Life is not a game, much less a Starcraft match, but we're individuals living in a world in which you need to improve in some aspects. In my case, for example, I find very difficult to focus and give my 100% (paying attention) at my work, I think the issue is that I don't really feel the will to spend energy in something I don't like as much as other stuff (Most of people in the world don't feel much passion about their jobs. People do it because they get paid for it, it's a simple exchange of work/money). This drives me to the conclusion of how important is self motivation in anything we want to improve about ourselves.
Why Starcraft can come into topic: basically, I think that you need a lot of self motivation to achieve a good league placement in SC2, I mean something around masters. Note that I'm not talking about skills, since .I think you can actually become good at SC2 without the need of a 'born talent'. Look at Messi for example, obviously the guy had an intense training, strict diets and a whole childhood being prepared to be a top football player. But he also had a born talent, something that cannot be acquired, no matter how much you practice.
In SC2 there are probably some cases in which some Korean Pros have a born talent, maybe size of fingers or reflexes.
But if you, common gamer, achieved Masters or Grand Masters (and u don't have 15 years playing SC or something) you probably have a good self motivation. You set yourself a goal and you achieved it. Well done.
Since SC2 is mostly a 1v1 scenario, self improvement is required. No one but you is responsible if you are a Bronze or a Masters, and no one but you will encourage you to reach Masters. No one will come to 'coach' you to do it. You can apply this way of thinking in your life for achieving your personal goals. At least that's what I think.
TL;DR : SC2 is a game that requires a lot of self motivation, this is because is a game of self improvement (not getting supply block, learning a build, scouting, etc). I assume a standart gamer that plays Starcraft for the first time and get to a high levels like Masters in a decent amount of time (months?), is a person that have a high capacity of self motivation.
