I’ll start with one everyone knows:
Brood War and vanilla
I remember when my friend at church told me about this cool alien game for computer. Now my dad had been an advocate of Apple through and through up until this point. This game was the sole reason we switched over to PC. I was convinced it was worth it. Playing LAN games with our three computers with my brothers was just awesome (no video game consoles, only computers was how my dad justified having so many ^^ people would comment on our “computer lab” in the family room. I’m going to break this down into sub-categories since shamefully I did not ladder but was a UMS player…
BGH
Classic game format. Fun to join with an alliance already set up and you can act like you’re not etc. No one is ever fully out of the game. Mass BC/Carrier/Devourer XD
World’s Fastest Map or whatever
I don’t remember what map clan made this but whoever thought to move the minerals all around your base was a genius in my adolescent mind. Lots of games with friends and family. Like BGH on steroids.
Cat and Mouse
Pretty solid game that had many hilarious moments of near escapes and epic fails.
Unknown RPG
I remember playing this with my bros and finding some crazy assassin’s guild in the mountains after hours of killing random monsters around a giant map. It was so open ended we never did find out if it was supposed to be that way or we downloaded an incomplete map…
Snipers
This is where it gets good. I’m really hoping someone else remembers this one. You had a Hot team and Cold team 4v4 Capture the Flag with Ghosts. Lots of trees where you could hide and avoid being shot. Also came out with an AI version and it blew my mind they were able to do it so well with a BW UMS game.
Day at School
Not sure of exact name but it was an RPG where you picked a type of student, i.e. Loner, Jock, etc. You level up and become older versions of yourself. Loner becomes a unibomber I think… pretty random game but I just remembered it as I was writing this.
Golems
Classic game of diplomacy. Had facepalm moments when you went to buy the hero unit you’d saved 8 civilians for and they ran around each other on the way and died for some other useless unit on the portal next over.
So lots of great memories with Brood War. Loved making up new handles for myself like “Lone§niper” and “|)ark” in front of anything pretty much made you a boss. Oh and spoofing your name so you had colored text. Yeah I was pretty much the coolest for “hacking” that action.
Warcraft III
Loved the campaign. Played a lot of games versus the computer. Played a couple ladder games. But once again there were some custom games that shone.
Uther Party
This game is pure awesome in a LAN party setting (my typical setting, every day of summer was this XD) Bunch of hilarious mini-games that had a lot of interaction between the players. Could also cast invisible on units in free play phase (invisible bumper boats anyone?)
Warlockz
Fantastic physics based game. Casters on a platform trying to knock each other off into the lava or just out right kill the other person. High skill ceiling which was a bonus and allowed for sick plays. Apparently has a couple serious players as one time we played in a game on battle.net and got smack talked the entire game??
Various tower defenses
This could go under BW as well. There were a couple solid ones I can remember. Azure TD (Blizzard map contest winner), Elemental TD, and Legion TD.
Soldiers
Amazing platform shooter. Could choose what weapon to spawn you Rifleman with and game types like deathmatch and capture the flag. All rockets was virtually a blast. Cool physics and headshots. It got so popular they had tournaments and then took it off WC3 and you can’t download it anymore?! Wat. -.-
Haunted Mansion
You run around a castle trying to collect gear to protect yourself and find the key to escape the mansion. Everyone looks exactly the same but one of you is the killer. Hilarity ensues with people trying to cover or turn their monitor away from others, random mobbings of innocents, and shrieks of terror for no good reason. Loads of fun when it’s late and everyone is slap-happy. Not so much online by yourself.
Some educational games. I’m not exactly sure how the crappy stuff of today compares, but back in the day there were some pretty baller games geared at learning. I’m going to leave the entertainment oriented ones for after so there’s some structure.
Dinosaur Adventure
Dinosaurs are pretty cool, especially when you’re 8 years old. I had Jurassic Park pajamas, dinosaur sheets and pillowcases and a bunch of incredibly (unbelievably?) detailed books about dinosaurs. Taking it to the next level, Dinosaur Adventure 3-D. Yeah. You explored around and found dinosaurs that moved around and looked real! I think I remember following footprints and going to a museum?
Gizmos and Gadgets
The first of the Super Solver games mentioned here. This guy was so mysterious with his hat and collar popped (way ahead of his time). Old Morty was at it again and you have to defeat him in a bunch of rather arbitrary races. To top it off, the jerk has recruited his cyber-chimps to mug you throughout the warehouse. Game was cool with the two sides (front and back) so sometimes finding the item you needed was more of a maze puzzle. I’m going to attribute the foundation of my engineering/physics knowledge to this game.
Midnight Rescue
This time Morty is going to make the school disappear with invisible paint. I’m not sure I was exactly opposed to his cunning plan but there were puzzles to solve and that’s all I needed. One of those bizarre robots was the Master of Mischief and I was going to find out who before midnight.
Number (and Word) Munchers
This one is old. Good for working on your math and grammar skills. Munch the right answers on the grid to pass the level, if you get hit or munch a wrong answer you lose a life. This got super intense as the more levels you progressed the faster the Troggles and you moved. Got the 8 year old adrenaline pumping.
