It was my first time going to Evo in Vegas, but I loved it. It was a total blast. The crowd was super engaged, and the atmosphere crackled with a level of energy that even rivaled the initial introduction of Kespa players at MLG Anaheim 2012.

I took photos for Polygon at Evo. I created a photo essay and posted all the photos I took here: Evo 2013 in Photos.

But here is a small sampling:

Are there any threads that explain the appeal of fighting games? I tried to watch Evo on Twitch.tv a little bit (for the first time) and it was really boring.

Modern LCDs do all sorts of post processing, most can't turn these features completely off. Also these features are dynamic in that the work they do to each frame might be different, resulting in a varying refresh rate. When dealing with games that can require single frame button input / reactions these sorts of post processing can really mess with a players ability to properly play.

Heres an article about what these TVs have done for rhythm games

These are some of the most amazing photos from any event I've seen. Hopefully you take more at some MLGs and other events :D!

Also, what I love most about EVO is the raw passion from it. You can see it in these pictures, as fans and players show their emotions about something they care so much about. And once you start trying to learn how to play these games, you can really start to appreciate the skill they are demonstrating.

CRTs were only used for Super Smash Bros. Melee, which is played on Gamecube/Wii and thus has no HDMI support. All other games were played on ASUS VH236H LCD TVs, since they were run on PS3s in 720p or 1080p through HDMI.

Fighting games are a mix of thought, guessing games, and execution, some emphasizing one over the others. What did you find boring in your viewing experience, out of curiosity?

You won't really be able to fully appreciate the skill and thought being displayed in each game unless you play each one enough to grasp the basics.

Saying you tried to watch Evo and thought it was boring is like saying you watched the Olympics and thought it was boring.
You could have had the misfortune of coming across a game that didn't grab your interest.

Unless you don't like fighting games in general. In which case, your question is asking for the equivalent of "why do you like Coffee? I think it tastes terrible."

The SSB:Melee tournament was real fun. Injustice looks like a terribly boring game. I couldn't spend more than 10min watching that game before I had to exit.

Well I hope you don't think I was the one bored, I thought it was an amazing event lol. I just find it personally more exciting if you know the game you're watching at least on a basic level.

First day of UMvC3, pool play, I was all "Man this sucks compared to SF4, screen's so full of useless SFX, I don't understand what's going on at all, plus the training stage has that dark background so you miss a lot of shit. Meh."
Last day for the finals I was hyped as fuck.

Between the two, I had the basic mechanics and some trivia explained to me, and through looking at the pool play I could understand the system and "picks" better—so I knew whether to get worried or hyped for a player when he only had Vergil left with or without X-Factor available.
Also the level of play significantly improved and it was visible even for a newbie like me, so if you looked at Injustice or Mortal Kombat during the pool play rather than the finals of KoF or UMvC3 woould make a huge difference.
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.

I liked the watching this years Evo especially the SSBM because i think Scar and Toph's casting is quite superb. Kind of like a laid back casting but still very informational. Something similar to a 2GD cast or BTS cast, it makes it way more enjoyable.

The whole melee tourney was soooo good. i fucking hate that james chen was commentating the top 8; why on earth was he commentating smash when he knows only the basics of the game?

Probably because he's been part of the FGC since 1995, and they wanted to end the silly segregation between the FGC and Smash community.

You know EVO 2012 is how I fell in love with EVO. I knew jack shit about each game but I watched every single game from pools to finals with the greatest joy. You want to know why? The fucking crowd man.. they make it so exciting and I learn quick so I began to understand some basics I guess. This is why I was looking forward to this years EVO.. that and Melee being in it! Can't wait for next year!

Jwong man holy shit..
