I've been looking at r/triphop recently a lot. When I hear a movie soundtrack I like I try to find out more about the artists. I go to music festival regularly where there's a lot of unknown (to me, but also in general) stuff.

i have been listening a lot to online radios lately and if a song catches my attention i look it or the band up. Also threads on big forums can be nice.

Online radios play a lot of music i dont know, often because the big licenses are to expensive. Sadly it's hard to find some radios that play a lot of small subgenres. I have yet to find a good progressive rock radio.

Try looking up local bars and seeing who is playing there for the next 1-2 weeks, then checking them out on youtube. You can also find bands by taking the bandlists from major festivals like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Coachella. Sometimes through the list of 100 bands or so you might find one you like. Then you could try putting those on suggestion engines like Pandora and seeing what pops up.
