So I got some comments and feedback on my "strategy". From the players it was positive, Thorzain actually said he´d try it out at much higher level than I am able to compete at right now! More like.. "That sounds logical, we should try that and see if it works in practice."
From the general population, not so much. Several people are saying it´s just "fancy micro", or a risk. That you´re better off spreading and doing the normal stuff to the best of your abilities. Well, you may be right if you do that perfectly, and it´s not like we aren´t trying to do that too.
But vs Protoss who DOES the mistake of clumping his Templars, even once, this is such a cheap way to increase the odds of that attempt working. It´s been done. It´s won games. The sacrifice is really nothing compared to the potential damage dodged in storms. The move simply needs a higher success rate, because right now you seem to bleed too many medivacs/ghosts before you get your EMPs worth. At least vs very highly skilled Protosses. I think this shoud be even more effective in the lower leagues. It´s just as easy to execute as without the Marauder, he´ll get obliterated by the first beam volley and you do your thing.
Maybe it´s because I´m looking at HotS with fresh eyes, still mostly programmed for Wc3. But I feel there are certain micro situation that simply aren´t performed as flawless as they could. Not because of lack of skill, but priority or simply not having thought about it enough. That includes things like making sure your ghost lands safely when boosted in, because that´s an investment - dropping a single Marauder first to with some swift hotkey-micro (actually not that hard at all with practice) helps you land them more often. Ever since I´ve started playing vs GM players, the normal Ghost drop is just so ineffective. They either keep a close watch, or they leave templars near a group of Colossi (<-- this is the mistake we are exploiting), which is considered safe because the Colossi will one-shot any nasty Ghosts, So he might not prioritizing microing individual Templars when the pace of the game is still being set macro-wise.
I don´t even really see people trying more "fancy things" on the pro streams that much, there are of course exceptions. MC to name one. But most players focus more on solid play and learning how to win Best-ofs. It´s freackin´ fun to watch all this little extra cool stuff. Do it for the crowd!

so what's the strategy? ghost drop to emp the HTs? I think I have seen a few on some big kr tournament (not sure which one though, either SPL, GSL or GSTL, most likely GSTL or SPL)

People complain SC2 skill ceiling is too low / already been reached.
Somebody raises the bar with micro
People rage.
Also if you stop this community interaction when you go pro / get picked up by a team, i will hunt you down and kill you :3

I think I have seen a few on some big kr tournament (not sure which one though, either SPL, GSL or GSTL, most likely GSTL or SPL) It´s just an epiphany I had - a small adjustment to make it more worthwhile! An additional sacrifical Marauder to drop right before the Ghost. Since Medivacs unload faster than Colossi attack CD, he gets destroyed by the first volley and the Ghost gets to live long enough to land his EMPs more often, perhaps for it to be _absolutely_ worth vs a clump of Templars. If you are skilled enough to control your opponents attention. That´s what I´ve asked two of my old gamer friends to find out, who are good enough to force their will on their opponent "Hey, take care of this while I bitchslap all your Templars you thought were safe."
Sjow and Thorzain are gonna try it out and see how it works in high ranked GM play.
I went through a stream archive and found this situation in a TvP I played.
If you go to 8 minutes you will see how these things go more often than not when enough Colossi are nearby: http://www.twitch.tv/gglaive/b/409963414

I know that blog-read reaction, that´s someone who´s likely going to be around commenting for a while. Welcome, sir! And fear not, I would never stop! I´ve actually been blogging for years, just not one this specific, and definitely not in english. I´m practicing transfering the personality I have in my writing in swedish, that people find entertaining due to it´s duality. The light and humoristic side and the more dark and existential thoughts about life. Both my swedish and english blog will be on my website soon! Stay tuned
Edit: I have some thoughts now from SjoW now, I figure I should check first that it´s okay I quote him. I´m pretty sure he just found out I´m back :D We haven´t spoken in a while.

Glaive, could you link your bnet acc so we can follow your progress?
|
Sure! http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/4700346/1/Glaive/
My EU account is only used for custom games ATM as the TvT metagame on EU is so silly. It´s Hellbat drops 90% of the time. I´ll be posting daily updates about my progress on my blogs here and on the Facebook page.
Here´s the account I´m active on right now, one that I´ll be aiming for a GM promotion with, back to my roots on the US servers!
~6:30 Marine split warmup http://www.twitch.tv/gglaive/b/409862025
Perhaps a better representation of my current speed and accuracy, I still feel very slow, sluggish and inaccurate.

"The TVT metagame on EU is so retarded."
No,the TvT EU metagame is so ahead and that's why eu terrans are so ahead of their NA counterparts.
If you check KR streams you will see that everybody is hellbat dropping like crazy too. Try to be in touch with the game, dont ignore things that u consider to be retarded :D

Thanks! Well, you started sc2 much later then others I guess But I cheer for you to catch up quickly

I´m not arguing that it´s not the most effective way to play the game right now. In fact I agree with you and that´s the problem, because that promotes horrible Starcraft.
It took me one day to learn to Hellbat drop with great efficiency. It´s not something you need to practice. And something that is highly likely going to get patched soon enough, I feel is even more pointless to "practice" on the ladder. I wish you could have heard SelecT laughing his ass off earlier today when he "decided to do some Hellbat just to be asshole". And even more hilarious, and true, things about the current state of Hellbats in TvT. The faster we evolve beyond this sillyness the faster we can begin to truly delve into the matchup. TvT was so far ahead of every other matchup in WoL (I did follow the game, I just couldnt play it). Now it´s completely stagnant, far, far behind the other two matchups.
Hellbats in combination with Speed Boosted medivacs feels about as OP as Reapers in the WoL beta. I´ve expressed my thoughts on this matter quite extensively on my stream and on my Facebook page. Yes, it´s the height of the current meta, and it´s probably even the more "correct" way to play the game right now. But I´m not the only Terran who thinks that this is not good Starcraft (arbritrary source, more quotes from SelecT: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=414987).
But put yourself in my shoes. You´ve just switched to a game with completely new mechanics, new concepts you need to grasp and new skills to master.
You have one server where every TvT is either Hellbat dropping eachother, or me running and splitting SCVs all game desperatelly trying to stabilize. (that was actually good practice, the first few 100 TvTs that all played out almost exactly the same almost every single game) I can handle situations where I´m under pressure and could potantially take significant economic damage if I react a second too slow very well now. Time to move on and attack some of my other flaws, I simply can´t do that without wasting huge amounts of time on the EU server. It´s a damn shame is what it is.
Just microing a few units around trying to be more cost-effective than your opponent. Sounds a lot like the skillset I´ve already aquired in Wc3. What are some of of the by far biggest flaws in my play? My macro, use of positional hotkeys, transitioning into the supreme lategame. I want to work on having those perfect games of no supply blocks til 200/200. Getting a feel for how much production I can really sustain on 12+ orbitals and 6+ bases and so on and so forth. You think I get to practice any of this on the EU server? No, it´s pulling SCVs and dropping Hellbats all day every day.
In my current shape my overall skill benefits more from practicing on the NA server as more games, by quite a large margin actually, go into the midgame.
Whether or not the metagame on NA is behind, or people are more like me and feel fucking dirty when they execute Hellbat drops/allins. I love the unit mixed into compositions. But what Blizzard need to do in my opinion is add a short delay before they can fire when dropped out of a Medivac.
If Blizzard decides it´s fine the way it is, that it, in fact, does promote great Starcraft 2 matches, and TvT still can´t evolve beyond Hellbat-dropping... I´ll switching to Protoss, I think I could get a reputation of someone with pretty sick Blink-Stalker micro (it´s similar in ways to the pattern recognition and swift micro required in Night Elf vs Night Elf when both players open 2 Aow Hunts). I think me and SaSe were the best in the world at those engagements. Granted, most elf players opted to open Archers into tech transitions, so we were the ones practicing it the most.

This post from my "Hi guys, I´m back!"-thread especially I thought was hilarious, someone called me that after nailing three 4-point surrounds vs Grubby in the Blizzard S4 EU finals. This community is pretty awesome, thought for sure I´d be a complete no-name. As in eSport you are forgotten very quickly, I haven´t competed internationally in many years and was never involved in the BW pro scene - why would any Liquidian know me? Well, apparently you guys are more hardcore fans of eSports in general than I gave you credit for. I´m just very excited that at least have bit of a name and reputation to build on! But don´t you worry, I´ll be working my way up from the bottom, churning out updates about my progress and various content as I go along. Basically I want to try really record the entire journey, showing the world exactly what it takes to get to the point where I´ve reached my full potential. At which point I´m certain I can at least make a living off of being a progamer - albeit not a fantastic one unless I get lucky and pick up a huge following along the way. Interested perhaps more in what I have to say and how I saw it - than my skill-level and raw talent.
It should be an extremely fun ride that I in the long term, plan to turn into a documentary about my progress from Day #1 to .. you know, Day #493 of Grandmaster the Ladder. A compilation of select vlogs and outtakes from my earlier stream sessions (all of which will be at least uploaded in ~1 hour highlights - so you can easily follow my skill-progression. And as I´ve already been offered LAN-spons I will be showing up at tournaments, even if I get stomped. To do coverage and continue trying to beat these scary skilled bastards in a real series! Think how many companies should want to pay for their logo on my T-shirt, I´m 203 cm, I´m not sure exactly what that is in ft, I think 6´7. People always staring at the giant, it was either this or basket ball and I´ve already blown out one knee.
Rants away...
The plan was always to start episode #1 with the launch of the website. But I´m kinda regretting not starting it sooner because it´s almost silly how much better I´ve gotten just in the past few weeks. I have a few very loyal IRL friends and fans who have been watching me stream every night. Ever since I was finally able to afford my new comp that can run and stream Starcraft 2, ultimately making this venture/documentary possible. They were the ones who convinced me to put up the temporary stream beforehand, so that they could watch me climb from Gold League to High Masters to eventually even facing Grandmasters on EU. I´m glad they did because it has enabled me to analyze my own stream and keep track of habits, numbers and statistics about what mistakes I make, when and what exactly was distracting me.
The past few weeks I´ve been recovering from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleurisy so I haven´t quite been able to make that 40 game a day quota that I had when I started. But I´ve at least recored enough games to have plenty of games to analyze, full of mistakes to reflect over and lessons to learn from.
Jeez. I think I need to get some sleep. I´ve been laddering for 12 hours and then writing content for the website for another 12, and posting here of course. Entering that overtired-phase where your brain can´t wind down. I´m gonna go for a jog and clear my head a bit.
Without really being sure if I was going anywhere with this, or if I should have written this in Notepad instead, I´m at least happy with how the launch of this blog has gone. I mean, to be honest I wasn´t sure when I would get a comment. I wasn´t sure it would be worth the extra time spent creating at least some variety in content between this blog, the one on my Facebook page and my twitter. It´s going to be so incredibly nice to have the website up, a place where I can gather and present all the content I´ll be churning out in my own way.
But quite frankly I think I may have too much for interacting with you guys to simply refer you to my site. With how fast this has turned into a place where I really feel that I can share my thoughts about the game and my career without judgement... I might just have to run 3 blogs simultaneously :D
Very excited to start getting to know all of you, answering any questions you might have. Interacting with my followers - just reading little comments here and there seeing people wish me luck with my commitment to my dream... It does so incrediby motivated that I will have no chance to succeed without it. And my manager/web designer providing me with the equipment (like HD webcam) out of his own pockets. This all in combination with how much FUN I´ve been having just struggling to catch up with everyone who has a ton of WoL experience behind them. Still being able to get to high master just purely off of my micro, and now feeling that all these hours I´m putting in are starting to really pay off. I´m noticing I have more and more units when I go back to base after microing for a while with each day. More units that I can do what I do best with, win fights that I probably shouldn´t.
I´m just gonna hit "Post" for now and go over all of the above tomorrow, see what stays in this comment, what gets deleted or becomes a seperate blog post.
Did you get all the way through this post? You´re a fucking champ! ;D I apologize if I was too tired to be my usual coherent self but I hope you thought it was worth the read. I guess I won´t find out until I get some sleep. If you´ve made it this far, and you like the idea what I´m trying to accomplish. I ask only that you help spread the word of my return, and my "cause".
POST.

Dude you posted 5 blogs today?? Try to not oversaturate the blog section, space out your ideas, make more complete blogs - some of the ones you have are like 1-2 paragraphs tops. You also shouldn't be spreading your attention over so many topics imo.

Guy can post whatever he likes whenever he likes, thats the beauty of the blogs section, its just airing your thoughts.
If he wants to post 100 blogs in a day, as long as it has content, i dont see an issue.
If people dont read them, thats not really an issue unless he deems it to be. Sometimes a blog isnt about getting people to read it.

Just wanted to comment...hellbat TvT is making the collective IQ of Terran players and spectators everywhere go way down. Hope it's patched soon, because when the game is "whoever hellbat drops your workers fastest" it becomes quite stupid.
And more on topic...why do you keep making these lol

No, I posted 5 entries in one blog to kickstart it a little bit for those who are actually interested in listening to my story and following my progress. Complaining about "too many" blog posts? I´ve never heard of such a thing. This from a guy who has just openly announced that he has an illness preventing him from holding down a job or continuing studies at university at this time. Did you expect any less from someone who´s vowed to spend all of his waking time to playing Starcraft 2 and producing community content? If so, I should tell you right now mate, I´m just getting warmed up
When I decided it was time to come out of the shadows, tell my story and re-introduce myself to the amazing eSports community people right away (based on reading what kind of content I wanted to provide) suggested I should start a blog for the kind of daily, smaller but more frequent updates. It´ll be ladder statistic I´ve been keeping track of, lessons learned the hard way during the day. And of coure the recurring theme/long list of "Flaws in my play" that will be addressed on a daily basis.

I wanted a place where I can write down my thoughts about the game and my career. At whatever quality and quantity I have the time/energy for. Is there anything wrong, against this websites guidlines, with theposts I´ve written so far or what´s your issue here? Have they not been lengthy, but a worthwhile, perhaps even interesting read?
"Cluttered..." I´ve written 5 blog posts in roughly 24 hours and none of them are visible on the front page. I really don´t see the problem here.
Also keep in mind that the blog was started today, visiting a new blog with only one entry might not look all that appealing. What makes you think I´m not spreading out my ideas? I´ve been writing content for my website/blog for weeks and months - years even - the "Starcraft - Ladder". "Starcraft - Random thoughts", "Strategic insights" and "eSports content and blog stuff"-folders on my Desktop dates back over two years - that´s when I birthed this vision. But I had no means of chasing the dream without money, computer or equipment. So I began writing and planning. This blog could easily have over 50 posts already if I began copy pasting.
I blog a certain way in swedish, I have never blogged in english so I´m still trying learn to translate my more funny/ironic/slightly darker and less "formal/professional" voice that right now just sound kinda sounds like a forum troll when I try to capture and translate the core of that personality to english. I´m writing this much right now because I need the practice. If you read any of the 5 posts it should be pretty abundanly clear that I´m dedicating my time, my life even, to eSports. In order to provide you with quality entertainment and educational content I need to practice writing. I write for my own sake, it´s therapeutic, how I´ve always coped with tough times in life. Should I also happen to gather a couple of followers who are genuinely interested in watching my journey or just enjoy my writing - likely the most detailed and well-recorder amateur-effort to date.
I´ll be announcing soon why frequent updates, vlogging and plenty of decent length journal entries are required. But trust me, if you´re a fan of eSports, you´ll think it´s for a good cause.
If you have a problem with the amount of content I put up, simply read one or two posts and save the rest for later? When I was an active blogger in swedish it could look roughly the same. 5 posts in a day and then nothing at all for some time. I can´t write quality content on command and I can´t change the way my brain works. I was never really great at the "One post a day"-thing that some people seem to stick with. That´s fine. But please let me do my own thing at a pace of my choosing.
This is a blog written by someone who is spending 10-12 hours a day practicing, watching and learning about Starcraft 2. I have many plans for the future that require detailed chronicling of my progress. There will be times with few updates and there will times with several posts per day.
When I practice, I practice hard. When I get in the zone, I write a lot at once.
Take it or leave it.
Edit:
I do however, regret that it´s just a bunch of giant walls of text at the moment. I mean, I really like writing these longer and more personal blog posts, too.
But ideally supposed to be mixed in with audio and video content as well. I´m broke. My headset ironically is also broke. I´m waiting for webcam and new microphone from sponsor so I can start practicing creating the other various forms of content I have planned for you guys.
However, I don´t have any particular vision for this blog, I am too busy with my practice regime and work on the website. This is just an outlet, where my mind can run free and I can blog about life and Starcraft without mental blocks - as long as the content is appropriate. Are you arguing it´s not?
I might just randomly write stuff here instead of in .txt-files on my desktop. You´ll just have to avoid clicking on this blog if that´s going to be a problem for you. Due to the awesome featuers of this site, and the incredibly supportive community it´s resting on, I could possibly post "drafts" here and get feedback on the content before I upload it "officially" on my own Website/Faceboook/Twitter/Youtube-channel.

