Hello there TeamLiquid!
I'm going to make this short, not an extensive review and a spoiler free recommendation of this game. I finished it during the weekend with my father watching like 85% of the gameplay.
Let's strat by the 'why not' stuff, you shouldn't play this game if you like:
- Rambo action, like Call of Duty or Max Payne 3. This is not a strategy game, but it requires precaution when shooting stuff since there are 'priority' targets. - Sandbox or 'complete freedom' games. This is because the story is the main reason why you should play the game. Gameplay and mechanics are nothing that much exceptional and I feel the game developers could have done more. - Zoombies stuff... some people think that this game is about a 'zoomby apocalypse' ... yes there is an infection that destroyed the US (and probably the world) but is not like Resident Evil where the zoombies are the antagonist. The 'infected' are just there... they are a problem but you will understand that the biggest problem is actually another one (if you play the game).
Now, the reason why you should play this game:
- Mainly, storytelling. I'll say that the first quarter or maybe more of the story is not really interesting. You are like 'ok the guy is the typical rough guy and the girl is the annying stuff'. But after some events you will probably develop this kind of link with the characters. You will be worried about how things are going to end. - Good graphics. This is not really something that crucial, but the graphics are good and more importantly they are used correctly... the scenarios are really well achieved and the cinematics are even better. - If you do like conclusive endings. Maybe this is a spoiler, but I doubt... the ending will not let you wanting more, at the last scene things settle as the have to. Yes, the developers can always throw a 'The last of us 2 aftermath' or something like it, but they actually don't need to do it.
So that's the things I can think about here at work. My impression of the game are really good... since Metal Gear that I don't actually go so deep in the story... there was some points in the game in which I was so much worried about the characters that I remebered MGS3 when you have to kill The Boss... the most difficult 'press to continue' moment in video game history in my opinion (ofc, I'm a MGS fan lol).
If you have some bucks and you want to have a good time playing a nice game and watching a great story, just do it is not a bad investment. If you want to go and have a casual time, go look for something else.
Bye bye TL! <3

Thanks for reading in first place!
I don't know if I do understand you well, but if you compare this game to a MGS game it have some similarities in general terms. I hope I can make me understand, here I go:
This game basically allows you to go a 'sneaky' way or more of a 'shooter' way. Most of the times you will be mixing these situations, as you do in MGS (3 and 4 most notably). The game will try to force you to shoot in some scenes but in most of them you will be able to run, hide and start picking enemies one by one. In terms of story telling, MGS for my point of view is awesome, the plot twist, the mind fucks, the characters motivations and back stories, the excesive information that gives a serious tone and the funny moments... this game have all of it. That's the most notable similarities I can found. Now, to make other comparison in the PS3 I haven't play that much games, but the list is: Max Payne 3, Final Fantasy XVIII, Red Dead Redeption, Sonic Unleashed, God of War III, FIFA and ofc MGS Collection and MGS4 ... is a very variable list so from that list, I would say that MGS have the most things in common... mainly Story telling and this sneaky + action stuff.
I hope I made me clear...

It can be described as: Biohazard + Unchartered
Unchartered has great stories and biohazard is more than just about zombies and is about survival horror (used to be) with limited ammo etc

The problem is that I didn't find any drop of horror in this game... I was never scared, more like worried regarding the story D:
