I moved recently over to eastern washington just the other day. For those who don't know, western washington is mostly forested and rains a ton while eastern washington is a shrub steppe desert.
Last night we had a massive lightning storm followed by some serious rain. .. That only means one thing to me, time to look for mushrooms! In the new town I'm in, I noticed there's parks/townhouse areas that are constantly being watered via sprinklers. Well that with the roughly 90 degree weather we have here in the desert makes for some interesting mushroom seasons and gives some year round choices to go forage for.
Off I went looking with no expectations to what I might find. The day started off wonderfully. From quite a ways away I saw my first shroom and what a sight it was. Standing ~6 inches off the ground it stood out really well. It was a cousin to the portabello mushroom you'd see in a store (Agaricus family)

With a little motivation and excitement filled in me I kept on walking only to see a beautiful orange ring on the side of a very grassy hill. A little closer and I realized I was looking at a full blown fairy ring! I'm not too sure on spelling but these are mariasmus ordeas and I've only eaten them a couple times before

My walk continued, over into a different area of town. This time it was much more flat with newly planted conifers, the occasional birch, and best of all, not a single bush to hide any mushies from my sight. As I came around a bend in the path the field in front of me was littered with more field mushrooms! These are very similar to a portabello/ white mushrooms/ crimini mushrooms, they're all in the same family of agaricus and all really yummy.

Thinking my morning couldn't get any better I was practically speed walking/jogging everywhere picking all the mushrooms I could until suddenly I saw them.. . Three very large mushrooms underneath the shade of a pine tree. Running over to nab them they were in very good shape and boy was I happy to see these. Boletes!!

Overall I had one of the better days here so far in my new home Not a bad haul for only an hour of picking eh? Happy hunting to those fellow mushroom foragers!

nice, how much do you sell them at EDM concerts for?
jk... it's awesome you can just find things and eat it, so very resourceful.

Awesome! I enjoy your shroom blogs quite a bit. I love seeing your findings.

Haha maybe its a bit weird to me but cool to see you're so passionate about mushrooms !

came for psilocybe, left hungry

Thank you for the kind comments everyone ![](/mirror/smilies/smile.gif) I'll definitely keep you guys updated as I explore the new terrain here. I'm really hoping I'll end up finding some chicken of the woods or something in the plueotous (pluetoid?) family among the orchards surrounding the area.
a176, there's lot of cow pastures with beautiful green grass. I think I might go searching for some P. semilanceata here real soon once the rain starts to really kick in ![](/mirror/smilies/puh2.gif)
On a completely different note, coho season is coming around the corner here and I cannot wait! Come September 16th I have a feeling I'll be sleeping on the riverbanks for a few days.

I'm waaay too used to TL being home to hyper-progressive drug lovers. Your titles fool me every time.

Dang I wish I knew how to forage for mushrooms
knowing me I'd probably die the minute I decide to eat one ![](/mirror/smilies/puh2.gif)
How are you planning on eating them? Just grill them?

I saute them in a little bit of butter and whatever seasonings I'm feeling (boletes will absorb just about any flavor you add) and then putting them into my omelet each morning. Any leftovers I'm probably going to slice up and dry. Once they're able to break like chips, I'm going to put most in my mortar and pestle and make some various mushroom powders to add into soups and the like.
I'm weird about the texture of mushrooms surprisingly enough. I can't really eat them if they're too meaty/soft; I enjoy them with a nice crisp outside to them almost burnt but right before the burnt flavour is there cause I mean, the flavor of each mushroom is so unique that you don't want to lose the flavour.
If you're not comfortable foraging I'd recommend buying a growing kit but then just using the spawn they give you to make a larger spawn then they give you = never ending supply off one starter kit that's meant to only fruit once

This is so weird, but in a good way
TL has the best people on it, hahaha. Keep it up, if I could subscribe to blogs I'd subscribe to yours~!

Such a refreshing blog ! I used to go mushroom hunting very often when I was a kid, but now I live in downtown Shanghai

How did you get into the hobby? I imagine there is a bit of a learning curve, and if I were to start, I would definitely want someone vetting each and everyone before I was cooking with them.

You're not eating those, are you?
