I think we've all seen something like this at least once. We invite some friends over, they catch us watching some kind of SC2 tournament and join in for a game or two. It seems like everyone is having a pretty good time, and then someone inevitably says, "So that was cool but...I had no idea what was going on."
Now I think not knowing anything is perfectly fine if the person plays the game and wants to learn more on their own. We have tons of videos out there directed at people who want to learn how to play SC2. But there's kind of a gap there, what if the person just wants to watch?
As far as I can tell, there's nothing really out there right now directed at people who only want to watch SC2. So, not being the kind of person that just waits for others to do things, I've decided to take a shot at filling that hole myself.
My goal with this project was to create a 5 to 6 episode series that could bring a person up to speed on SC2 enough that they could go watch something like Dream Hack or MLG with minimal head scratching. To serve this goal, I've made the following plan:
Video 1: Basics (Base Location Names, Starting Units, Unit Tiers, Game flow (early, mid, late, end game), Macro, Micro, and the words Standard, Cheese, and All-ins.)
(Episode 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihZ5hINOU4c)
Videos 2,3,4: Race specific videos where I talk about each unit and that race's special macro mechanic
(Episode 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUpY6BhNXWM)
(Episode 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7Ol1ckA7KA)
(Episode 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXb0hxXvdCo)
Video 5: More in-depth on game flow (supply, worker management, timing attacks, defender's advantage, concaves etc.)
(Episode 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QAUzIN6vXY)
Starting with episode 2, I've created links to games casted by big names (like Day[9] and Artosis) at the end as a way to immediately apply the knowledge learned at that point. I'll update this with the other videos as they come out.
Right now I'm putting this here because I need to know if I'm covering everything important or if you have ideas that might make the series better. If you have an idea, posting it in the comments is totally cool. As is sending me a private message here or on youtube. I'll get it either way so do what you find most comfortable.
Couple side notes: Yes, I am Omega068 on youtube and pretty much everywhere else. I picked a different name when I initially started SC2. This name here is a hold-over from then.
Also I'm aware that I'm not the scene's best speaker. If you *are* substantially better than me and would like to one-up me by making a better version of my idea...then go for it. I mean it. The easier we can make things for potential new fans the better.
