Let's assume for the moment that obvious logical flaws and holes in the story don't matter. Say there was someone who was told they need to become a competitive gamer, they don't have any personal bias towards any game and have never played any game before. Once the game they are told to play is chosen they will instantly be ask skilled as someone who played it semi hardcore and that will be their starting point.

You are contacted and told the situation and you are tasked with picking the game given the current information we have about esports as they exist today. Keep in mind you have to take things like time needed practicing, current scene, oversaturated competitive scene, amateur competitive scene etc, in mind. They don't need to be pro but the stipulation is that they will compete at an amateur level.

What game do you pick and why.

The real answer is whichever game you like because that's how it works. You get good at a game not because of dry financial interest but because the game itself occupies your every waking thought and goddamn you've got something to prove.

I think he means what game would be best to choose financially based on a variety of factors, not necessarily which game to choose realistically as it's a given no one will make it to the pros not liking the game they play; unless they are a robot which there are plenty of un-fun jobs that have a paycheck larger than pro-gaming.

Not even necessarily financially because some games are much harder to break into even though they pay more.

My "gamble" choice would be Heroes of the Storm - it's a new game so it should be easier to "catch up" to the top players due to it not being out for so long. It's like when SC2 was in beta beta (and shortly after release) when a lot of players who competed at the highest level, but weren't quite at that level once the game had been played more and the skill level had risen a lot.

Also heroes is backed by Blizzard so there are bound to be tournaments once it's been out for a while. Although it will still be a while before they happen regularly (maybe even a year or more) but you would also have the fun of seeing the game's meta develop through the early stages.

The only answer to this is some kind of FPS since there's so much carry over between them, and so much promise for the future there. (CS:GO is blowing up, COD is in-fucking-sanely huge, and we can pretty safely assume that Overwatch will be huge)

Possible 2nd choice would be Street Fighter for the same reasons.