Spelunx
This one took a lot of digging. I have very vague memories of a mysterious building you could explore. One of those games you just click around and interact with the environment.
The Incredible Machine
Puzzle game in which you were given an environment and certain parts to place and you had to achieve some goal specified. Levels got increasingly more difficult. This was a well-made game and one of the aspects that made it stand out was its awesome sound track
I’m pretty sure there’s a family video of me and my brothers dancing to “Hip Hop” like we’re too cool for school.
The… Dr. Brain…Island, Lost Mind, Time Machine
Dr. Brain was a boss. Dude knew how to make some puzzlers. Lost mind and Island were ok but the Time Machine was so good. Caveman Rock, the beaver dams, traffic lights, amoeba surviving in the primordial ooze, lungfish trying to survive long enough on air bubbles. I loved this game! A lot of replay value too which is nice.
The Playroom, The Backyard, The Treehouse
The Playroom had various activities you could do by clicking around the room. The mousehole game was pretty awesome. There's also this crazy green monster dude that stays with the series in The Backyard.
I get excited every time I see these things again. Drawing with the airplane, vegetable pumpkin face, and especially the sandbox treasure map game were fun. The third installment was The Treehouse. I can still hear that song playing in my head... "Hanging out... in the treehouse. Hanging out... in the tree house." There was a hangman-like elimination game to guess what animal was in the tree and a taxi game. These were all pretty cool at the time
Thinkin' Things
Another puzzle game with various activities to choose from.
Treasure Cove
Explore an underwater world and collect clues from starfish to find the hidden gems. After collecting them all you dodge a shark and eventually after collecting enough you restore the rainbow bridge lol. These treasure games were my first exposure to collect meaningless virtual trinkets until you have them all
Treasure Mountain
Treasuer Mountain is similar but you you snag jumping elves with a net to get the clues. You drop hidden coins to see if the keys are behind objects and eventually get to pickaxe your way up the mountain, avoiding the Master of Mischief, and safely depositing the treasure in the chest. Like Treasure Cove, you collect prizes for ascending the mountain and get to restart from the beginning on a harder difficulty.
Zoombinis
This game is like a puzzle quest game where you try to get the Zoombini people to some far off destination. The puzzles were entertaining and you got to customize your people with different characteristics that would affect how the puzzles worked. Mud slinging on a wall and making a pizza. I used the idea for a project in middle school where you had to make up a culture and present on it. My teacher had no idea the Zambinis true inspiration
More video games without an educational focus:
Crystal Quest
This game is ancient. I remember playing this on a tiny MacIntosh. Your little spaceship shoots the direction your moving. Levels get increasingly hectic and the enemy space ships more and more ridiculous. Crazy 8 colors total or something haha.
Glider
This game probably makes it into my top 5 favorite childhood games. As an airplane you try to get to the last room of really like world. Each time you reached the edge the screen shifted to show you the new room. You glide along on air vents trying to not run into tables and counters which caused you to lose your plane. Perks like Batter, Foil, and Rubber Bands all helped you avoid zapping outlets, drips, enemy airplanes and helicoptors, and even toasters that pop up toast at you. The original game even showed you how to fold one in real life Also had a designer feature where you could make your own levels. You can even play it for free now here!
KidPix
Random drawing game that was just interesting so I put it here lol.
King’s Quest V
Classic rpg for the mac. I remember working my way through this when I was really young. I needed my brother's help with the cheat manual at the very end for the final confrontation. You would grab innocuous object from one part of the world for them to be useful somewhere else. You get a honeycomb to distract a bear from destroying an ant hill and the ants help you find a needle in a haystack. Stuff like that. Pretty epic in its entirety. Played through it again a few summers back and man did I have patience as a little kid.
Lego Racer
If Mario Kart was for the pc and you could design your own cart using legos and go through a cool racing campaign then you have Lego Racer. Running from the Abominable Snowman and through Jurassic times was pretty epic.
Lode Runner
Some of my favorite memories are from this game. Epic escapes with a friend from those hooded monks made for a thrilling time. The levels often had some trick or puzzle to them to figure out how to advance. This game also had a level creator and was such a solid game overall. I think a new one came out when I was in high school but it just wasn't the same.
Power Pete
Pretty comical top-down shooter. You're a toy man who comes to life in a toy store and you have to escape. Your adventure takes you through various zones like a dinosaur section with tar, hungry dinosaurs etc. You pick up new and better weapons and try to shoot your way out.
Dark Castle
Another very old game. I have never actually beaten this game lol. I would play with my dad and I remember this was just sooo intense. This dude chucks beer mugs at you while you try to climb up inside the castle!
This blog was just as much me revisiting some childhood memories as sharing some games with you. I've blued games I think are have actual play value now. Feel free to share some games that make you nostalgic or some memories of games I mentioned. I'll try to add some pics when I get more time and I want to keep posting on TL ^^ Thanks for reading
