(sorry for my english. Im from germany. I re-read my article and used online dictionary many times to do my best)
Hello,
everytime i see charity events i am in a conflict:
A: It generates money for social projects B: People only spend because of the event (or even only because people do something when they spend)
Often i come to the conclussion "okay better then nothing".
But "charity events" like this "HuskyStarcraft and friends" Stream makes me cry. In my opinion its only a show with much promotion for the stream(er) with the little side-effect people spend some money.
EVEN THOUGH HuskyStarcraft and his friends are REALLY AND 100% doing this because of the charity...the product what we are seeing when we watch the stream is a show with much promotion for the stream(er) with the little side-effect people spend some money.
The point that you see people just hanging around and having fun (even just playing videogames right at the moment when the vod runs in my background) makes it so much decadent and cynical (not respectable).
With this topic i want to make young/unknowing people sensitive that these events are mostly only to buy indulgence for our healthy livingstyle.
What do instead?
My suggestions (im not that super intelligent guy):
- Instead of watching such "charity events" use the time and do unpaid social work (or just go out and help other people/family/friends/go to a nursing home and just talk to lonely old people. (this special example because i worked for some time in a nursing home. You can just go there and ask someone from the staff you like to do some social work) - Just spend money (without supporting already rich/healthy people/companies) - Instead of following what HuskyStarcraft says all the time ("Twitter [insert some famous SC2 persons] because he deserves it and is doing a lot good work") find/search social worker who are NOT eccentric and/or self-centered who are realy doing there work 100% for the aim and tweet them!
If you are not well versed in charity/social work... maybe you have never done charity before (maybe because you are very young or just never thought about it before)... and you are supporting the HuskyStarcraft and friends event right now just keep doing. In the end it helps. I just want to let you know there are much better and more worth ways to do or/and help charity in future (do not charity because of an event: just do it! Or if you have time and the ability do social work by yourself!)
If i am totally wrong with the HuskyStarcraft Event (yes i don't watched it for hours (im watching the already up twitch.tv-vod and clicked through it) i am sorry. And anyway like i said: its nothing bad but you can do better!
Again i hope my english is not so bad. I really need to get it of my chest.

See, I agree that people should just be better people, but they aren't... People require (for some reason) some event to throw there cash at, they can't just go outside and help someone or give to the poor. So did this give Husky more spotlight? Yes, but is it bad? No, because nothing else is being done. I mean look at athene, he raised 1million through sharecraft, I had no idea who he was until he blew up in fame because of his idea.
I don't really know what to say tbh though, I'm kind of ranting, yes it's bad people are only giving because of an "event" and the event holders are profiting from being noticed, but if they didn't do this, who would spend money to help others?
|
Agreed 100%; good post. It should probably be in blogs, though.
|
With things like the charity streams people get entertainment and the good feeling of paying for charity aswell as a feeling of community. With just donating to charity ... sure you get the good feeling. But you dont get the entertainment or the community feeling.
Then add to that, i'd say a good portion of people don't just wake up and say "hey im going to do something charitable today". However if you see "hey this guy i like is doing something for charity i should support that". Giving people a reason to be charitable works so much better then just relying on an individuals good nature.
*Edit: This is also why in the UK we have Comic relief and Sport relief. Im sure various other countries have big TV fundraisers for charity too.
Also that husky marathon was halarious and a whole lot of fun

In my opinion it's not only "better then nothing", it's a good thing and many people don't care or simple don't know how they can help out or they choose not to..
Every charity helps, even if it only reaches one person it's still good and yes "better then nothing"
Why do you feel the need to tell "us" you don't feel this is not good enough? do you do better? how? where? when? how can the people in your area help you help others?
Do you thing soccer for charity, races for charity, any event for charity is wrong?
That's like saying Bill Gates shouldn't send 10 millions to that chartity because you have 10.000.000.000$...
Don't find you post relevant in any way..
Husky is not a rich guy, he might have more then some but we all have more then many since we have homes and pcs

I agree with what you wrote.
You should read my article again, please. I haven't said that i think that"charity streams/events" are bad. I pointed out several times that its ok to do so (and if its the only way to get money from the VERY rich guys then its even important). In the end i want to make people sensitive that they can do better, if they only spend money/do charity/social work when there is an event until now.

athene did not blow up in fame because of sharecraft. It was the GAIMZ

I disagree alot. Husky is not gaining many new fans by doing this AT ALL. You totally assume peoples' attitudes towards these events.. I think its these events are great! Be honest. If these guys DIDNT do these events, people would still go about their daily lives and give to charity on their own time whenever. If these guys DO, they encourage people to take a more active role and help sooner than later.
|
Most people, like Husky, who do charity events like this, are already efamous. They don't have to do charity events etc to get famous, they can just stream like usual and hog the money for themselves. Instead, the use their efame for a good cause.
I think it's awesome and your whole perspective on the issue is IMO twisted.

