This blog is a simple blog, about my current situation/thoughts/opinions.

Basically what it comes down to is: I need more nerd friends.

In all throughout my grade school-high school life I was what I would consider a "closet nerd."

By Closet Nerd I mean someone, who deep down is a giant fucking nerd, but as soon as he leaves the house, he leaves his nerdiness at home. The closet Nerd also sort of leads a mini-double-life. I mean By the time I graduated High school I was spending 20+ hours a week in WoW, and other Computer games.

I read all of the LotR/Harry Potter books.

But as soon as I left my house, I was a moderately cool, popular preppy kid at my jr high/high school.

(Im 24 now.. so Jr high was 12 years ago.... holy shit that made my stomach turn realizing that was half of my life ago when i was in Jr high =(...)

But back then, being a nerd was very much frowned upon and still a negative stereotype.

-Now-a-days Nerds are the new cool, thanks to hipsters are super-hero movies. Media has somehow managed to make Nerd the new-cool... but thats for a later blog... back to my history.-

I played high school sports, started on the varsity football team, had a smokin hot girlfriend, was super popular, got Homecoming court, and everything, but as soon as I got home I could be the GIANT nerd that I wanted to be, who raided Hardcore in WoW, spent 15+ hours a week in a 40 man Raids, or was grinding out Arena points.

Anyways, throughout my teenage life, I refused to be acknowledged or known as a giant nerd...because nobody wants to make out with the Nerdy kids. Nobody votes for the Nerdy kids to be homecoming prince etc.

In high school, most of my friends were other jocks/preppies along with 2 other friends who I would identify as fellow "Closet Nerds" It was very much a... at school the rule was 0 discussion of WoW, LotR, Star Wars ETC.... 0 nerd talk allowed...people were around.

But when we got home we were all members of the same guild and raided together and never slept cause we stayed up all night Raiding.

As soon as I graduated high school, I quickly lost interest in hanging out with my "cool" friends because I just really didnt have anything in common or any reason to hang out with them because outside of school our interests were different. Also at the time I had a serious girlfriend who i had been with for 3 years in high school, so all of my friends sort of fell away and I didnt mind that at all to be honest.

I stayed in contact with my 2 nerd friends, simply because we had all the same interests, and still played games together, and WoW is a great way to keep a friendship alive with RL friends who also play, because u still contact eachother daily and hang out on skype etc....

Anyways, fast forward a couple years, My girl and I broke up. One of my friends moved to Texas, and is working as a Border Patrol agent, the other is in love with his now Fiance' , his first ever girlfriend who he is now marrying. Basically all he does is hang out with her, and her friends cause she is pretty demanding, and she has endless free time = all of his goes to her. Which is fine and understandable, i was pretty similar when I had my serious relationship.

Anyways, now neither of them really play games, my friend who was interested in Esports just simply no longer has any interest because of his girlfriend and lack of free-time. All 3 of us stay in contact and anticipate another game that we can all play together and enjoy. (we are all sick of the new WoW, we grew tired of GW2 after week 2 and having max level/best gear and realizing there was no end-game/grouping....currently waiting for ESO)

But I am discovering, as I grow older, and have more freetime now that I am single... my interests grow Nerdier and Nerdier. I think its just because of my lack of concern/care about "cool" or worrying what any1 thinks cause I havent really given a shit about any1's opinion since high school.

But I have recently begun spending a lot fo my time playing Magic The Gathering online, and following DnD Podcasts, as well as writing my own Pen n Paper System/campaign which I plan to host for other TL'ers in the future.

But like... 5 years ago.. i would have NEVER touched Magic or DnD (ESPECIALLY DnD...holy shit this was like...the nerdiest shit ever to me before I began watching Rollplay -which i initially watched because i thought it would be cringe-worthy and awkward...but i actually enjoyed it and have played a 1-shot that i actually REALLY enjoyed-)

BASICALLY... holy shit this is longwinded....

My current problem = my friends with similar interests are spread across the country, or completely Without free time.... and I find myself wanting more "nerd friends" who are interested in super nerdy shit like Magic and DnD, or interested in Going to S Korea to watch a Finals In Korea (I now work fulltime and make good money, and want to go see a Code S Finals...but my only RL friend who watches Esports does not have the money to do so... but i dont really want to go by myself -.-)

But the problem with these hobbies... is that people who are into these things are usually similarly minded as I am in that...they would rather hang out at home and play video games rather than go trashed at a club...

Where do nerds meet other nerds and find other nerd friends?

TLDR:
Due to my refusal to acknowledge my nerd-life when I was younger.. i find myself desiring more Nerdy friends.

Sucks that your friend is so pussy whipped. Just don't let it happen to you man. I know of some people that suffer from the boobs of their own volition and it just sucks to behold.

What sort of Meyer Briggs type are you? I'd be interested in knowing. You seem to care quite a bit about labels and what other people think of you. The way I was taught growing up was that caring so much about external acceptance is looked down upon. Hopefully you've grown passed all that stuff and finally just want to be and do what makes you happy.

Where do you live? I live near Seattle in there are tons and tons of these people. You can start to meet some on forums and online communities. There are also lots of local events and tournaments, get togethers and such around where I live. I don't attend them because I have no time since I'm attending school atm, but they all look pretty fun.

Anyway interesting blog thanks for putting it up.

6+ years ago, when I was in High school, i cared what people thought about me. As soon as I graduated high school I genuinely lost all interest in other peoples' opinions.

My point is that now that I am older and dont give a shit what any1 thinks... I lack friends who are as Nerdy/noncaring as I am about it lol.