Regarding the strategy itself, it reminds me of the old days of BW reaver / ht drops where people would drop a dragoon or a couple zealots before the reaver/ht. Also against tanks, you can wait for the volley then instantly drop the ht, storm, and pick up, all before the second volley, so your ht will never be hit by the tanks.
|
No word from Thorzain since he said he´d try it but SjoW came back with a comment:
(Loose translation) "Yeah, plays like that will probably own, but are difficult to execute. It´s likely to becoming the norm as the skill-gap increases, good idea to start practicing already.."

Don't spam the blog section, wait a day and then post again, we don't need another StateofReverie lol. Also, I like the innovation, you should keep it up, don't let anyone raging at you get you down. If Thorzain tells you he'll try it out, it's worth a shot any day .

I just recorded an impromptu version of the "proof" that is required for this to be posted in the strategy forum, mostly because I wanted to try recording something with my upgraded stream. It´s just me sort of explaining what I´m doing with zero rehearsal. But since I´m getting my HD webcam from my sponsor on Monday (at the latest) I´m going to hold off and post it after I´ve recorded a better, more thorough and professional version of the proof then. That will also include examples from live ladder ladder games.
I did realize that in my second recording of this video I forgot to explain that (and several other things I had made mental notes of for the video beforehand) the difference between 3 and 4 Colossus in the composition is that while 3 will One-Shot a Ghost, however, they won´t one-shot a Marauder. So they actually have to fire twice (2.30 in game seconds) JUST to kill the Marauder. So you´ll have even more time if they only have 3 Colossi in range of your Medivac.
In the situation with 4-5 Colossus the Marauder is instantly vaporized by the Colossus and you "only" have the 1.65*2 in game-seconds to unload the Ghost get the EMP off as the Marauder is guaranteed to die from the first volley. But even in that instance, without using any unit hotkeys, I´m able to demonstrate that it´s pretty darn easy to get the EMP off, unless I misclick something awful.
But for anyone who actually came back to check my blog and wants to see the effects of this right now, here you go: http://www.twitch.tv/gglaive/c/2363755 15 second silence in the start of the video.
I only ask that you don´t share it until I upload the proper version with much higher content-quality on Monday. After putting this much time and energy into it, I wanna do it as "right" as I possibly can to make this a worthwhile contribution to the Strategy forums. I´ve been having such huge success with this on my High Masters account that I´m pretty darn excited to be honest.
