A puzzle 4 you instead: White to play and mate in... some moves:[image loading]

Would you be willing to spend 20-30 minutes every Sunday for 2-3 months to play chess with fellow TLers?

YES?

Tournament Thread

DISCLAIMER: This blog entry is just to determine whether there would be enough participants.

PLEASE POST SUGGESTIONS, OPINIONS ETC.

Proposed rules:

Format:
Swiss tournament, 7 rounds.

Time controls:
10 minutes per player, no increments.

Schedule:
One round per week; normally, rounds start always on Sunday, exactly at 23:00 KST (16:00 CEST, 10:00 EDT). However, people can reschedule their game to any date within given week as long as there's mutual agreement about that (use PMs for that, not this thread!).

October 28 - November 3 - sign-ups
November 4 - November 10 - 1st round
November 11 - November 17 - 2nd round
November 18 - November 24 - 3rd round
November 25 - December 1 - 4th round
December 2 - December 8 - 5th round
December 9 - December 15 - 6th round
December 16 - December 22 - 7th round

Pairings:
Announced in this thread every Monday after previous round.

1st Round - random; (to be announced on November 4).
2nd Round - 9 Round - Swiss style (to be announced...).

Website:
http://www.playok.com/ (free and instant registration, no e-mails required).

Accounts:
Obligatory "tl" tag in account name (example: tlwingpawn); no smurfs.

Games:
After each game is played, BOTH it's participants PM me with a link appearing in their stats.
(example: http://www.playok.com/en/game.phtml/227782383?ch)
All games have to be played with proper colours and time controls - otherwise, regame is obligatory.

Forefit rules:
two-way forefit when both players are absent;
one-way forefit when one player is absent + Show Spoiler [PROCEDURE] +
(the other player PMs me during the round and I try to reach the "dodger", then go to his game to confirm the score).

Rescheduling games:
Allowed, when mutual agreement is reached.
Note: It's the sole responsibility of the players to reschedule their games; please, do not ask the arbiter to do so!

Delays:
10-minute max. + Show Spoiler [PROCEDURE] +
After PMing me as in "forefit rules", the player waits for his opponent between 23:00 KST and 23:10 KST and if the opponent is still absent, the game is pronounced as a forefit towards the waiting player.

Disconnects:
60-second margin of re-connect. + Show Spoiler [PROCEDURE] +
PlayOK has default 60-second delay between a disconnect and forefit. This should be fine for the purpose of the tournament.

Cheats:
Disallowed. + Show Spoiler [PROCEDURE] +
All suspicious games and complaints will be reviewed with a strong chess engine and common sense analysis by the arbiter. Also, PlayOK has a feature of "greying out" nicknames of players, who are leaving the game window, so that should help the players.

Tiebreak rules:
1) Head-to-head game.
2) Number of wins.
3) Sonneborn-Berger score.
4) If all of above fails - joint positions.

Prizes:
None, besides e-penis enlargement.

Arbiter:
Me, wingpawn (not playing, obviously).

I'm not that good, but I like chess, so it sounds good to me. Rules are fair, and playing one day a week isn't bad either, easier to schedule for the participants as well.

I'm in. May I suggest changing the tie-brake to progressive and/or Buchholz? It tends to work better for Swiss plus it automatically works for multi-way ties, unlike head-to-head.

The reason I put head-to-head as #1 was to clearly determine two-way ties in case tied players had a decisive game. The "more wins" system as #2 should encourage more cutthroat games, since 1 win and 1 loss are better than 2 draws.

In fact there's no 100% fair tie-break system other than playing extra games by the parties involved, but I don't think it matters that much since there are no prizes whatsoever and everyone will be gaming for fun. So, you know, whatevs.

Well, I'll play whatever the tie-brake is.

I'd be into this but I don't like the rules because of no reschedule. I feel like I'd have way too many forefits with the way my schedule is.

The rules aren't carved in stone (yet). Now when I think about it, it would be more reasonable to leave the whole Sunday (or even Sunday/Saturday) as the "timing window" when 2 players can arrange their game by mutual agreement.

EDIT 2: Or perhaps the whole week, even... Anyways, I put a day and an hour when everyone is most likely to be available.

That sounds good. I'll keep my eye on it. I'm guessing since there is no prize (or anything else) involved in it people won't be jerks about setting up a time when it's convenient for both.
