It's been quite some time since I've really last played SC2 (pre-HotS more or less). I've played a few games this week when season 6 began, but I feel that the main build that I use is out of date due to my inactivity.

My primary build is 1 rax into fast expand (~3:45 plop CC down at natural), then go into 3 rax with the goal of a 10 minute timing with stim and combat shield and +1 on the way. For 'toss it's two techlabs 1 reactor for MMM, and for the other two it's marine tank medivac, 2 reactor 1 tech lab.

I'm in silver league currently. I know that build orders really don't matter too much as long as I build lots and lots of units, but I still would like to not get into the habit of a build that is potentially obsolete.

My question is basically: Is this build still a viable one? And if not, where could I go to get up to speed on what the current "good" builds are?

I think a good question to ask yourself is, ''Do I want to win, or do I want to improve?''

I think 1 Rax FE is a great build to improve you ability to play the game well mechanically. What do I mean by this? Well, while it is not a common build in the current meta by any stretch, it allows you to practice the basics of SC2 very well. If you can execute a good 1 Rax FE, you should be able to execute any build you want. It gives you solid benchmarks to hit that allow for 'targeted' improvement, which is crucial to becoming better. (50 SCVs, 100 Food, 2 Medivacs, Stim/+1/CS almost done; @10minutes.)

If you can hit those timings, you will generally walk over people just by having more stuff than they do.

Just bear in mind that losing/winning is irrelevant to improvement and you will be fine.

TL;DR - Yes, I would suggest learning 1 Rax FE until at least Platinum, and from there you should be mechanically average enough to learn more up-to-date builds that are more in line with the current meta.

speaking as someone who also recently got back into the game and dealing with the HOTS meta (in gold) just make it up as you go along

I think thats where the real understanding of your race is achieved when you can make it up as you go along and sort of improve it as you carry on playing

if you want to play that style, play it

when you lose, understand why you lost and adjust your build to encompass that

This is exactly the right way to think. Make sure to study the replays of EVERY game you lose that wasn't just "whoops he cannon rushed me and I wasn't paying attention!" Even weird games like playing against a Zerg who proxies a hatch in your main; watch that replay, look at all the areas he could sneak his drone, and try placing a non-walling depot there OR rally a marine there OR rally your 2nd-Rax-building scv to that space.

Even when you win, look at the replay. See if you could have won earlier if you had stimmed 1 marine up a ramp to check what's up. See any mistakes you personally made in your play and set out to fix them. Play a lot of games on training maps. You'll feel like time is being wasted because you're not laddering, but the fundamentals you regain will be invaluable.

Now for me to stop slacking and take my own advice!