Also I dont hold it against my friend... he literally was 22 years old when he got his first kiss/makeout session/boob etc... so I get it.. when I was first introduced to the wonderful world of Breasts... i couldnt be bothered by my guy friends to do anything.

I get it.

"So.... I can get a blowjob and hangout with my naked girlfriend... or i can go get drunk at ur house with a bunch of dudes?"
i get it. (tho my friend is SUPER religious and part of the reason he is rushing to his marriage is so he can bang his girlfriend guilt-free - he works at a church... we dont agree on religion but were still friends :D )

I'd suggest trying to find some local gathering you can just show up to. This way you can attend something that lasts longer with people that are near you that you can possibly meet and hang out with.

Edit: Also, what's your Meyer Briggs type?

Only if there are close to 0.

Does this sound close to you? http://www.personalitypage.com/INTJ.html If you're actually INTJ your blog would make a fair bit of sense to me. I think most people on TL are INT or ENT types.

So yeah dude go make some friends that have similar interests and have fun!

my J was an 11% but ya the pretty accurately describes me in a nutshell..
Also my name is Trevor IRL

idk why but generally people named Trevor are very similar in their likes/tastes from my experience...

playing DayZ back when it was new... there were 6 people named Trevor (before people realized how to change their name... like me)

Just saying, people named Trevor tend to love gaming.

Don't label yourself, or your friends for that matter.
You don't have to be a "nerd" or "a cool guy", just find out what you like and do it with ppl that share similar interests
No need to avoid female contact and sports to play WoW or watch sci fi ocasionally imo

Sorry for the off-topic, but I just did the Typology Test and checked out the personality page for my type (INTP) and holy shit is it accurate. Even the small details are somehow spot on, the only part that I disagreed with on the personality page was not being in tune with how other people are feeling, but this could be due to development of sensing and feeling earlier on in life in an attempt to understand other people.

Thanks for the links, they were a very interesting read.

meh does it hurt feelings if i call someone who is nerdy... a nerd?

IDK i like to think of it more as categorizing my friends lol.

I have my friends who i play sports with. I have my friends I go shooting with. I have my gaming friends.

idk lol

def when i was younger I was interested in "cool" but EVERYone cared about it back then.

but like I said.. as soon as I graduated (and even before) i realized "cool" was a joke and stupid, and am much happier being much nerdier now =D

I think I know what you mean. I took up gaming 1,5 year ago to find a way of stress relief from my super serious job. I realized that I should never had quit and that I am way more 'nerdy' than I tried to appear for years. I actually have lots of friends and activities outside of gaming, but I just miss talking to some friends about videogames

Game shops and lans and whatnot are a good place to meet nerd friends. It can be tough though since the full range of personalities congregate over a shared appreciation for the same esoteric activities. You have to do a lot of weeding...

You can try going to barcrafts, join groups and forum meetups etc to fulfill your nerd friend needs but doesnt it contradict teh concept of friendship?

I mean really? Is it really a problem if your friend is not a nerd or a nerd? Yes you can choose who your friends would be but if you really want to have good friends you don't judge them,. You just take what they have to offer and see if they good people then you become friends with them. Yes it is better you have the same interest but not necessary. You can also have some friends for "A" and some "B" friends you can go with. Say A is gaming, B is for sports.

I had the same scenario once but came college I just said to myself, fuck them if I like video games, magic cards and play a member of the varsity team. It makes you well rounded. Makes you understand people better. If they are really my good friends they would judge me for that so what if I am a nerd? I am getting laid, I have a social life and I am happy. This turned out to be a good thing having 2 different lives. It sorted the true friends and the not.

Just make friends, it does not need to be labeled. You can try influencing you non nerd friends to be interested with your interest but you cant force them.

These nerd friends...

One a border patrol something and one a church worker who feels guilty about living in sin?

You've been hanging out with the wrong kind of nerds. At least half of what's so great about nerds is how well they age.

"And the Nerd shall inherit the Earth"

You're supposed to be the lawyers, doctors, bankers and engineers now, the ones with the fun jobs who meet like minded individuals through work/college.

again not saying i dont have friends who arent nerd friends. I have 2 of my best friends are playing in the NFL this season for the Packers, and the Vikings, with another friend getting a full ride Scholarship to ASU in the fall to play football/baseball.

Not saying i shy away from non-nerd friends.

however this blog is about my lack of nerdy friends.

Personally, living in a very technologically and cultural backward country in terms of anything that is art related, I have had and will have this problem all my life. The closest you will get to a group of "gamers" here is a bunch of people that enjoy LOL on a daily basis tho they are very bad at it, unless you are bout 30-50 years old ( aka from the times where IC were a thing ).

I will simply "split" my nerdy hobbies by categories and talk about them to different people.
So although I can't find someone that I can talk to about all the "nerdy" things I like ( which is a really retarded classification I might add ): Starcraft, Diablo, WOW, RPG's,pen and papper, card games, SF books, fantasy books...etc. I will find people that like 1 or 2 of them and talk to different people about different things.
A good strategy means leaving your opponent room to make mistakes

well it is just sad because most of the good nerdy friends can be found in schools 1st in my opinion as they really cant avoid physical contact in school ( Again my observation as nerds tend to be shy and avoid physical contact unless they are totally comfortable with you or know/trust you already) I am assuming most of us nerds are shy and would prefer being online than going to parties.

However as I said, barcraft, forums, groups. Maybe try some local communities say local starcraft communities and stuff. Probably conventions but we nerds tend to be excited with the event and would not really be looking for friends. Start online and start with vents. Maybe the group could organize meetups and there you go.

also i get the impression that the op has been out of school for a bit
