Day9 has a few podcasts he did back in the StarCraft 1 days that I think you might find helpful that's all basically just general game theory and can be applied to just about any RTS game. I'd recommend listening to all of them pretty much.Day9's Podcasts for anyone who seriously want to improve. Here are the transcripts of those podcasts in case you're more of a reading person. Day9 Transcripts Here's a specific podcast about how you should look at build orders that will help you out while you're playing on ladder when you're doing your typical opening build or whatever.New Look at Build Orders. Really though the largest pitfall that I see bronze leaguers falling into is the lack of logic and reasoning they have while playing. Just think "why am I making 20 cannons off of one base around the perimeter of my main base"? There's no reason to. Just think carefully about what you're doing and why you're doing it. That's about it and I hope you find success in improving.

I'm not advocating not having a build order but I got to masters without any build orders past 15~ supply and constantly getting supply blocked. It's just I spent my money and made more units than they did. Once you get to the point of where you can identify "hey I suck at not getting supply capped" or "I'm not making enough workers". What I did when I got in that spot was I spent an entire day of laddering focusing on that one aspect. I wasn't playing to win I was playing to NEVER get supply blocked the whole game. After focusing on that and memorizing the depot timings that helped me when I returned to playing normally. Obviously you could do this in practice games or vs AI if you don't want to to lose ladder games but I feel not getting supply capped while under pressure is 10x harder than when you are free to do whatever for 20 minutes vs the AI. Try and get one generic build order for each match up. Say reaper expand into hellions for TvZ. Reaper expand into 3 Rax for TvP. TvT I'd probably recommend a 1/1/1 with either a viking/raven or Banshee. You will also need to work on certain timings. I think its like if you don't see a protoss expand by 6-7 minutes its probably a Dark Shrine or Stargate. Which is why you need to keep a reaper/SCV on the map to scout these things. Also if they haven't placed a third pylon in their main it hints that they may be proxying you and saving chronos is also a hint at a rush/proxy.

Take a build order, follow it but remember that it isn't set in stone because in games things can happen, learn from your replays when to adapt when needed. Have a kill move and work towards it in each game and between games. Keep your money low and don't forget to upgrade, tie your supply timings to something, for example when I play Terran I tie them to each time I build Medivacs (Starport and Addon before that). Don't blindly move out without knowing what and where the opponent army is.

From there, I've been able to get to silver by only making SCVs and Marines, and not mining any gas (following the Staircase rules). I really don't focus into micro at all, and only direct my army by selecting my army control group, and attack-moving through the minimap into the opponent's base. Even when the composition of the opponent's army was supposed to be the hard counter (like colossi or roaches), the mere fact that I made more units made me win. I didn't play much so I'm not sure I'll be able to get into Gold with that strategy, but I am pretty confident, because I was able to win while floating several thousands of minerals. I intend to continue following the Staircase, or at least the idea behind it, which is to get a solid macro basis, and to integrate new elements (like adding upgrades, or marauders) little by little, each time you reach a milestone.

Other thing is you really want to beat the campaign if not on hard then on normal. Complete the toutorials as well. What really helps is to have someone who can execute a somewhat imba all-in against you and you try to win the game as best you can. Also 3+ hours watching strims, preferably newbier ones so you can see what higher league really means. You're gonna want to be able to make about 15-18 little boxes with your curser followed by right or left clicks as spam as well as the ctrl key spammed quite a bit. Also you're gonna need to execute one cohesive strat. So yeah hopefully i didn't offend you. haven't seen your other posts. The best stream is probably scarlett because she's really good. I'm a low gold zerg who has taken games from diamond + masters. A bit of a sniper all in ish type

if youre still in bronze league, I would aim for this in every matchup: 50 scvs by 10 minutes 5 barracks with addons, fact+starport by 13 mintues 2-2 upgrades finished no later than 15 minutes This assumes standard bio play of course, but you get the idea. Watch your own replays and make sure to notice idle time on your ccs, barracks, etc. practice hitting these in single player if you want, its a lot easier when you know that you dont have to worry about what the other player is doing.

1) Mechanics practice. I literally just have a list of macro mechanics written down in front of my computer (e.g. spending money, dropping MULEs, continuous production, minimap awareness, intelligent army movement, micro, etc.) and I just cycle through each thing and focus on a different one each day. For instance, if my focus of the day is spending money, I try to almost stare at the top right-hand corner of my screen, even if it causes me to lose my minimap awareness or micro ability; this is fine, because over time, I've been training each thing individually, so the whole slowly becomes easier. Another big thing is taking some time to open up either a macro/micro trainer or a custom game every time before you play and just spend 15-20 minutes on mechanics practice. I've probably played as many custom games against the AI trying to hit benchmarks and macro perfectly as I have played ladder games. Again, this is the most important branch of SC2 and will bring you the quickest results. 2) Replay Analysis. Just force yourself to watch every replay and ask questions and look for answers. Over time, you want to be able to form a continuous chain of "IF....THEN"s. For instance, in TvZ, IF you don't scout a natural hatch with your SCV scout, THEN you make your CC on the high ground. IF he doesn't attack soon, THEN you build a bunker on the high ground. Etc., etc. This is really about learning where your mistakes are, not only in decision making, but also allowing you to see where you fail at mechanics from time to time. Over time, if good replay watching skills come into habit, you'll get better a lot faster. 3) Game Plan. It's really important to go into the game with a game plan. Most of this portion is outside of the game and relates to how you want to approach the matchup and/or the map. For your level, this mostly just means sticking to one opening until your know absolutely everything about it (for instance, reaper expand into 10:30 medivac timing in all matchups). If you know exactly where you're going at all points in the game, it becomes a lot easier to steer your macro and decision making because you know what you want to get and what to expect from your opponent at that point in the game purely through sheer repetition and study. Analyzing replays can also help you immensely in figuring out how to tighten up your builds, optimize them, and translate them into a win. Of course, in its truest sense, a "game plan" is much much more than just a build order, but for right now, just stick to little chunks: figure out your early game until you know it perfectly, then figure out how you want to play the mid game, then figure out how you want to play the late game. As you progress through the game, the choices and decision trees become increasingly harder, so stick to the easiest part of the game for now, the early game.

In fact, it's all about macro until Master's level. Your goal should be to A.) NEVER get supply blocked and B.) ALWAYS be making workers (until you have 3 bases fully saturated). By doing this, you're guaranteed to hit 200/200 supply before the other player, and then you can pretty much just A-move across the map and crush him with 0 micro. Don't worry about strategy yet. Don't worry about unit compositions yet. Just find the most basic, simple build order for getting a fast 3rd base and just build SCV's, Depots, and MMM or Tank/Thor/Hellion or whatever fills your fridge. You might get all-inned sometimes, you might make mistakes and lose cause your macro was bad, you might play a smurf player who is much better and will make you feel hopeless... but I promise if you do those things, your winrate will increase significantly and before long you'll be putting Bronze, Silver and Gold behind you (for good, not just temporarily). I highly recommend watching FilterSC's Bronze to Master's series, and also checking out Day9's Newbie Tuesdays. Those are what got me from a once lowly silver player to a High Diamond/Low Masters in every season since. And I play Terran, so it works ![]()
