I love coffee but I noticed I've become more or less immune to its effects. I remember going to lectures with coffee and being wide awake and focused. Now, drinking my morning coffee does nearly nothing, but I do feel more tired at work around 2-3pm.
This week I've decided to take a 2-4week break from coffee, hoping it'll reset my tolerance (can you have a coffee tolerance?)

I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Yeah your body builds up a tolerance to just about anything from bad food to drugs to sunlight. And yeah if you take a 2-4 week break you should notice your tolerance decrease. You can try replacing a cup or two with decaf until you're not drinking caffinated anymore then slowly switch back to caffinated.
how reasonable is it to eat off wood instead of your tummy?

At the same time I personally don't believe it's ever possible to return to a state where you have no tolerance to a substance. No evidence, it's just a feeling.

I sleep only 4-6 hours a night and without something with caffeine in it I would not be able to function during the day. Coffee can fulfill this role for me, although I don't particularly enjoy the taste...

I always get brutal headaches for 2-3 days when I start decaffeinating over the breaks. Then I just rebuild up my tolerance again through the rest of the quarter, end up drinking 2-3 cups of coffee during finals week, then decaffeinate again when I have no classes.

I've started drinking more tea now, though, which has helped quite a bit.
