Coffee is good for you everyone says, and research apparently shows it but from my own personal experience, it simply isn't the case. Who cares what studies show if your own personal experience is different? I've had coffee since I was maybe 15 or 16 years old. During that time I have enjoyed many cups. I have also found the crash that a person experiences after drinking coffee sucks. There are times when I will drink a cup of coffee and it won't have any effect on how tired I feel. There is no crash because there was never any high from it. There were times where I had to drink many cups of coffee just to stay up, and staying up felt horrible. There were times where I couldn't sleep because I drank coffee that afternoon and then went to work early in the morning feeling bad. I have also drank coffee and felt more tired after drinking it then before, I can't explain it but this has actually happened to me.
The reality is coffee does not replace sleep. I have stopped drinking coffee and enjoy better nights of sleep now. Instead of experiencing highs and lows that come with caffeine, I experience a more steady energy/attention flow. I don't have to worry about coffee costing too much every again, weather I buy it at a coffee shop or would make my own. All the money I save on coffee I can use to buy stuff I REALLY want. Don't kid yourself, under-sleeping and the drinking coffee isn't the same as getting a good nights sleep and then not drinking coffee. One is damaging long term and the other isn't.

Coffee makes me very tired when I drink it. So I drink a lot of it. Around 3 pots a day. It helps me sleep, really. There's nothing worth doing, so that extra sleep is always nice. Then again, the doctor I used to have told me I was immune to stimulants. Maybe all those years of drinking back to back pots of coffee had something to do with it, though I don't think I have ever had a "high" or an energetic moment in my entire life.
One can't complain with free sleep, though. <3 my coffee.

Sounds like you suck at drinking coffee, if that's possible.

I think I agree with the OP. Coffee acts like a diaretic with me and even in the medium term, the coffee crash isn't worth it. I get tired after 5 hours and my thoughts are slow and feel "hazy". I don't like that feeling.
I often drink coffee during exam season but I used to get jittery from doing it and ended up doing worse on exams.
And then later on in the night getting less sleep sets me up for a bad next day. Coffee is bad for overall health and mood and for higher mental functions compared to just getting moderate sleep.

If you think coffee is bad, then definitely, definitely do not take caffeine pills. If you do, you're fucked.

Fixed that for you;).
I've never really liked the taste of coffee and instead prefer chocolate milk ^^

I love the taste of coffee too much to ever give it up. Nothing like the dark, smoky flavor of a nice french roast. I think someone would have to somehow prove that coffee is just as bad as cigarettes before I would consider it. I really only crash after I've had over 2 cups anyway, and I've found that if I take a vitamin that has a good amount of B12 in it, even that crash can be minimized. I guess that's kind of the theory behind 5-hour energy and other similar products.

coffee isn't bad if you have it in moderate amounts. i average about 5-6 hours of sleep per night and have one 8-12oz cup of coffee in the early afternoon almost every day. it's not enough to make me jittery but it definitely helps keep me awake. if you're actually trying to use coffee as a substitute for sleep more than every once in a while, then you're simply doing it wrong.

I simply enjoy drinking it because of the taste. I haven't been experiencing significant highs or lows for quite a long time unless I drink really high amounts of it, then I just get sleepy as hell and slightly nauseous I suppose. But in moderate amounts I absolutely love it, not fearing the addiction either really since I can go several days or sometimes weeks without touching a cup.

Perhaps I should try this out as well, would be nice to drink a lot without suffering the side effect crash :p

I don't know how you do it. But, more power to you.

6 hours of sleep or less i standard for me. How else are you going to have time to play sc2, play dota2, play other games you want to play, check yogscast on youtube, check dota2 matches, watch sc2 matches AND work? AND eat? AND spend time with your friends.
If only the days were longer than 24 hours T_T

I like this blog! I think it's important to listen to yourself to know what's good for you.
Here's my experience and idea:
Maybe coffee isn't meant for all people but I want to think that it depends on when, how and how much you drink.
I'm really anticipating my first cup which I seek out in the afternoon. I don't need it but it's important for me to leave the office once a day and during this break I often spent one minute almost closing my eyes to what I think of as my one minute meditation. Have you tried to do absolutly nothing in a more or less public place? It's quite hard for me. I also enjoy watching the hustle. Pastry is almost mandatory. Sometimes when I jump on the opportunity to hava an irregular cup of coffee I either enjoy or hate it. Similar to wine the taste depends of the state of the body and mind. Both go really well with food (coffee with pastry or just after lunch / dinner). I believe that I could drink endless amounts of coffee and wine in a perfect moment.
The combination of riding a high and a really good wine has to be one of the most enjoyable things for me. I hope that everybody experiences this once.
A note on the amount of sleep: For a few weeks I'm on a 5 hours schedule. I'm unsure but it might be a little harder to focus your concentration but I'm not tired. According to my experience tiredness seems to start in the mind if you have a minimum of sleep, can relax and don't do manual labor. Don't be bored or you will fall asleep.

I love the taste of coffee and I also love the little kick from the caffeine, but you're right, it should not be abused as a drug or used as a substitute for sleep. I feel way better and get way more work done with 7-8 hours of sleep + 3 cups/day compared to 5 hours of sleep + 5 cups/day.
Now that I think of it, when I was younger, I had quite low blood pressure (low enough that doctors couldn't find my radial pulse) and would get orthostatic hypotension (dizziness and black spots in vision if I stood up too quick) and claudication at rest (sometimes I would wake up at night with really bad pins and needles in my legs, bilaterally). Since I started drinking coffee, I've stopped experiencing those symptoms and my blood pressure is 120/80 every time I measure it. I'm self-medicating rofl...
Divulging my past medical history to strangers on the internet, yeah!

Isn't that just your digestive system kicking in after a solid lunch? Coffee has very little to do with that (nor, sadly, can it get you out of the dip).
I don't use coffee as a tool (to keep awake, to keep concentrated), I just like the taste and the little rituals it brings me. Having too much coffee can really mess you up, but the same thing applies to cola, sugar, milk, heck even drinking too much water can kill you.
To each its own I guess.

I rarely drink coffee. It makes me twitchy but not awake, it causes thirst and urge to urinate, and I can't get rid of the taste all day.
The exception to all of this is an Italian espresso, a concentrated bomb of aroma and flavor, as black as my soul. I don't know what they do differently in Italy, but even an espresso at a cheap highway service area is better than any coffee I've ever had outside of Italy.

I love coffee. I love the taste and it keeps me alert and productive and I rarely, if ever, experience a 'crash'. I get about 6-7 hours of sleep a night then a cup of coffee in the morning or sometimes afternoon and i feel great all day.

I started drinking it my last year of highschool. I'd havea recreational glass some nights just for watching starcraft or whatever. Later I got into the habit of just going wild and finishing the remainders of the big pot my mom was making. I was also using other stimulants recreatioally at this time of life. I'd just jump around the house with music on LOL.
Later, i used it for less fun purposes. I'd always buy an energy drink or a coffee to try to get me through a job that i hated. Eventually it stopped working so well.
Most recently I was drinking it as a morning ritual. i'd have two and a half cups and just sit on facebook.. Then i realized there was actually a pretty sucky come down. I'd be cold and my bladder would be uncomfortably full... and then i'd feel edgy..
SO now i've tried to stop using it regularly and just use it as a fun treat here and there or if i really want to get some work done.
