**EDIT** Moved to blog, sorry about confusion/wrong forum
I just watched last nights episode of ITG as i didn't have time yesterday. I just thought to myself "what are people thinking". It seems to me that everyone is so worried about getting "new" or more "casual" players to play SC2 to make it "grow", as it does help the game, its not exactly what we need as a community to grow the game.
To be honest all that does is increase blizzards check book. What we need as a community is to get more people to WATCH SC2. The viewership is what brings the money to the tournaments and sponsors because they consume the sponsored products and view the sport.
Everyone is absolutely going about this the wrong way and needs to focus on attracting peoples eyes to watching the sport. DjWheat made the comment about Breaking Bad and American Idol. American Idol is way more successful! however not everyone is singing are they? No! its just entertainment and people enjoy it!
I do not feel that sc2 is hurt on viewership at all and everything will just break down to bring more eyeballs to the sport. How we go about that is what should be up for discussion, not whether blizzard can fix everything themselves. The bottom line is pros will play the game regardless and we as a community need to tune in to help the growth or sustain the sport.
Everyone can argue that the game needs to be fixed. Yes there is issues that need to be looked at, however that is the opposite point of the game possibly being dead. Most of the imbalance issues really appeal to the pros who play the game, as it affects them drastically more than the casuals. This does bring to issue that it can possibly hurt viewership, but that is also determined by the knowledge of the viewer and lets face it not every viewer sees or knows these things are happening right in front of them.
We can do a better job at making the game more understandable to the audience so that people can actually process those quick vital actions taken by pros that means a great swing in the match up. Some tournaments/streams/shows started this about a year ago but I really haven't seen this touched up on or improved upon.
We should all step back and think just for a moment that the possible "doubt" you may have about the game was created by your own view on how you perceive other games succeeding in areas we are not. Easy to understand content will bring better numbers. No matter how you look at all this talk or drama about the sky falling, your all talking about numbers. Djwheat was right on this show that this is what everything is about. Growth is about numbers. Sustainability is about numbers.
I'm have not studied business but I am aware how some of this money is moved just by doing some simple research which is available to everyone. If you took the time to read this thank you very much! If you would like to comment back or leave one please do so.

All this falling skies are self fulfilling prophecies. The leagues are still going, and expansion will come, the tournament stream numbers are still good. Who cares if another game has more viewers, as long as the industry can still sustain. Both can co-exist, and anyway both are compatible and I'd even say both are good for each other, because ESPORTS is still a thing that people have interest in and a lot of people like watching games, any games and all games. I still got my daily GSL dose, and that's all I need to be happy. I don't care if some popular streamers aren't popular enough anymore, especially the one I have in mind xD

i agree, we can coexist with any other game out there. i don't feel SC2 is threatened at all. i stated i feel our viewership is fine but if people want to make it grow its about the viewership

I am a casual player. I left SC2 a month or two ago. I think I am like a lot of people. I like Blizzard games, I have played D2, War3, WoW and of course SC2.
I also play a lot of other games, TL2 or whatever is popular on Steam. PS3 games, etc.
There are a lot of choices for a casual gamer. I got into SC2 when it came out. I loved the community, I liked watching the games on twitch. I even paid for the first season of NASL.
But alas, my attention is elsewhere now.
I think of all the games I played War 3 has been the most similar to sc2. Because it was made by blizzard and of course it was RTS. Some of the things that kept me around so long in the War 3 scene were 1) the custom maps, 2) the clan channels I could visit, and 3) there were no leagues, just records, and if you didn't like the one you had, you could just create a new account.
The custom maps in SC2 are ok, but not great. I am not a map maker, I just consume them. Burb TD, Peon wars, and DotA custom games just seemed better in War 3.
There really is no excuse as to why the SC2 game isn't focused around Channels. In War 3 you new where to go to hang out. I have nowhere in SC2. I can't just chill in a Team Liquid Clan channel where there may be some TL players. IN War 3 I could hang out in channels where there were who I thought were godly players.
Trivia. It seems so stupid, but it game me something to do while hanging out. I had a channel for trivia, a channel for clans, a channel for my buddies, a channel for everything. The community and where to interact with others was IN THE GAME. It was not on Team liquid, or on Twitch TV, or on Skype. Everything was in game. The decentralized community of SC2 might just be a problem.
And finally. I am a casual. I am not a pro. I know 99% of Team Liquid forum posters are GMs. But I am not. I was just a plat protoss player that played about 7 games a week on average.
And you know what? right now I don't like my account. I want to start another one. And I would too if I could. I would probably come back right now if Blizzard added the functionality to start as many account names as you want. No pressure at all.
GAMES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT PLEASURE NOT PRESSURE.
Give me an account I can cheese on. That I can 4v4 on, that I don't care about. Then I will play. Scrap the whole league system. I don't want to be a plat player. War 3 was perfect. It showed your record with each race, and each type of game. No league. That's what I want. Then when I am like everyone else that is 500, I will feel better about the game, and myself.

Well said, and I agree with all your point, but I don't think it addresses the blogger's main point. He's saying that we as a community should tune in to help support, regardless of whether or not we play the game or not. However, I think this is where the error lies. The community of a game are the people who are engaged and active with the game, and still have some interest in it. But although TL is a community created for Starcraft(BW) at first, now it's dedicated to progaming news in general. In fact, a lot of people on TL come for the forums, and don't play SCII at all. People have just lost interest in the game, because for some it just isn't that fun to watch anymore. What can we do when people don't watch or play because of that?

this is another point to make and to discuss. thank you for bringing this up. we need to acknowledge current viewers and new/old ones however i do think that in some time you may give it a chance to watch some more games here and there. which isn't bad and is still supporting everything no one is meant to watch 100% of the time
