Two giants charged at the party out of the forest. “Should we run?” asked Bregor. They were all still wounded from the previous fight. “No,” said Tudagub, “They would catch up to us too easily.”
“I think we should spread out to try and split them,” said Bregor.
“Good idea,” said Vincent. “You and Tugabutt go left. Abi, follow me.”
Abigael soothed her panicked ferret then tucked him into his pouch. She ran after Vincent. One giant lumbered toward Tudagub, the other charged at Vincent. Bregor, enraged at the sight of his mortal enemies, missed with a wild shot. Tudagub pointed a gnarled wooden rod at a giant and yelled, “Dalamar!” The heavens shook and lightning split the sky, burning the giant’s chest in a vicious flash.
Vincent attacked the other giant but had his blows parried. Abigael circled backwards to get shots with her bow, but the arrows glanced off the thick hide of her enemy. Tudagub was struck by a giant's club, and there was a sickening sound of cracking bone. Blood oozed through his shirt, but he sent another lightning blast at the creature’s face, leaving it stunned and badly burned.
Vincent was hit square by a giant's swing, like the force of a meteor. His platemail caved and he was knocked unconscious, barely hanging on to life. Abigael retreated to where Bregor was, still firing so that the giant’s attention turned to her.
Tudagub limped past the stunned giant over to where Vincent’s body was. He knelt and placed his hand upon the shattered ribcage, muttering a prayer to Jexyl. The wounds mended and Vincent’s eyes opened wide as he gasped in air. He looked up at Tudagub, who said, “Vincent, get the party out of here. I’m going to try and lure one away.” Tudagub looked back, and the giant that was stunned was now turning towards him. Tudagub said to Vincent, who was struggling to stand, “Jexyl save us, old friend.” Then he turned and pointed the rod threateningly at the giant, who flinched away in fear.
The other giant was now upon Abigael. She barely dodged a swing from it’s huge club. Bregor was still firing out of control, too enraged to hit anything. Vincent came running at the giant from behind and Abigael screamed in pain as the giant caught her left arm in one of it’s swings.
Tudagub’s rod was out of charges. He broke into a run with the giant at his back. It closed distance with its huge strides. Tudagub turned, smashing it in the knee with his iron hammer. It roared in pain, then struck him a return blow that crushed him into the ground.
Bregor struggled to control his rage, and finally, sent an arrow straight into the eye of the giant fighting Abigael. Vincent came up behind it and buried his sword to the hilt in its knee, then he swung again at its thigh, cleaving all the way to the bone. Abigael pulled out a knife with her uninjured arm and threw it into the giant’s throat. She barely had time to move out of the way as the huge body toppled forward to the earth.
The other giant saw its companion fall. It turned and started to run, but Bregor’s deadly arrows filled the air like a cloud of sparrows, peppering the it's back and legs. Vincent and Abigael hurled knives into the head and neck of the retreating giant, and soon it fell with a last agonized cry.
The party caught their breath. Abigael asked Vincent, “Where is Tudagub?” Vincent turned and broke into a run towards where the fleeing giant had fallen. He stopped dead in his tracks. Abigael and Bregor walked over to him, their stomach’s sinking.
On the ground lay Tudagub’s body. His face was swollen, and his limbs were contorted at unnatural angles. Vincent took of his helmet and dropped it into the grass. Abigael knelt down beside the body. Bregor bent to pick up a pink boot that had fallen nearby.
Abigael smoothed Tudagub’s hair back over his forehead and her tears fell. Bregor put the pink boot back on Tudgaub’s foot and his eyes too were wet. Vincent put a hand on Abigael’s shoulder and his voice was choked as he said, “We need to get off this island. Let’s bring Tugabutt’s body to the boat with us.” All three didn’t move for some time. Their heads were low, and nothing was heard but the cries of a lone sea bird.
