Hi, this is my first topic, let alone blog, so please be patient. This is half a rant and half looking for help. The main reason I'm writing this is because I feel typing it out will let me chill out and compose myself.
For the past couple months I haven't had much fun playing SC2 on ladder. I love playing for CSL and practicing with the team, but that's all I really have at this point. Ladder makes me angry/upset because I feel like I haven't improved in a very long time. I've been stuck at top 8 diamond for almost 3 months now.
I don't blame the game anymore, I blame myself and THAT makes me angry. I see so many holes in my play and whenever I dedicate time to work on one, something else gets exploited. I've tried taking breaks, offracing, watching replays, everything to improve my mindset. But it just doesn't get fun, and I don't get better. When I get that amazing 40 min TvT, or an epic comeback in a TvZ I feel like I accomplished something great and see potential, but those happen every 30 games or so.
I think part of it is because SC2 is no longer a game to me, it's my competitive hobby and I've realized I'm awful at it. Combined with most of my friends leaving the game, its becoming more and more of a depressing experience. But I haven't given up, I have my list of goals to reach. I'm just stuck inbetween steps.
I've considered streaming but my PC isn't good enough and I don't feel like I have the personality to keep viewers, and I'd rather not rage on stream haha. I'm open to advice about anything really, whether its with my play itself or my approach. Even comments of support would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Been there. Jus take a break from 1v1, do teamgames, try crazy tactics, do arcade. Master league here, also trying to improve, but its the same as you describe...my PvZ is awesome with 80% winrate, but my PvT and PvP sucks...so now im trying to learn more standard play in those match-ups...but its hard, everytime something new comes up that kills me...and then i realise if it wasnt for my PvZ i wouldnt even belong in master league. Im mostly waiting for hots right now to re-ignite my desire to become better in sc2.
If you really want to improve, force yourself to play games, its going to suck, and it wont be fun all the time...but it will be rewarding in the end. And yea, i had been stuck in high diamond too for a long while, but you need to continue playing and playing and playing. focus on 1 matchup at a time.. and just mass alot of games.
But most important you should ask the question: Do i want to be the best in this game? or do i just want to have fun?
Lifes a bitch, and sometimes you need to work hard for things, especially in starcraft this is true, because if you want to become the best you need to work harder then everyone else. Nobody can get to the top on talent alone

It's not fun because there is still things in the game that make in literally not enjoyable to play or to watch but that's all I'm going to say about that. It is tough to play for a lot of people to not have the same interaction that there are in other games (i.e. BW, War3, Diablo 2).
With that being said you have to sort of put those feelings aside, as hard as that may be, and make a promise to yourself that'll you play x amount of games per day.
I think you should give this a look: http://www.complexitygaming.com/forums/entry.php?b=2054 and perhaps a few others I've written in hopes that maybe you will be able to find something useful, however big or small, from them.
Also, again, work on the core concepts of scouting, reacting to what you scout and what your opponent is showing you, realize the higher you go the more they're trying to potentially fool you with what they show you (if they're smart), macro, micro, lucky coins, and hard counters. Because it wouldn't be SC2 if the last two listed weren't involved ^^. Anyone good enough can do pretty much any sub-optimal build they want at the diamond/low-mid master level and still win without much problem, so make sure you really do work on those things so you can start rising to the top.

Thanks for the advice, I love that motivation video. For the first week or so I found it much more fun, but once I got my mmr back up to borderline masters I just started losing a ton again. Thankfully I don't rage much now, and maybe I'm just playing better people now. Is there a more efficient way of practice than just churning out ladder games though? Since I don't really have many people to practice with,

Yeah I know that feeling. Trying to improve and constantly seeing how bad you are... The better you get, the more holes in your play you see. Ugh, so frustrating.
I only really play 2vs2 and 3vs3 with friends now. A lot of fun without the stress. I'm going to take some time off work for HotS and I'll be giving 1vs1 another go then.
|
Maybe I should start playing some HotS too, I don't think I even finished my placement matches yet. It's definitely less stressful than trying to get promoted.

If the game isn't fun, don't play it. Take a break. You aren't doing "ESPORTS" or whatever nonsense any favors by playing.

Do what I've been doing and not take it seriously whatsoever. I used to always want to win every game and rage a bit when I lose but now I just laugh and do wonky builds (though most of the time I just play normally and go with the flow).
In heart of the swarm beta, I just play the living mess out of unranked to get better, since it doesn't affect you if you lose. If I do play 1v1, I just play. I don't care what rank or league I'm in since it's beta and anything can change.
In WoL, I just play team games and troll around. I don't take ANYTHING seriously when it comes to team games. In 1v1 however, I'll have to at least try a bit. Though recently I've tried to stay in the lower leagues to practice builds until I go all out and try to get to the higher leagues.
