It is done!
+ Show Spoiler + Word count: 175,505 Hours spent on first draft: Somewhere along the lines of 1200 Number of times I've promised to scrap this project and do something worthwhile: Somewhere along the lines of 8000 Number of chapters scrapped because they were bad: 16 (out of 40) Number of Starcraft/Esport references: 12 Amount of excitement: Immeasurable
To be clear, I've gotten in touch with an agent whose track record includes work with two recognized fantasy authors, and he has shown some interest in my manuscript (asking for all of it), but there are no guarantees yet. He hasn't gotten back to me with a final statement yet, so he might still decide that my story isn't worth trying to find a publisher for, but I couldn't contain my excitement. Even if he ultimately turns me down, I feel like there is at least a chance that someone in the business might like my work enough to publish it.
I realize that the distance from an agent showing interest to actually being published is large, but I feel a lot more like I might some day get to be an author now than I did a month ago. To keep myself from biting my nails all day and spamming F5 in my inbox, I'm writing a series of short stories in order to have something to do in the meantime, and I'm actually more happy with the overall quality of those drafts than I am with what I sent off to the agent (though I suppose it's natural to second guess yourself when you're waiting for someone else to judge you). I might start seriously working on the sequel I've had in mind tomorrow, because what better way to relax than to bury yourself in even more stuff?
So excited.

Can you put the esports references for all to see?

That is awesome. Good luck and hopefully you get to publish your novel in the near future.

I have a 100 word essay due tomorrow, can you help me? Kappa
+ Show Spoiler +This is awesome. When do you think you can post it for us to read/see?? After publisher gets back?

Do you consider 1200 hours a large amount of time to write the first draft of a novel?
Congrats!

Cool, gratz! Let us know when you get a publisher - so we can buy it (so esports of everyone to what to read it for free)!
If you don't get a publisher first time around you could always self publish through Amazon, and if you are successful that would lend weight to a publishing proposal!
|
wow, simply amazed by it
can''t wait to see this published and see me reading this purely for the esports references
|
Congratulations, that's fantastic news! Writing a novel is ludicrously difficult; I'm of the opinion that everybody should receive a medal and a check (for pain and suffering) when they're finally done.
The best of luck!

One step closer to the dream. You're doing great Victor. Hope to see your name at B&N in the future! <3

Congrats! I look forward to the update when the agent finds a publisher and it gets published I really do hope the best for you and would totally buy that book if and when you get it published.

You have a very "writer" name, that's a good sign. Best of luck. Even if it doesn't get published (keep shopping around for agents), you should put it up digitally and let us all read it.
|
You should poke Disciple to put it in the TL store
|
First off, hats off. That's so awesome. Huge accomplishment, even if you don't get published for a while. Is Victor Lloyd a pen name? I vaguely remember you being from Sweden, or do you just live there? I have long wanted to start writing for real too, but never got my ass in gear because I want to write in English but am too insecure about it because it's only my second language. I really need to stop making excuses :/ People like you are my motivation.
|
Good luck.

congrats man, no matter where this goes, congrats .

Is there a way to self publish as an E-book or something? I thought I read about people doing that. regardless congrats,

Really cool, hope it goes through!

Very cool man! I'm in the middle of editing and revising my own story. I have someone who is willing to edit and then I need to get to your stage. Very cool to get an agent to ask for the entire thing. Congrats.

that s why he s writing fantasy, it s set in an alternate universe where all of Zealously predictions are correct and there is a magical benediction (it s like the opposite of a curse) and every player hopes to get the Zealously benediction

A lot of it is actually tied to plot-specific things that I'd prefer to not spoil, but I named an important character after Life.

I think it's somewhere in the vicinity of average for a novel of this length. I spent nearly a hundred hours brainstorming and crafting the world after I had the initial idea, and some 2-300 revising, changing and rearranging. All in all, some 7-800 went into the actual process of writing, and it felt like a lot but I don't think it's an enormously large amount of time all things considered.

It's my real name. I'm of Welsh ancestry, though my family has been "based" in Sweden for a while.
You should definitely try it! If you enjoy writing and creating your own worlds and stories, I can't think of anything more satisfying than getting to do it for yourself. The first "serious" story I wrote was terrible, both in terms of story and language. I know it's boring to hear but without trying you'll never know if you can be any good at it. I'd be happy to read it if you choose to go for it

There is. It can be done through Amazon, for example, but it's not really preferrable since much fewer people are likely to read it. If I can't find a publisher, Amazon is probably the way to go.

Let's put it this way: my predictions can't be wrong if I literally set the rules for the entire world down to the sub-atomic level. Maybe. I think. I hope.

So much congrats Zealously! I dunno if I will be able to in the U.S. but I would purchase your book if it were to be published :D
As a guy who has poured tons of time into his own novel (in progress but likely never to be finished TT) I know how hard this is. Well done

Send me some cash when you get that movie deal.

You will need to tell us what all the ESPORTS references are though

be careful in sending anything to an agent in the sense that if after sending your stuff in nothing happens keep close tabs on what he works on / gets published

Quickly now, begin the sequel without a moment to spare! Continue the flow, and marvel at how much you've improved having completed a whole novel . Even if this doesn't get the attention of some chobo working the slush pile, you'll have improved so much by the time you finish your next novel that it definitely will. And if The Hunt does get attention, it's very smart of you to already have a sequel in the works. Much stronger than the open-hinged proposition of "sequel." Consider a stand-alone (or a "stand-alone" with well worked hooks) for your next adventure! You're determined as all hell, mad props Zealously.
I call dibs on an advanced copy, keke.

Quote us one of the starcraft references!
|
Bear in mind that the Beatles where refused 20 and i say 20 times from various different record companies, before becoming a mass movement. What i mean to say is if it goes south try try and try again and don' t get discouraged cause someone "decided" your work won' tbe published. Try and try again. The stories of successfull people are the stories with the most fails in them, but what makes them different is that they tried again after the fail.
|
A little late to the party but congrats on finishing it! I don't really know anything about the novel since I am a relative newcomer, but I'm sure that it is great and somebody important out there will enjoy it! The Starcraft references also really excite me!

Update!
Agent liked my manuscript, has passed it on to a person with Orbit Books. Will likely receive a call from her in the next few days as she (the woman at Orbit) gets through the first part of the manuscript.
