)
Photon overcharge gets annoying since I don't use medivacs in this build and I forgot SCVs, but you can often go into the natural or main in this sort of situation. However, my attack angle meant I had to back off.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G2_4.png)
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G2_5.png)
However, this build has a lot more endurance than the 1 base version. I still have a very solid 2 base income and I am reinforcing with tanks, bio, and more importantly battlecruisers. Battlecruisers are the greatest unit ever.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G2_6.png)
The intention is to kill his third. I did this, but forgot to back off so he got a slightly better deal of it. You might notice I'm saturating my third while this is all happening.

This is actually a macro build, so I did whatever I wanted and managed to win with it. My composition is fairly typical, but it could be anything as long as battlecruisers are involved.

This is how every TvP should end.
[G] 2 Base Marine Only
+ Show Spoiler +
This build is a lot more simple and doesn't involve battlecruisers, so I include just two pictures in this one.
It's extremely basic. The goal is to get way more marines than you should ever have, because a huge blob of marines killing everything without any help looks funny. To do this, I make ten barracks on two bases, with eight reactors. I have stim and combat shields, as well as usually +1/1 (although I happened to forget it this game). Additionally, I mine exactly 852 gas to get all of my upgrades and buildings. To get to this point as quickly as possible, I use a 1rax expansion and get multiple bunkers at my natural if I suspect anything.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/The_Templar/TLCMAT/2/Guide_To_Templar/G3_1.png)
After producing all of these barracks, I move out with about 40-50 marines with stim, combat shields, and normally +1/1. It's key that they all move out at the same time, and trade as well as possible. You will never get medivacs in this game, so be careful with your stims. As you're reinforcing 18 marines regularly and really often, this build has a surprising amount of punch as long as you don't mess up the first attack.
In this game, I happened to get counterattacked as I began. This actually lost me the game outright (in addition to forgetting +1/1), as I ended up splitting my initial forces. Don't EVER do this, as you simply won't be able to do anything with your incredible numbers of marines and mass marine production.
Also, split your marines and hope your opponent doesn't know how to spread creep really quickly.

"Don't do this against Scarlett."
As a bonus, I recently went through some of my old replays. Many people know how much they sucked in the past, and I too didn't really know how to play at first, so I made carriers and attacked with mass probes. Note: some of these were intended to be funday monday games.
