So I had a sleepover at my friend's house this Saturday, as part of the last weekend of spring break. We're both guys and seniors in high school and I have known him since 3rd grade. He is a great guy and he introduced me to lots of cool things and I have massive respect for his character, personality, and achievements. He was in the Honor Society as well as being a star point guard on the school basketball team. Late at night we decided to watch some porn together, just as a sort of male bonding experience. He was also a good artist and had an interest in drawing male genitalia and all his drawings were amazingly detailed. I simply regarded this as a weird quirk he had. So we were sleeping in the same bed in his bedroom. The moonlight was coming through the windows onto the bed and it lighted up his face. I told him he looked really handsome. I mean the fact is that he was fairly popular at school and had a strong reputation with the ladies. But I was also kind of joking around with him. I could feel his six pack and strong arms and shoulders wrap around my body, but didn't think much of it as he would often chokehold me from behind as a prank and I thought he was going to do it again. He asked me why such a good looking guy as me was still single. I smiled and asked him the same thing, again in a joking and sarcastic tone. He got real close to my face and looked into my eyes and said that maybe neither of us had found anyone special yet. Then he kissed me suddenly and unexpectedly. I pulled away quickly in shock. I didn't know how to react. I lied and said I had to go pee and when I came back he was asleep. I just laid in bed awake all night and left early in the morning by saying I had some stuff to take care of. Now I'm afraid to talk to him again. I mean, I've heard of best friends drifting apart after high school, and especially considering we're going to different colleges this seems a likely possibility. I'm just wondering how I could have been so wrong about him, how I misjudged him completely.

I guess its best to be straight (no pun intended) to him about it. He is clearly a really good friend, I am sure he will understand, though it may be difficult for him. This will not simply go away so I suggest you tackle it head on before it gets out of hand

Try to talk to him again about it, tell him how it was an uncomfortable experience for you and even as friends it is inappropriate to kiss you suddenly. From your reaction it was not something you were expecting nor enjoyed so resolving it would be the best measure for the both of you. Even if you have long-time friends if they aren't respecting you I feel it would be in the best interest to cut ties if he doesn't feel bad or laughs it off. I might be overreacting but your response tells me this isn't something you are too proud to talk about which means there is a problem.
