I compiled all available data on blogs ratings (for all users on TL who have blogs) and performed a rudimentary analysis. I wanted to verify some hypotheses I had formed over the years about blog ratings. The first and most obvious thing was: how often is each rating given out (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5)? Here is the result:
As you can see, 1 and 5 are handed out the most, by far. In fact, out of the 317 blogs I have written (prior to this one), over half of them received a balanced number of "1"s and "5"s with no 2 3 or 4.
Moving on, I took a look at how post count affected the average score offered (I had to round to various posting landmarks):
There doesn't seem to be any recognizable pattern here. I realized I have to dig a little deeper in order to figure out what makes users rate blogs the way they do. I moved on to a study of how the number of times a user was banned affected the blog ratings they tended to issue on average:
A hah! A clear linear pattern! I haven't double checked the linear regression yet, but it's clear that getting banned more very predictably decreases the score you give blogs. Something I want to study but don't have the necessary data for yet is how rating tendencies of my blogs are affected by me temp banning the user.
I didn't want to stop there... I went a full step further still. For all users who share their SC2 names and battle tags I looked up their game history and saw if it could be used to predict ahead of time how they would tend to rate blogs on TL:
The last thing I did was comb through the data to find out who the biggest abuser of TL Blog ratings was. The answer is + Show Spoiler +

This blog is so good haha.

I fell for it until that last one.

Yess! I average 100-110 APM, I must be one of the best bloggers on this site! + Show Spoiler + the only reason my blogs got lower rating was because the wrong people viewed them and marked poorly, it was luck, not because my blog was ACTUALLY bad

LOLOL 4/5 because 5/5 is apparently too mainstream
|
Damn, a glitch in the matrix! I am both 5 and 0, perfect and the perfectly incomplete.
edit - You get a 2 because I don't think I've ever rated a blog a 2/5 before.

Somehow I suspected that ban thing. 5/5 to skew your data.

so good ^_^
Now can we see the stats pre-"this blog" and post-"this blog" to see if this single blog affects the blog proposting meta game?
|
My blogs only got 5/5 ratings, so my readers are essentially 110apm users who have never been banned ? Interesting.
|
since i got a temp i've no shame to only give you a 4 :D
|
200 apm... Looks like I have to rate you a 1.
Just kidding this blog is a pretty good blog. I'm going to rate a 5.
|
I average around 90 apm so I gave it a 4. Interesting stuff.

Where are the actual data points for that last graph? It's a suspiciously perfect curve, but not funny enough to assume it's a joke. Is it just made up?

The entire blog is a joke.

Argh I don't know how to rate this blog
Based on my post count I should give 3/5, but according to my # of bans I should be giving 5/5 and if I use my APM then I should give you 1/5 D:
|
I'm rating 4.5/5 just to hipster it up out of those normal 4/5 people, I can't even rate it 4.5/5 and I'm doing it
|
im on like the top 100 banned users list and i often give out 5s, bucking the trend like a real hipster.
|
Because of the guideline graphs I struggled between giving you a 5 (haven't been banned) and 3 (post count). However I then realised that I needed to do further checks for size of your TL folder on your hard drive (29GB), number of times these two threads were visited (many, many times) and divide that by the square root of umbrellas made per second normalised to the current penguin population.
Having found a disturbing lack of that important information in your blog post, I must rate it a 1/5. + Show Spoiler + Nah entertainment value 5/5 and that's the purpose of a blog, right? That and awful girl advice which is kind of entertainment as well...
|
Well, there's no data point for my number of posts, but roughly averaging my bans and my sucking at SC2, I went ahead and rated the blog.
I was generous and didn't count the lack of data for 10k posts as a 0, so you got a 2/5. I might have been generous.

So.... why do users feel compelled to rate blogs in the way the statistics suggest they will? What free thinkers you aren't!

Funny, but be careful not to imply causal relationships between data which merely correlates Many theories could be asserted based on the data, such as that there are a large number of people who get banned for being angry and aggressive, and that might translate to how they rate blogs. Giving ones to blow off steam is truly our generation's punching of the pillow ;p
As a matter of unfortunate fact, though, those who don't understand that most people use the rating system as a binary (1 or 5) and instead try to give those midway ranks for things they like but don't think are perfect, end up making blogs they think are good look worse. 1-5 means nothing to most people. A system of letter grades is generally familiar tho, so maybe grades would be more meaningful (even tho the system would calculate them as numbers). There's lots of blogs I'd give 5 that I wouldn't give an A+. Most girl problem blogs are probably a C. Save F for stuff I really think is trash and will be closed, D for stuff that had some effort but was a total failure. keke. Unfortunately quality of a blog and how much people agree with it are considered during the same process, with the latter taking the bigger slice of the cake.
Overall a good start to your Blogonomics Thesis.

When a clown gets banned, All of their 1s are lifted. More clowns should be purged. [;

I was about to rate this a 1 but then I realized doing that might suggest that I have a lower APM, more bans in the future, and therefore a smaller e-peen.
5/5
+ Show Spoiler +You had me going up till the linear graph. LOL

I think this blog will cause people to only rate blogs 2-4 from now on.
