Joedaddy, give Leth0 some lessons, that's well played. I think the key comes down to something well researched and contextual, rather than rage-y, making it a successful counter-troll.

Although I have to ask, did you intentionally take some liberties for the sake of visible difference, or did you fail chunks of research?

Specific Example question:

I knew this guy who was a stay at home dad. This guy spent a ton of time on the internet blogging, posting, and gaming. Time that could have been used to spend with his toddler son. I liked this guy, a lot. So, I felt like an intervention was needed when he asked me what I thought about his idea of getting his pre-school aged child into gaming.

I told him that instead of spending a huge chunk of his day on the computer, while his wife was working hard to provide for their family, that he should spend that time:
1) working towards a goal that ended with him being gainfully employed. Your wife should not be left to carry the financial burden alone.
2) save his computer time until after his kid was asleep (the time spent interacting with strangers on the internet can and should be spent with his kid)
3) make damn sure he spent more time with his wife and kid than he did with his games and internet sites
4) kids need to be outside. running, playing, using their imaginations etc. rather than letting the tv and computers babysit them while their parents invest their time into anon. internet forums/games/etc.

I mean, I guess I was kind of mean when I told him he was a crappy dad. I could have left out the part about how his wife was eventually going to get tired of her husband putting more time and energy into his internet activities than their own child.

Anywho, needless to say, he got really_really mad at me after this conversation. I didn't know how I should respond. He was ready to fight, almost (but he's a really scrawny stereotypical nerd who never threw, or took, a punch in his life). So, I told him that if he didn't want my honest opinion, that he shouldn't have asked.

Maybe he was being sensitive? How should I have responded? If he wasn't being sensitive, then where is the line between "thin skinned bitch" and legitimately upset?

Wow, you spent alot of time to make this hate post. What is your problem?

Did you read the OP? That was by far the best played response so far.

I spent a fair amount of time writing up the OP, purely as a trollish humor thing, with the intent of mockery. A response like that is so beautifully in the spirit of things it makes me want to giggle just a bit.

I actually wondered the same thing, since he registered today. If so, registering to white-knight on behalf of someone being a trolly getting a beautifully trolly response would actually creep me out slightly more than a well done response like JoeDaddy's.

Hate post? I think you're confused....? I mean, I guess I was kind of hateful the way I responded to my friend (if thats what you meant). If you're talking about the OP, I don't hate him. I don't even know the guy outside of TL. IMHO, he's one of the better posters here, so if anything, I like the OP.

@Jingle:

Not sure we're on the same page here friend. This wasn't a counter-troll. It really happened. His name is James. We worked together at a company called Jostens (before he knocked his girlfriend up and married her).

You sir, suffer with a case of thin skin of your own, and respond to it by launching a massive preemptive assault upon everyone you encounter, in hopes that you will batter them into submission before they get a chance to get something past your own, even thinner, skin. What you got jingley?

If this is really the case, read my blog post "Gaming and the Stay at Home Dad", or maybe "Crohn's, Life". The ones where I talk about being a Stay At Home because I'm medically retired from the Army, with Crohn's disease (Nasty pre-existing condition, getting a job could cost me my free insurance from being medically retired, and it leaves you scrawny.)

That said, that kind of situation might require actual abilities with tact, which, if you missed the OP, I tend to throw out the window.

Thus, if you were being serious, it came off like an amazingly well played counter-troll.

lolololol. What are the chances?

Sorry for your hardship, my mother-in-law has Crohn's disease (diagnosed just a couple of weeks ago), and I spent 6 years in the Air Force myself.

Speaking of irony and all. Uhm, but in all seriousness, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with being a stay-at-home dad. Assuming the wife has equal or superior earning power, if that's there situation, unless they need the income (and it would offset the potential increased expenses if they both worked) it's not such a terrible thing.

Also, depending on their situation regarding location and similar things, taking the kid outside to play all the time isn't automatically a good thing. Sure, they need exercise, and my kid gets enough, but outside all day isn't something they "need" either.

Now, if his lack of work is causing financial or marital problems, or if the child is getting too little exercise/socialization, or is genuinely or borderline being neglected, then you were absolutely in the right and he was just being thin skinned.

That sort of situation is incredibly complex.

I often use swearing while talking IRL, i know some people who bitch at every swear word said like 'Please don't say this' and 5 min later when i swear again 'Please don't say that'. They try to bitch as much as they can about swearing. What kind of people are these?

Join the club of people who missed the joke and feel the need to deflect mean comments with sarcasm. There's a breakdown of those types of thin skin somewhere around here.

Ah, and you, it seems, are thin-skinned about poor grammar, we call the likes you a "grammar nazi", and the correct means of dealing with such and showing "sensitivity" is to make sure you use create lots of chances to be a grammar nazi, since they get some bizarre visceral pleasure out of showing their innate superiority regarding the written and spoken word; always make sure they get lots of chances to show off how much of a special little snowflake they are and they'll basically ignore whatever else goes on, it's very useful.

Oh oh, do me! Do me!

You need to seem less eager, you're clearly thin-skinned about being left out of the big joke. You're an annoying little crybaby twat about not getting in on the joke. For you, we make sure we bring you special ones, like "Why did the whiny bitch cross the blog section?"

*Offhand comment about your mother*

Please evaluate my life! :D

Wanting to be part of the joke. So, since I've psychoanalyzed that type already (I need to go through soon and add these to the OP, I think), you can just borrow that joke. Unless you're thin skinned about individual attention, at which point proper sensitivity is to photoshop your head onto a playboy bunny. Unfortunately, that's bannable here, so get off your ass and do your own work.

Need to deflect mean comments? So, before I posted, those comments were directed at me? I'm special?!?!
