What would you do with $15k if you had it? Would you buy an entry level car or pay off loans? Would you be reckless with your spending and put it towards a lot of hookers and blow? I have no idea what you would do with it but I can tell you what most people wouldn’t do with it. Run a tournament. But that’s what I’ve decided I wanted to do. Is it because I am insane? Maybe.

But for me running tournaments and events is something I had a lot of fun doing. This is despite the fact that they are they anti fun of the business world. They are generally not profitable, communities take them for granted and they require a certain level production or they get dismissed.

But here I am trying to make one happen and for Starcraft. A game some would claim is dead. I am not one of those people.

Its possible I should get my head examined, and yet I can’t help but be excited about the possibility if we are successful. I have been a long time lurker of /r/Starcraft and Teamliquid’s forums since the Broodwar days. Most people who play a lot of Starcraft 2 dream and desire to win a GSL or a WCS, it’s been my dream to be the one hosting one.

One many visualization pictures that sit in my digital picture frame

Ever since end of my amateur player days all I could think about how amazing the energy must of been in the Proleague finals, how it must of felt to see a crowd of 120,000 people all gather to watch Starcraft. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about roar of the crowd. Even more so the feeling of accomplishment the organizers would have felt.

So I started organizing tournaments and competitions, small ones at first, and then some larger ones and even some corporate ones. Always in the back of my mind that the energy and excitement that comes from putting together a well run event.

When WCS announced it would be adding even more community events, I saw it as an opportunity, one where I could contribute by creating a great event but also bring some of North America’s best players together in Toronto. My mind was set, I would create a WCS qualifier event.

So I spent some time in 2013 traveling to events to meet pro players and meet prominent community members so that I wasn’t a faceless forum name. I went to LAN ETS, IEM NY and WCS Toronto and met some amazing people who were excited to help me make my goal a reality. A North American focused invite tournament, complete with qualifier and preliminaries.

To help make it possible I created a Kickstarter. I did it despite how much the community has become cynical of fundraisers and they have every right to be, the land of broken promises article still fresh in most people’s minds tells of a history of people who have taken but not given.

Even as I’m writing this I am far from my funding goal but there is still work to do and feedback that I have been receiving has helped shape the event into something the community could support and something I will be proud of. But no matter what I had so much fun and I learned so much from the attempt that there is no loss regardless.

Carpe Diem

Some times tournaments can be a labour of love like small community tournaments or LANs. Sometimes I got commissioned to run a tournament (Like the LG tournament ) and I would always put what I made to run my next one or my next LAN but it was never enough to say. Bring the high level pro players, so I wanted to change that.

This should blow your mind about those gigantic Korean Starcraft: BW & SC2 WoL/HotS events; there is no entry fee to the event.
Skill is relative.

As passionate as this blog is, you only introduced yourself to the big guys you met at events. The masses still don't know you. You should really get one of the guys you met to publicly vouch for you so you can get exposure and trust, otherwise I can't envision this succeeding without relying on a small number of large donations from exceptionally giving individuals.

I read the stretch goal and I thought that itd be possible for someone of the community to do some individual player music and intros. I would volunteer but I do not have the skills required :/ No but seriously, cant someone of the community volunteer to do it if they so desire?

if this happens, when would it be?

There are tons of talented people in the community, I am positive I could find someone

There is some truth to that, I got people like Desrow and Huk to mention me on their blogs.

if this happens, when would it be?

If only we could get at least half to pledge a dollar, it would work.
