We are 6 months into production now. While we will need atleast another 6 months for a public alpha, i feel its slowly time to get a feel of what gamers really want in an arena shooter.
I frequented teamliquid alot in my days as a starcraft player, and i feel this is probably the best place to test-pitch my project. Even though i am sure i will get brutally honest comments and that some of them i would rather not hear, but we need honest feedback to grow.
Its not the most revolutionary game, game development is very time consuming, and we opted for an achievable project as our first actual game. But we still hope to make the best out of it with alot of attention to detail.
Why am i sharing this?
I am trying a different method of pitching our project, to see what the community response is. Just trying to figure out what parts of our game excites gamers the most (if it excites them at all!)
What is galactic gladiators?
My vision of the game is heavily inspired by starcraft. While galactic gladiators is an arena shooter, i still loved the competitive elements from starcraft. We want to integrate matchmaking into our game, and perhaps even leagues and MMR based ranking. Another thing i liked alot about starcraft is its sheer brutality, if your ball of marines get hit by a colosus beam, they die, simple as that.
In galactic gladiators, if your not careful and dont dodge a big projectile coming at you, you die.
We want to get that exact same feel of adrenaline and gameplay where execution and skill is essential.
What i personally do not like about many arena shooters is that it takes ages to kill someone, even if the weapons are over the top, we feel that when you get hit by a big laser beam, you should die, no excuses.
So how does the game work?
Our current prototype features one game type.
Its a 4 player deathmatch (we feel that from a competitive perspective this is ideal), the game has 3 rounds. Before every round you will enter the locker-room, In the locker-room you can equip your gladiator. You can choose one weapon that you will use the entire round (you can change before each round), you can swap out the alternate fire of your primary weapon of choice with some really crazy abilities. You may also choose an armor set, each armor set features a very distinct playstyle. One example is jump armor, which allows you to jump higher and run faster at the cost of health. After each round the game pace picks up dramatically. After each round new elements get added to create an adrenaline fueled last round where players have to give their everything to take that first spot and rise in the ranking.

At the current state we are near completion with the programming, everything is in place, its just a matter of polishing everything and finishing our game assets. Our game engine is the unreal development kit.
