The Situation
I recently came back from Anthrocon, the largest furry convention in the world. I had been planning to attend this event ever since I booked the hotel the very first day they came on the market (March 1st). I had planned to stay with a few people - my boyfriend, his friend from Maryland, and his friend from Canada. The friend from Canada had to drop out due to financial obligations so we were left with 3 people.

May came around and a furry from the same state as me said he was looking for a room to stay in. I had met him once before and honestly he didn't give me a good first impression but he had a lot of money and I did not. As a means of reducing my rooming expenses, I invited him to come along.

He told me a few weeks later that he was intending on bringing his new girlfriend along. I told him that she would also have to incur her piece of the rooming expense pie just to make it fair among everyone that was going to be rooming. He said it sounded fair. However, the room that we booked had only 2 double beds (i.e. sleeping room for 4) so someone would have had to sleep on the floor.

The day of the convention comes around and when he arrives he's somewhat grumpy, enthused, barely even saying hi. We don't see him at all until he comes back in late and drunk, slightly buzzed, heading to bed. My friend had already assumed that he was going to be sleeping on the ground and he didn't make a big fuss over it, though I think he was just doing that to be polite and to avoid drama which I appreciate.

He snores. Not only does he snore, he snores so loudly that everyone but him couldn't sleep. I went to bed that night at 1AM and I woke up at 3AM to the sound of his constant snoring and was not able to fall back asleep for the remainder of the night. My boyfriend was laying next to me and gave me the look of "this is horrible". We got up around 4AM and took a walk to the river side and back just to talk and think about what to do.

When we arrived back at the room, we woke him up and politely told him that his snoring was keeping everyone awake and that there's no way we could possibly sleep with his obnoxious snoring. He tried a few times to position himself so he wouldn't snore, but to no avail - it would continue moments later.

At about 8AM after laying in bed for hours we decided that the rest of us should just go get some breakfast. An hour later we come back to the room and he's still sleeping, snoring away. After some talks at breakfast, I had already made up my mind. I told him that because he is ruining our convention experience (our first con nonetheless) that he needs to find rooming somewhere else. He did not even pay like everyone else did and I was the one who was footing the bill to begin with so I tasked myself with making this decision.

Overall I feel terrible because I know that I made it difficult for him, but in the long run I still stand by my decision.

-----------

So TeamLiquid, what would you do in this situation? Do you think I acted too rashly?

What would you do?

------------

TL;DR
Guy I hardly know rooms with us at a convention and snores keeping us up all night and has yet to pay us, also forcing your friend to sleep on the ground while he's in a bed. I kick him out. WWYD?

Yes because I am kicking someone out onto the streets in a place they are very unfamiliar with during a convention where they are supposed to be having fun and not looking around for a hotel (all the hotels were definitely booked)

You should definitely receive the payment before letting someone share your hotel room, since it's someone you barely know.

you should have gotten money up front from a stranger, but you are a huge unbelievable fuckface for booting someone you invited over fucking snoring. like, holy shit. id take your shit and hurl it out the fucking window as i left. what a fucking asshole. even if there were other places to stay, you invited them, and it isnt like snoring is a goddamn controllable thing

did you read the whole thing? seemed much more reasonable than that to me.

always carry army style earplugs when travelling: problem solved

but him sharing the room with you, and not telling you that he snores like a bulldozer is impolite enough to justify pretty much any action

the op being too dumb to collect money from a total stranger up front does not make him a bad person in the slightest. it's a lame excuse to make her feel better about herself. if you are worried about getting shafted, either ask for it up front, don't invite strangers. she chose the coward's option

Well, you have two options in such a situation, one would be to buy earplugs (your hotel may provide these free of charge), and turn on the AC or fan or whatever while you sleep to drown out the snoring, the other would be arranging other accommodations. It's an unfortunate situation and a real pain in the butt, that's for sure. If I were you and really needed him to leave, I would check with other hotels in the area and try to find available, reasonably priced rooming, so you can at least let him know what his options are.

Don't take Hawk's comment too seriously, the guy should have told you that he snored when arranging to room with you, it drives me NUTS to find out the moment they fall asleep (has happened to me twice with coworkers on business trips). Ideally, he should have brought the ear plugs.

Sleep with her then kick her out.

I didn't actually read the blog but I assume my above advice could apply to most roommate issues so I feel pretty confident in it.

Toughie. I must say I can't stand snoring at all (as in, I can't sleep at all and get mad as hell), but you still got yourself into this trouble (for financial reasons even durr). I'd say you screwed up, move on and next time don't make that mistake.

PS. I thought furries were people with an animal cosplay fetish?

They are. And where is this guy's girlfriend at? You said he came with his girlfriend but don't mention kicking her out. So you're letting her stay? Awkward.

I agree with Qhawk. (Obviously the next time you do this you'll ask if someone snores etc.) I would have asked him to buy everyone earplugs and/or turn on music or TV.

I feel like you are missing the point of the article. And I don't see the big problem I wouldn't sacrifice sleep and my experience at the convention so that some random dude (who already kinda pulled a dick move by unexpectedly bringing his gf along..) could just crash with me.
