My Flash number is 3 as a result of the pounding inflicted on me by iNcontroL. Edit: Upon further examination of the rules it appears my Flash number is 4 because I've beaten a friend of mine who beat iNcontroL.

On June 30 2012 10:22 Renner wrote:My Flash number is 3 as a result of the pounding inflicted on me by iNcontroL. I think the OP is saying that you need to BEAT that person to get your FlaSh number. If you didn't beat iNcontroL, it doesn't give you the number.
Unless I'm just not understand this correctly.

At most a 3. maybe a 2.
edit: after seeing the rules better my Flash number is definitely a 3.
|
3, beat incontrol on ladder once lolz

I beat incontrol in a clanmatch in broodwar so my flash number is 3! whoah that's fucking insane!!! does it count that he offraced and i don't think he was that serious about it since i was a c rank newbie? was a bo3 though ^_^ essentially this means anyone who ever beat incontrol has a flash number of 3 though, which should be quite a lot.

Probably a 4, beat someone who claimed to beat incontrol
funny how every example has incontrol

Featured? I'm lost. Since when and why would JD ever practice with iNcontroL?

What if you beat the person in SC2? What about Chess? Foot race? Pie-eating contest?
In each of those respectively, my Flash number is 93, 87, 72, and 1.

either 3 or 4 i would guess, without involving incontrol

I imagine mine would be either infinite or nonexistant. I never did get above D+ on iccup, so I doubt I ever beat anybody who ever beat anybody who ever beat anybody (...) who beat Flash.

I'm going to guess 5 or at most 6. The thing about the way the Flash number is being defined is that if you've beaten someone even just once, that counts as a connection.
|
Did Incontrol really beat Jaedong once? I know zvz is volatile but that's a pretty impressive accomplishment, everyone knows mondi once beat sea, why haven't I heard this? p.s. anyone who's beaten desrow has a FlaSh number of two not that its nearly as impressive

I think mine is something like pi to the square root of negative infinity or some such. Because me beating Flash or anyone who beat him is either imaginary or irrational. Maybe both.

I've beaten lil-Inferno at the StarEdit.Net Duke Nukem Melee tournament; he's beaten CecilSunkure at the StarEdit.Net fortnight frenzy mapping contest; CecilSunkure has beaten Sterling at Gameclucks LAN Seattle in SCII; Sterling has beaten KawaiiRice at the same LAN; KawaiiRice has beaten AriA at SCII on ladder; AriA has beaten Motive; Motive beat EffOrt at SCII; and EffOrt has beaten FlaSh at SCII.
That gives me a FlaSh number of 8, admittedly via some SCII, and some BW, AND a BW mapping contest.
|
hmm i think nOoNe beat incontrol atleast once. i beat nOoNe once. ONCE out of our many 2000000000000000 games. so mine would be 4

For me the first person who comes to mind is intrigue who I beat in pvt; he beat incontrol on the first tl attack playing as uncontrollable iirc (tvz). Incontrol beat jd who was in JFK with Kevin Bacon.
edit: I also beat Suppy in bw in his early days iirc, and definitely in Go.
Only notable win other than that I can think of (if it counts) is ToT Strafe but I don't know who he beat in old-school days.

Yeah I don't anticipate anyone being over 6 (assuming you've at least tried to play BW). You might not consciously recognize it, but the optimal connection pathway probably exists.
Anyway, I'm probably a 3 or a 4.

I'm a 5, and I'm only in platinum!
My friend is in masters league, and has beaten people who have beaten incontrol, and I've taken games off him.

I beat a retired player from skt1 person at sc2.
He beat Haran according to TLPD..
Haran has beaten LighT.
LighT has beaten Flash.
I am sure since he was on skt1 though he has beat other skt1 players.. so could be shorter path there lol.

Heh. If SC2 counts flash number 1. found out it was him only way after because someone leaked his account name and it looked familiar. if sc2 doesn't count flash number probably 5-6 as a D BW player.
Consequently if sc2 counts this makes the following western gamers have a flash number of 2 at most:
Catz Incontrol IdrA Nony TLO Huk QXC
probably a couple others, given that I used to play quite a lot of ladder and only had a 60% winrate. Lol that one random encounter on the korean ladder w/ flashes account back when he first started sc2 is a huge gateway flash number link for alot of players now.
|
I have beaten losingid8 at racewar, who has beaten Rekrul at 3v3/racewar type games, who has beaten Dongrae who has beaten boxer who has beaten flash.
That puts me at 5, but it is almost certainly 4 because there has a one link route from rekrul to flash through boxer or anytime or yellow or someone.
|
This reminds me of a theory I ran across in a psych class - nearly everyone in the world is separated from any other person by at most 6 degrees of separation (across all acquaintances, of course, not just winning games of SC!!!)

