I got a Gameboy color when I was around 7 years old, which would have been 1999.
My first game was Pokemon Red. I played the shit out of that game, although I never bothered trying to get all 150 pokemon or anything. Eventually I was taught the x9999 item trick that involved talking to the old man by the tree, and then flying to Cinnabar Island and surfing the coast and fighting a lvl 100+ wild pokemon. This eventually corrupted my file, and for some reason jacked up all the Pokemon League history files. It said I beat the pokemon league with things like a level 6 bulbasaur, which I did not have. That kind of junk. Over the course of years, I got Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Blue for the GBC as well.
I next got a Gameboy Advance.
Many other kids my age had things like Nintendo 64s, but my parents didn’t get me one. The Pokemon trend continued with Gold and Silver Version. Lugia was awesome. I also got the Pokemon trading card game, which was a great game in it’s own right.
You could get decks made of packs, without having to spend all your parents money on actual cards! Which I did... :D
From Pokemon, I also got into Yu-Gi-Oh!. Cards, the show (which kicked ass for the first few seasons) and again, the card game for the GBA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I received my Uncle’s old Playstation 1, which I think proceeded to transform into a Crash Bandicoot playing device.
Crash Team Racing.
Behold, the first game where I completed 100% of everything (according to the game anyways). Super fun racing game with awesome levels, items, battling and replay value.
Crash Bandicoot Warped.
Up up down down left right left right square, anyone? I’ll get to Spiro later though. This was the first game I ever played extensively, my elementary school daycare had it and (eventually) a memory card. With extra abilities (including a sick bazooka that shoots berries), crazy awesome levels, and engaging boss battles, this game kicked ass. It also had time trial mode, and obtaining gems (which I do not remember why that was important).
Spyro the Dragon
Another great game, with good levels, fun mechanics, and an all around good time.
Other honorable mentions are Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and the one game with the Snow Mobile’s. Also had the Yu-Gi-Oh game for it, but I didn’t enjoy it much. It was too complicated I think.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eventually I got my second system, which was the Nintendo Gamecube.
The great games I played on the Gamecube... damn. The highlights:
SSX Tricky.
Possibly the greatest snowboarding game of all time. Tons of fun, multiplayer, you get stats to where your characters do super awesome, individualized tricks. Can’t rep this game enough.
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.
Another fantastic game. Playing through all the levels, killing bosses. The variety of levels and realms was amazing, and the multiplayer was also kick-ass. If you haven’t grinded Dragon or Chimera with some friends, you haven’t LIVED. I used the knight as my main character, if anyone was wondering.
Animal Crossing
The amount of hours I spent on my original Animal Crossing was... a lot. Gameboy connectivity and everything. No, I did not get my golden items (or golden statue) without codes (ain’t nobody had time for dat). But I still played a ton and had a great time doing it.
Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance
The original. Holy shit guys. Best game NA. Playing through and getting kick ass weapons, leveling up abilities, fighting monsters.
There were other games of course. Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Brothers Melee (which I embarrassingly never excelled in). But those were the main ones. I think having a Gamecube as a younger kid (maybe 10 or 11?) was the bomb.

I'm relating most to the pokemon and ssx + gauntlet dark legacy experiences. Man those games were the bomb! I only played Gauntlet DL on a rental with a couple friends but it was one of the most fun games I've ever played. I love the experience of multiplayer dungeon crawling with friends, especially when you're all in the same room sharing a pizza.
I've been getting all nostalgic lately and popping in Skyrim and this little gem for an hour here and there the past month or so.
(sorry, it's an N64 game!) Tiptup was the bomb!
There were different balloon colors that give different items. So unlike MK64 where you get random from a ? block, you actually get to choose rockets, boosts, shield, etc.
Also there were courses where you flew planes, and hovercraft courses for water. Then there was also the deathmatch mode where you blow each other up in a mazelike course, and another where you fly around and grab eggs to put in your team's nest, or sit in your opponent's nest and shoot them down!

I think the monster off of cinnibar island in pokemon red (I had the same version for gameboy colour!) was either a bug in the game or a secret cheat code. I remember my friends telling me about it, how if you face that pokemon (the name was Missingno.), I think that if you either escape or kill it, it had a weird effect of giving you 99x a certain item in the third slot of your inventory. But if you capture it, then it screws up your game so they warned me not to do that!
So what you would typically use that for was duplicating rare candy (remember it levels up your pokemon), or ultimate poke balls, in order to make it easier to catch rare pokemon like those three legendary birds and then level them up. I liked to imagine Missingno. being a really cool pokemon, it was this weird rectangle shape with a piece missing and all these numbers.
That was a really fun game. About the same time I was really getting into RPGs like Fallout 1 and 2 (also by Interplay that made the famous Baldur's Gate). After playing Fallout 1, a friend came over with a CD saying "hey I brought Fallout 2. I finished playing it so you can have it now."
Those were the most exciting words I have ever heard...and after running downstairs to install it, it lived up to my expectations. I don't know how many times I've played Fallout 2 but I remember it being one of the best RPG experiences I've ever had. Since then I've been disappointed by modern RPGs, but I'm hopeful the team at InXile can make it happen again with their Kickstarter projects Wasteland 2 and their Planescape: Torment sequel (Tides of Numinera).
Also for console I loved playing Goldeneye and Supersmashbrothers. Those were the days...so many good memories.
Edit: Here's a picture of "the master" from fallout 1. That game was also a true masterpiece, and had the most amazing villain.

No offense man but how old are you? its a shame you missed the original game boy/nes/snes/n64 era. Also gauntlet legends and pokemon tcg were way underrated games.

Awesome list of games. The first games I remember playing the most as a child were on SNES, games like Super Metroid, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, MegaManX X2 X3, BattleToads & DoubleDragon, obviously Mario, and Aero the Acrobat.

I did play Starfox for the N64 of course, and the original smash bros. Just at friends' houses instead :D

There was also other random pokemon that would show up sometimes other than just missingo. I think I remember there being level 140 Golbats, that would "level up" to level 100

You might be slightly older than me, because I missed out on that era of games.

Holy shit how did I forget this... Sonic Adventure 2.
Kick ass game. So much time invested in those little Chao things.

=O?! No golden eye? No perfect dark? No wave runner? NO OCARINA OF TIME?!?!?!??!?! Tell me you at least played Melee on the cube =D?

Guantlet Dark Legacy was, hands down, the funnest game on the PS2 that I played with friends. Single Player might be TimeSplitters Future Perfect, but still. I really wish they ported it to newer generation consoles.
Also you missed out on the Nintendo 64 experience.

Also you missed out on the Nintendo 64 experience. Tell me about it. I wanted to get a ninteno when I was younger but my parents would let me. If they were trying to prevent me from playing too many video games, I have to say that they failed miserably :D
