Sci-fi, romance, comedy, slice of life, critically acclaimed, etc. give some specifications. Or alternatively just watch Neon Genesis Evangelion because it has everything.

Personally, I usually recommend romantic comedies to my friends getting into anime because they're generally the easiest to get into. Try something like Toradora! (you can also find this on the chart above)

Also includes lots of "superhuman" fun things people encounter.) -Cowboy Bebop (Space Cowboys. Bountyhunters running around and.. trying to collect bounties. Quite awesome story in the long run, AWESOME music)

No i'm sure that anybody who can realize major plotholes and the likes will realize that after a certain point it plummets and becomes incredibly mediocre, only being saved by animation and soundtrack. There are a ton of better animes and mangas. The death note anime is fine, but if the animation and soundtrack hadn't been as superb as they were, it would really only be a mediocre anime. The story has a lot of flaws, but it's a fine anime, but calling it the best ever really isn't true, it might be your opinion, which is fine, but yea. If you want to get into anime, i'd recommend something like Cowboy bebop, it's the only thing i'll recommend with this little information, give me more information about genres and stuff and i can make a more educated guess at a series you'd enjoy. Also, generally sub>dub. Edit: This isn't the thread to discuss death note though, so i wont go further down that path of discussion.

was ruined after L died. They also made Light into some crazed psychopath rather than the character he started out as, which was supremely disappointing. And to me, the drawing changed a lot as the series went on; might be my imagination. That and they killed Light, which was just stupid. As for some good to start out with, I'd stray from long running ones so you can watch something and get an idea for your tastes and the genres. To cover some basic bases: Death Note Ouran High School Host Club Samurai Champloo Neon Genesis Evangelion

one of the main characters death, and name But here's a list of what I'd recommend in no particular order. Death-Note - genius gets a note that lets him kill people, and does battle with a genius who wants to stop him Mirai Nikki - a god gives 13 people the ability to see fragments of a possible future, and makes them battle to the death Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Giant robots, manly speeches, epic fights. Steins; Gate - Scientist accidentally invents a form of time travel, shit goes down. Darker than Black - some humans have superpowers, all of them have a consequence for using them, except one guy with no consequence who hunts/kills other super humans. Elfen Lied - (my first anime) a naked chick with weird powers kills a lot of people Code Geass - Genius with a superpower controls people fighting in giant robots Angel Beats! - watch it and find out The next ones are all sort of girly, but still good. maybe not your best anime to start on, but work your way through them after you've watched some other anime Lucky Star Chuubinyou Kokoro Connect Clannad / Clannad Afterstory Kanon K-On!

The downside to anime sometimes is they don't always get to tell a full story because they only get 1 or 2 seasons animated. (Berserk, Kenichi) Code Geass had a complete story though.

I just finished Code Geass yesterday. That was a very good anime. Very wide-audience appeal, every episode has a lot of action in it, huge character development throughout the story. That's what I'd recommend. Also Death Note, Trigun, FMA, FMA: BH, Clannad, Air, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, first 2/3 of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

For the record, Brotherhood follows the manga directly and has a much more coherent storyline. The original FMA reached the end of the monthly manga series pretty quickly and then just made up some shit to cover for the fact that they didn't know where it was headed. Brotherhood >> FMA.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - (Mech/Comedy) - I've seen this about 3 times. It's awesome, has an amazing storyline, amazing fights while being a hilarious spoof of other Mech animes. It's only 27 episodes so well worth watching. I have to recommend this to ANYONE I know who watches/has watched anime and not seen it. Darker than Black - (Action/Sci-Fi/Paranormal) Not much to say other than its awesome, a bit confusing, especially since throughout most of the series not much is revealed about the main character. Again, awesome fights and deep storyline. FLCL - (Comedy/Random/Mech) I fell in love with this the first time I watched it. It's very short (6 episodes) and gripping, funny, great action (wouldn't really call them fight?) scenes and some of the best animation there is out there. Neon Genesis Evangelion - (Mech) - Starts off slow, but its one of the better mech series around. Definitely worth a watch. Death Note was good for the first half, but it got quite poor towards the end and had one of the most anti-climatic endings of anything ever. Definitely not in the top tier of stuff.

