-FINISHED PRODUCT-

-MAKING OF-

All started couple of years ago when my girlfriend bought me a Lego truck as a christmas present. I believe it was mean't to be slightly a joke but building the truck got me hooked. Exactly how Lego's worked in childhood. I realized now not being a child I could overcome the part limitation and purchase pretty much any amount of pieces. Soon enough I had over 10000 part selection and a building goal set: working large scale Siege Tank. Might be strange that soon 30 years old man builds with Legos but I find it really relaxing and rewarding.

Building process starts from the inner frame of the tank. It has to be able to lift itself + outer shell of tank. Here's first fully mechanical version which was too weak. A lot of gears slipping and rattling
[image loading]

After many prototypes I ended up with mostly pneumatic solution. It's rather slow in action but it's able to lift the heavy tank.

Slowly covering the mechanical hull with smooth surfaces it starts to look better:

Hard time fitting 3 motors inside smallish cannon tower:

I'm happy how the end result looks. Transformation into siege mode is really slow so there is room for improvement and better skill.

-sample of structure

Some specifications of the finished tank:

-6 channel ir remote
-siege / driving mode
-fully working cannon with 2 rounds
-drive forward / backward
-roughly 5000 parts
-4-5kg weight

That's fucking INSANE! How do you build something so complex out of legos? Anything I build ends up looking like shit.

I put four blocks together and call it a masterpiece lol.

Wow. Just...wow.

This is so cool. Thats why I like lego. Although unfortunately I don´t have any myself anymore I always really like seeing these sort of things. Makes me wonder what could have been if I had kept my collection and kept expanding it.

Ah well. At least some other kid got to enjoy my legos and experience that awsome feeling I had for all those years.

Awh man I'm soo jelly.

A while back I had a K'nex Rock Crawler (which I made from a Ferris wheel set(flex rods and the motor) and a variety tub). Everything was made out of K'nex execpt I had rubber bands as driveshafts and as beadlocks (I had a lot of trouble when my sipped large tires kept spinning on the wheels). It was only back and forth at a painfully slow speed and the motor had a slip thing (I guess to keep from breaking rods) so going up steep hauls you couldn't do. It flexed like crazy, to the point where the rubber bands would slip off the small wheels on the axle's. Oh this one time I was watching it crawl over a rock and the back axle snapped, took me like 5 minutes to pick up all the spacers.

Then one day I thought it would be pro to watch it do a Tank Trap. After that the motor died a week later. =[

I can't believe Lego Technic actually supplies so unique peices that you can make something which looks THAT much like a seige tank... and not only that, you can make it look like that while it actually has functionality? That's ridiculous. How much did you spend on all that lego?

I'm guessing 600-1000.

A lot of times people do things and show them off on this forum and I think, "Cool, but I could do that."

But this, I wouldn't even know where or how to start to build a functioning lego siege tank. It just seems... too hard.

Good job.

Thank you all! Video is in the making. Part cost for this project was around 600-700 euros. Building technique for the outer shell is quite simple. It consists in fact 90% of very common technic beams. Only some highlight parts are rarer to add extra shape. Here's an image where I tried to show how the smooth surfaces are made:

The key is that you have to shift weight over the leg and then take the weight off the other leg.

It becomes harder with the balance when Thor has weapons and arms that should be movable aswell Would be nice to have possibility to aim weapons.

Wow... possibly the best Lego MOC I've ever seen - even if it didn't have all of its functionality, it would still easily be one of the most accurate Lego Starcraft adaptations there has been. I have a couple custom Lego (technic/bionicle based) Starcraft models I made 2-3 years ago that I've considered posting, but I might as well not even bother since pretty much anything will look like complete crap compared to this.

Only 101 votes for the Banshee? I just clocked in # 102 vote. Best of luck! Both are awesome. Taistelee!

Go vote and put down "teamliquidl.net" when they ask you why you chose the Banshee, who knows maybe teamliquid gets a advertising deal if enough go vote. So go help out you community and drakmin! (registration at the lego site is screenname, email, age, password, and why you voted, took me 30 secs tops, unless you vote with facebooksign in, which I didn't, then its less than 10 secs)

Wow, I didn't know there are Lego parts like that. When I played it's just the squarish and I guess slightly angled blocks there haha. Looking forward to the Banshee.

Anyway, here's a repeating version of the 7-sec siege mode video just for the heck of it: + Show Spoiler +

holy crap.
I got a truck set and that NXT 2.0 set but never really got around to making things . I should really allocate some time for that.

Love both the banshee and the tank.

This is absolutely amazing stuff.

But everytime I see those "new" kinds of lego I can't help to feel sad a little because lego used to be a huge part of my childhood and It's really changed a lot since then.

Yeah....this is legitimate engineering :O

Every time I see this again my jaw drops...what the heck, just way too good. Amazing creation there...hope he's able to produce some more epic SC2 units if he has some extra time on his hands~

I'm not sure if I actually posted here to say how brilliant this is. Well, this is brilliant

Also, I really liked this part for some reason : "All started couple of years ago when my girlfriend bought me a Lego truck as a christmas present. I believe it was mean't to be slightly a joke but building the truck got me hooked. Exactly how Lego's worked in childhood. I realized now not being a child I could overcome the part limitation and purchase pretty much any amount of pieces."

Naruto had it right, intuitive engineering in all its glory, very well done sir. Hopefully Lego picks the design up, you could have a self-made career doing stuff like that.

The Odin would be another interesting terran mech unit that might transfer as well to the Lego Technic side of things. Well done on the tank though.
