A year in Korea reflection - not casting Proleague

Previous Life in Korea blogs:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 4
Part 4
Part 4

I've been in Korea for just over a year. Many things have changed since then. Many things have changed since the past 6 months. Many things have changed over the past month.

When I came to Korea I was a naive kid that just wanted to work in esports and have a job that I loved. How foolish was I to think that there would be no catch! That such a great opportunity would not come without its trails and tribulations? That there wasn't a bigger picture surrounding me that I couldn't see until it was too late? I thought that getting past the first season would be my hardest hurdle, yet it seems to be the first of many.

I will not be casting Proleague next season. A combination of miscommunication, cultural differences, contract negotiation breakdowns, dissatisfaction between both parties, and external forces have led to this outcome.

My experiences with Starcraft 2 since the beta have had their highs and lows. This low has burned me too hard, and I am afraid it will permanently server my connection and passion for Starcraft 2. For the foreseeable future I will have little to no involvement with Starcraft 2.

I sometimes fantasize about how things would have been like if I never took the opportunity to come to Korea. Sure I would have missed out on some life lessons, meeting new people, and discovering an amazing country, but the tradeoff would have been stability and much less stress. I'm too far down the rabbit's hole to end my journey in Korea, and this feels like the only 1 of the hardships that I will face in the near future. I have a plan. Not a great plan, but one that is bent around survival in hopes that I can make something of myself in the future as far as Korea and broadcasting is concerned.

So speaking of plans, what are they? Teaching English and picking up poker are going to be big focuses of me over the next 6 months - 1 year. I am lucky enough to have many people surrounding me that can help me with both of these skills, and with the proper discipline I will do my best to master them. Another big focus of mine will be Dota 2. I will do my best to cover as many Korean tournaments as possible and try to produce Korean Dota content in the future.
ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ

Why stay in Korea though Whiplash? Why not go back home? Well Jimmy I'll tell you, I'm already in Korea, I don't feel like leaving, and its quite easy to play poker and teach English over here. Who knows, maybe I'll get the opportunity to broadcast some other games in the future and you have to be in the right place to make that work.

To those of you that were excited to see me broadcast this upcoming season of Proleague, I apologize and hope that you can still enjoy Proleague without me and will follow my journey into Dotaland. It's been real Korea, perhaps a bit too real but I'll do my best to make another blog post when another big life changing event happens to me.

Well, what can I say. I was really looking forward to you casting SPL, I think you and Wolf would be a great pairing (as evidenced by one of the Code A qualifiers you casted together) and it's too bad it didn't work out.
GL in the future (and hopefully also with SC2 after some time, cause DotA is really not my cup of tea).

Good luck, I always enjoyed your casting and thought with the right co-caster (sorry, I never quite warmed up to SNM) you could've been great.

Why not Brood War? Seriously, you've already made something of a name for yourself as an English caster, why not do it for people who might be interested in BW but not like having to listen to Kim Carrier?

So if you go into Dota2 this is not E-sports that burned you but Starcraft2. With what you listed i can't imagine this has to do with the game but maybe the people/organization that surrounds it ?

Because i can't see why Dota2 business companies players would be so different than SC2 ? (this is a honest question). Or maybe you are not talking about casting Dota2 ? And more writing about it ?

Anyway good luck with your endevour. You really improved over the PL year.

PIcking up poker might not be the best idea for you.

I dont know why SC2 players/people thinks playing poker once you retired from the scene is a good idea. Perhaps it is back in 5-8 years ago, but it certainly isnt now.

The online poker player pool is drying up just like SC2 and the ones left are fairly decent compared to years ago when you can just win if your not retarded. That said, im sure you have some friends who can advise you more on the matter on a personal level. I personally put in much more effort and time beating the lowest stakes poker, getting GM on NA was loleazy compared to that, purely on a time and effort basis.

Good luck, nonetheless.

Well, I was looking at his casting as a side-line to his poker games, not his main source of income. If he needs the streaming for income though, DotA 2 is his best bet, no question about that. Just being nearer to the players than Lysander gives him an advantage in Korean DotA already.

It's such a shame that all the sc2 casting experience you accumulated is now going to go to waste.

I think if you cast dota this experience won't be lost.

I sure am looking forward to your insight on the inner workings of Korean dota if you're as close to the scene as i think you'll be, what with actually being there and stuff :D