Samurai Champloo - Follows the story of 2 samurai who follow a girl around that wants to find a Samurai that smells like sunflowers. Story sounds bad, but the action is great. IIRC, same producer as Cowboy Bebop, so if you like that, you will like this without a doubt. Has similar comedy that Cowboy Bebop has too. Hellsing Ultimate - About an organisation called Hellsing that eliminate vampires. Honestly, I've watched a lot of the really popular action Animes. By far, Hellsing has THE BEST action scenes I've seen. Unfortunately, Hellsing Ultimate isn't finished yet, ep 10 comes out next month apparently. Highly recommend watching, it is my favourite anime after Death Note. Initial D - An anime about mountain car racing in Japan, where the main character drives an AE86. Really good anime, has a lot of funny moments. The only downfall is some of the stupidity in driving "tactics" that let them win sometimes, but otherwise this anime is really awesome. In a list of really popular/recommended anime that pretty much every person that is a fan of anime will watch - the list will look like (no order): Berserk Darker than Black FLCL Black Lagoon Samurai Champloo Death Note Cowboy Bebop Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Trigun Initial D Hellsing Ultimate Gurren Lagaan Gungrave Elfen Lied Neon Genesis Evangelion Code Geass Ghost in the shell I would highly suggest getting your hands on all of those and watching them before you get anything else. They're all pretty much the most "mainstream" animes. People that have only watched an anime series or two will definitely have watched any of those.

I think it's the most enjoyable gundam series and one of the best anime works to date. once L dies there is no point to continue watching the show: It should have just ended right now. L might be my favorite fictional character ever. I actually have watched around 100 episodes of Detective Conan since I really love mysteries, but that show is kind of ruined by the idiotic premise. I'm gonna hijack the thread a little bit with a more specific question: What are good animes for someone that really likes mysteries and Death Note? I don't care for big robots, epic fights, and honestly I don't even care all that much about art style. I like Sherlock Holmes type mental battles, which is why I loved Death Note. Other stuff like it? Or that has really good mysteries/detective work?

Definitely not in the top tier of stuff. Anti-climactic? The ending of Death Note is the only thing that redeems the mess that is the 2nd half. Death Note's greatest failure remains that: + Show Spoiler + For as much as the show attempts to portray itself as a battle of wits, the show is eventually ended on a single suspension of logic. Near makes the conclusion that Mikami is Light's henchman. He has no actual evidence of this, and he spots him out by watching a ton of TV screens at the same time, and then magically guessing that Mikami is the likely ally of Light, based on his behaviour. It makes literally no sense, and it perfectly displays how the show had eventually gotten too clever for it's own sake, and the writers themselves couldn't keep up with all the plotting and the scheming, so they resolved it by just once, suspending the reason, and making a magical leap. "If you let us make this one leap in logic, we promise to end the series." The loss of L was a major blow for the show, especially because it relied so heavily on the conflict between L and Light. The show could have innovated itself, but it just rebooted the same setup, now replacing L with a miniature replica that was just atrocious. Death Note was good fun, but one kind of has to turn his brain of to some degree. Nobody will ever know what the fuck was going on when they were trading Death Notes in the forest.

I would look at these ones as much watch recommendations. Cowboy Bebop Simply put one of the greatest animes ever produced. Multidimensional characters, great art, storytelling and humour. The movie is a good followup as well. Neon Genesis Evangelion A very good re imagining of a mecha show. Has some convoluted and complicated symbolism and undertones, and the ending is supremely disappointing. The movies that have been coming out are a reboot of the series and will have a proper ending unlike the show, but even with these flaws its a must watch. FLCL Crazy pyscho mindfuck. Good humour, great art, but a lot of its quality is difficult to interpret with Japanese puns and lightning fast dialogue. Bakemonogatari Interesting show, great art, good humour. This Second tier is good animes, that sort of remind me of other animes, but not quite as good. Or just animes that are consensus good shows, but not my favorite. Or just personal favorites. Baccano - Kind of like a homage to Cowboy Bebop. Short, but very enjoyable. Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - Good high school character drama, some funny parts, and very believable characters. Deathnote - Consensus good show that I never got hugely into. Eureka 7 - Feels like an homage to NGE, but less EVAs, more drama... kinda. Eden of the East - Feels like it could have been the best show ever, but a slightly dissapointing end, and odd art style. Kore wa Zombie desu ka - Bit too much harem pandering, but excellent humour and good art. Xam'd - Feels like a show that could be done by Ghibli or Miyazaki. I tried to stay away from those typcial Shonen Jump animes, or Ecchi animes because they are a dime a dozen and if I listed off the ones I enjoyed watching I would fill pages. And stay away from dubs. Even the 'good' ones are awful compared to the original voice acting. Japanese voice actors are pretty much celebrities in Japan and for good reason, they are specialized and specifically trained in their craft. As for animes to avoid. I know a lot of people are recommending Gundam and Code Geass, but I would stay away from them. Gundams are massed produced series and are more often misses then hits, or regurgitations of other, better animes. As for Code Geass, I downloaded the first three season on a high recommendation of a friend. I forced myself to at least watch the first 3 episodes and that's all I was able to put myself through. I won't go into much detail, but the characters all felt disgustingly artificial and pretentious, and despite their emaciated looks are all verging on superhuman athleticism and intelligence, with no reasonable explanations. It all just felt way too stupid and I couldn't relate to any of the characters or take any of their dilemmas to heart. A lot of the other recommended animes like Azumanga and Ouran High School Host Club are really hard to get into for first time animers. You'd probably want to be watching for a while and if you get into it alot start to branch out to other stuff.

