Hey guys,

I'm looking for music for specific purposes, here's what I need and what I usually listen to:

"All-round" music

My daily life revolves around alternative rock playing in my ears.

Some of my current favourites are Bloc Party, The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Billie Talent, The Strokes...

Studying / learning music theory

Usually I listen to solo piano, classical stuff or some more modern ones.
My favourite pianist is Chilly Gonzales.

Working Out

Harder rock all the way. From Metallica to Maiden, from Kiss to Katatonia, from ACDC to Amon Amarth...

Inspiration for Fingerstyle Guitar

If you know any great fs-guitarists I don't know, you win at life and have my undying affection.

Being high (on life!, like in nature or something!)

I love the Peppers in sunny weather, Alexi Murdoch when I'm in the mood for travelling John Coulton when I need a laugh. Some more mellow rock tunes would be awesome.

Being Low

Throw some Trip Hop my way, would'ya?
Mostly Portishead, Massive Attack, the big ones.
Also ambient, like Emancipator, Berry Weight and the likes.
Oh, and Antimatter, but that's a bird of a different feather.

Cheers guys, this site is awesome and I'm confident you have some brilliant ideas!

♥

Fingerstyle guitarists: Andy McKee, Antoine Dufour, Ewan Dobson, and Stefano Barone. Actually, any of the CandyRat records guys are really good.

Fucking Candyrat, right? How are they all so amazing, especially Andy McKee and Steffen Schackinger.

I really really like Buckethead. He's an amazing guitarist. I think you'd like his acoustic albums (Electric Tears & Electric Sea)
Especially listen to the songs Sketches of Spain and Spell of the gypsies
As for alternative rock, I really like Alternosfera, but most of their songs are in romanian and the others in russian, so I'm not sure how much you'll like them

I'll get back to you on recommendations, but holy fuck, isn't Chilly Gonzales bad ass? He's easily one of my favorite artists.

Opeth man. Fucking Opeth.

Also check out Animals as Leaders, Scale the Summit, and Russian Circles. For something a little more mellow, check out Maserati. All of those bands are my high (Tool is the best for being high on life (or other things) band IMO), low, workout and inspiration to play bands. Not much finger style, but still.

Yeah, he's absolutely pristine. I learned playing the Piano because I was so blown away by "Dot"...

Ulli Boegershausen and Sungha Jung are worth mentioning too in my opinion.

Indie/Alt-Rock:
The Films, Metric, Lodger, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Subways, The Used, The Sonics, Television, Millencolin, The Fratellis, Modest Mouse, The Hives

Hard-Rock/Metal/Punk/Whatever:
Halestorm, Black Sabbath, Pennywise, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed

A couple of years ago I would have had better suggestions I think :/ But I don't listen to a lot of music like that lately, sometimes a little SoAD or Queens of the Stone Age, but mostly Tool which is kind of a different direction.

What RHCP stuff do you like? The BSSM album is the best thing ever in my opinion, many people only really know their newer stuff though. So if you don't know the Blood Sugar Sex Magik or Mother's Milk album give it a try.

random stuff:
John Frusciante (my all time favourite musician), Walk Off the Earth, Absofacto, Glitch Mob, Obedear, The Dead Brothers, Electric Six, Ataxia

Ulli and Sungha are great, I play lots of their stuff every day, though some of the newer covers by Sungha are absolutey mental in regard to difficulty.

The harder stuff you mentioned I know pretty well already, particularly Disturbed.
BSSM is great but I also love Stadium Arcadium. John Frusciante is one of my favourite musicians as well, I love the guy.
I will check out your Alternative and Indie suggestions and I should definitely be paying more attention to Tool.

If you like the Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes you owe it to yourself to listen to The Kooks. Just go on youtube, find the full album Inside In Inside Out and listen through it. It's incredible

You seem bereft of classics. Brian May's work on a guitar is quite astounding, although Freddie Mercury's voice goes with it well.

Also, Rush. They have a song that will fit most anything you can think of, and then four more and at least one that is half an hour long that may also apply.

A strange twist on songs for feeling good - "Kom, Susser Tod" always makes me upbeat, despite the actual subject matter, as does "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life".

Halestorm, as previously mentioned, is awesome. For a change up in your diet of metal, try some Apocalyptica (cello metal, it works, and they can work those things like the metal is in their strings) - granted, they were mostly a Metallica cover band for years.

If your answer to nanaoei above is "sometimes" or more frequently, any music that was ever connected to Cowboy Bebop. Aka, The Seatbelts.

With regards to older orchestral and chamber pieces, there is a wealth of options yet I feel one cannot go wrong with some of the Ludwig Van, although I'm partial to Holst.

And for absolutely no reason, Toy-Box.

Now that I have destroyed any possible credibility, it is time to move on to something really exciting. Like TMBG.
Yes, I email sponsors... to thank them. Don't post drunk, kids. My king, what has become of you?

I just found a great instrumental album in the most unlikeliest of places:

There's an orchestral-only version of "Dark Passion Play", by Nightwish (lol), that is really fucking fantastic.

Now all I'm lacking is more solo piano music.

Stuff I've been listening to lately:

Electronic:

Pretty cool UK group called Cicada, kind of psychedelic prog-trance
+ Show Spoiler +

New Pet Shop Boys Single -- interesting blend of old school hi-NRG with modern house/trance. New album coming in July
+ Show Spoiler +

Rock/indie

The 90s band Jellyfish has a couple of really great albums if you're into 70s power pop/rock. Their guitarist Jason Falkner also has some nice solo albums as well.

Pretty cool Brian Jonestown Massacre-ish vibes from the new Mikal Cronin album

+ Show Spoiler +

Superdrag is mostly known for their '96 MTV hit "sucked out" but IMO their real treasures are their lo-fi/ power-pop songs from Head Trip in Every Key and their early work/b-sides. Just give these a listen, I promise I'm not trying to be a pretentious hipster.

I've been listening to a lot of 2.0 by Garbage a lot lately, definitely worth checking out if you like this one
+ Show Spoiler +

And I'll finish things up by linking you a Korean indie/electronic group called Glen Check. Some serious New Order vibes coming from these dudes