Because you shouldn't take to much comfort of something only because it has to do with charity.
Everything in the world should be running as efficient as it could. Why not trying to do charity as efficient as we could? Yes i am not a big example to be truth. But that doesn't make my words wrong.
And like i said to the other one: I haven't said that "it" is wrong or bad. (you for youself wrote that i am just talking about "doing it better" (but as i wrote before i would prefer the term "Make people sensitive for charity".)
And talking about Bill Gates and his money "is the same only in large".

option 1. they can sit on their butts and help the world
option 2. or they could get up and help the world
most people are lazy and will choose option 1.

This is always one of those questions. Why run for charity when you can do charity... for charity? We will sponsor a guy 5 dollars for every mile he runs but wont sponsor him 5 dollars for every hour he works for Habitat for Humanity. We could always be doing more, the motivation is the hard part.
|
I don't think that people are understanding the OP. He's saying that while events such as the one Husky's doing indeed do good, they tend to focus on the event itself rather than the charity, and that if you want to support a charity then you should help in more meaningful ways (namely by donating your time and researching charitable works in general). Phrasing things my own way now, people act like viewing Husky's stream is their godsend, and their pretention can get annoying.
|
What would you like more, a guy of Huskys size building a house for free, or a paid 6" 200lb professional builder building a home? The way I see it, is that Husky and his friends, are doing what they do best for charity. They are not professional workers, doctors etc., but they can entertain people, that is what they are good at. I think they can generate alot more good doing charity streams and entertain people, then going out themselves and doing "normal" charity work.

So you are saying this events are not good enough but you actully don't do anything yourself? That's really bad, oh and btw i also don't do much, I've done stuff but nothing that's all that representative..
Dude it seems like you are a nice person but you also don't seem to live in this world.. we are humans and we suck.. we are a virus that consumes everything and even each other.. Our planet, other animals and us are at risk and all we know is to eat good, have nice things and money.. most people don't even want to be happy.. They just want more stuff..
We live in a society where we (western countrys) eat and waste allot when people die of starvation all over the world.. We produce more then people can buy and we destroy everything in this planet for that..
Are the online charitys or even any charity bad? NO.. could they do more? YES.. Could we be better persons? YES!
I guess this topic is a bit pointless.. that's it!

Let me Quote myself to answer this:

Again: I don't want to say any charity event is bad. Some have a bad flavour/you could support better projects.
I hope i have made my intention more clear now. I have to go to bed now.

I tend to agree, when I was a teen our youthgroup was doing a "walk-a-thon" type of thing and when I asked my mom if she'd donate she sugested that next time we do some sort of good while we're fundraising, like a town clean-up or volunteer at the long-term care home. THis is so smart. Look, we all love watching funny/fun fundraisers (battle in the bronze etc.) but if some of these personalities were to volunteer their time during a fundraiser event that'd be pretty cool.
option 1. they can sit on their butts and help the world
option 2. or they could get up and help the world
most people are lazy and will choose option 1. So in this case I would add the "option 3. or they could get up and help the world in an even MORE productive way!
So in closing, something is better than nothing, but sometimes more is better.

most people are lazy and will choose option 1. How is giving away money "sitting on your butt" though? I mean assuming you earned that money by hard work?
A relatively well paid person giving away a sizable portion of his salary to charity is probably doing more good than a full time charity worker.

I am having a hard time understanding what you are saying. What I am getting from what you are saying is that people shouldn't sit and donate to charity events but should do things themselves. The problem I'm having with that mindset is that in most cases, money is needed to fix the problems in the world. You are saying these people should give of their time rather than their wallet. I see a certain amount of hypocrisy because you tell them to do, but not to support those who actually are doing. Don't give them your money do it yourself. If everyone had that mindset you would have a world full of Doers who wouldn't actually get anything of worth done because nobody is supporting their endeavors. It's fine if you are a "doer" but the world needs all sorts of people in order to function. Some people give in the only way they have time, money, support, whatever.

Most pick option 3.