I would recommend Time of Eve. It is about a futuristic society where robots are servants to humans, and humans are at odds with how robots should be treated in society. It is really short; and if you can overlook the trace amounts of cheesiness, it is something you will most likely enjoy. That is, if you are looking for food for thought. It is a rather nice commentary on human behavior.

Mirai Nikki: The story is a psychological battle between humans chosen by God to kill each other until the winner becomes the new God. I really liked the plot and how fucked up some characters got (esp the main female character) Steins;Gate:It's a sci-fi anime about a few university students discovering a time machine by an accident and trying to alter events. Spice and Wolf: It's a story of a merchant and his wolf deity companion (I actually learned a lot about business). It's not flashy, it doesn't have magical battles or epic fights. It's actually quite plain which I consider to be its charm point. I don't really like romance in animes, but this anime is the one anime that made me go d'awwwwww. Gintama: It's really hard to explain what this anime is like because it's a very unique kind. Has every genre I can think of. This is the only anime I laughed my ass off (I didn't really like the first 20 or so eps because I went like WTF but after it gets really good, it's current over 200 episodes)

It's basically the same...filter through the crap to find the quality. Considering that most years only have 1-3 shows that are really worth looking for, it makes sense that most stuff is older. If you want stuff within 5 years...I'd say... Darker than Black - Good action series with good animation. Gets philosophical, so avoid if you hate that stuff. Watch second season and OVAs if you really liked the first. Bakemonogatari - Fanservicey, but enjoyable for layered dialogue and wordplay (Japanese wordplay, unfortunately). Also good action sequences, when there is action. Heroman - Fun homage to Silver Age western super heroes, Japanese style Sentai/Kaiju shows, and general "classic" cartoons. Basic plot was also made by Stan Lee (sucks for him that no Western dub yet). Fate/Zero - Better if you know the source material for Fate/Stay Night, but works fine as a standalone series. Another - Best horror/supernatural mystery I've seen in a while. Definitely recommended if you like those genres, worth checking out the first episode if you're curious. There's other stuff I'm forgetting, plus I don't really watch shows until they're finished...

I finally got around to watching it and I have to say that NGE is really one of the worst anime to watch as a first anime. Its plot is incredibly stupid on a surface level and the main characters are mostly not likeable. If you're an experienced anime watcher and you're willing to take a chance on something more esoteric, then maybe it deserves the accolades it receives. It's certainly not for the uninitiated. Something like Cowboy Bebop is significantly more accessible (especially since it was dubbed well, a rarity). It has likeable heroes and vicious enemies ![]() Death Note is a good clever psychological show, especially the first half. The second half was okay, but a huge letdown from the first half. For those looking for something similar, I've heard very good things about Monster, but haven't personally watched it yet. If you're looking for something (mostly) less serious, try Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I'm actually currently in the process of watching it and it's been surprisingly good so far despite looking like it's made for a younger audience. It's fun/goofy on the surface, but again, there's some solid depth to it both in characters and philosophy... which seems to be a key to successful anime. Trigun is another oldie, but a goodie. Like Cowboy Bebop, just about every American who got into anime through adult swim has watched Trigun. The First half is much more lighthearted than the second half, but both halves are good in their own way. If you just want to watch something that's crazy nonsensical fun, try Fooly Cooly (FLCL). Another oldie from the adult swim lineup and a very short series so you won't waste too much time getting through it even if it's not your thing. Of the Gundam series, I'd say that the most accessible is Gundam Seed and would start there (I still haven't seen the original series though, only 08th MS Team from that timeline which was a decent one). I'd say that Seed had more likeable characters than Gundam Wing and some decent depth, but not quite as much political depth as Wing. If you want something along the lines of Dragon Ball Z, you'll need to get into the Shonen Manga style shows. One Piece (pirates - starts slow, but great story that's still 5-10 years from completion), Bleach (soul reapers - starts well, but falls apart), Naruto (ninjas - still haven't seen it), or something older like Inuyasha (demons - interesting, but just seems to go on and on) or Yu Yu Hakusho (punk kid vs demons - another cartoon network hit from long ago).