Hello.
I'm in, cough, Silver league at the moment. I claim a Flash number of 4!
Flash -> Jaedong -> Incontrol is established by the OP
From the TLPD, Incontrol -> AdelScott. (EG Masters Cup VII, bo3).
And just last night, I beat AdelScott. Okay, it wasn't a tournament game, or even 1v1 ladder, it was an FFA. And AdelScott was offracing as Terran. And he had the worst spot on the map (flanked by two other players) and I had the best. And it was Friday night, so he was probably drunk. I should probably have been, but I wasn't.
But fuckit, I'm in Silver League, I'm not picky. I take all the glory I can!
So can any bronze leaguers Maguyver a Flash number less than 4?

The whole point of the Erdos number is that it wasn't hard to publish with Erdos; he had over 500 coauthors. So Flash number is kind of backwards... we need a progamer who is renowned for losing.

Wow, then that makes me a 5 Pholon because of that one time on Twin Blood Bath - it was a very competitive Dark Archon match, and I beat you before the other side of the map attacked.
Seeing as Flash is such a prolific player, to make it more exclusive I think we should also consider what our respective Tossgirl and Hyung-Joon numbers are!

At first I thought my Flash number is a 4. But it turns out it is a 2.
Edit: probably a lot of people have a better Flash number than they think. It's not like JD is the only person to have beaten Flash and it's not like incontrol is the only person to have beaten JD. It might get a little harder if we only count the time since Flash went on his massive win streak (starting late 2009), but even then probably not as bad as people are thinking.

It might get a little harder if we only count the time since Flash went on his massive win streak (starting late 2009), but even then probably not as bad as people are thinking.
You could also have a good Flash number in more recent games. A lot of Koreans do play in small daily EU/NA tournaments and play EU/NA ladder before that to get used to the latency. And those players probably also beat Flash in the Korean ladder. I think a lot of EU/NA grand master or high master players have a Flash number of 2.

I beat whitera once in sc2, anyone knows what number does that give me?

Don't know why people are counting SC2 wins. Different game is different game.

My Flash number is 4.
nGenMafia beat Incontrol on the ladder once, and I've beaten him long ago. (assuming OP information is accurate)

OP doesn't mention any game, just beating Flash eventually.
SC2 is perfectly legitimate.
Mine is probably 5.

My BW Flash number is smaller than my SC2 Flash number ^^

Eventually, the concept of the "Erdős number" arose. Paul Erdős has an Erdős number of zero. Anyone who collaborated with Erdős has an Erdős number of 1. Anyone who collaborated with someone who collaborated with Erdős has an Erdős number of 2. And so on. We can transfer this concept to the world of Starcraft by thinking about the people who have beaten Flash. Flash has a Flash number of zero. Jaedong has a Flash number of 1. ( link) iNcontroL has a Flash number of 2 (he beat Jaedong in a practice match at one point if I recall correctly) Superiorwolf has a Flash number of 3. What is your Flash number?
Cool idea, but keep in mind that the Erdős number comes from an academic publication-- not "any old" thing that you coauthored with someone (the MathSciNet collaboration distance calculator uses publications indexed by MathSciNet). So most people don't even have a number. But once you publish in a math journal, you probably now have a Erdős number since it's unlikely that all of your co-authors didn't already have one.
The SC parallel would be beating someone in a formal tournament, not just on ladder or in practice. Not everyone has been in a money tournament, but once you have gotten a few wins you're pretty likely to have established your Flash number.
Perhaps the TLPD can have a Flash number calculator added?

I've beat Incontrol at Team Micro Arena in BW =P.

I beat Flash every day that I use HTML5 or Silverlight. Actually, I guess that means Steve Jobs has a Flash Number of 1.
Safely, I have a Flash Number of 3. I imagine I might have a 2 though, because I've beaten a few Koreans at least once who might have beaten Flash, and then you also never know who has beaten him in SC2. So, conservatively 3, hoping for 2 o.o

Shouldn't the max number be 6? Since technically we are all 6 degrees apart?
I am probably at 6 LOL (:'( forever alone down here.

Which raises yet another quibble: would that put Huk at Flash number 3 after beating IdrA in SC2?

I was of course presuming that SC2 wins would count.

Is Flash even top 100 in the world in SC2? I doubt it. He might not even be top 500. That makes the whole premise kind of a joke, really. :/

I beat my friend Incursion who beat vileHawk who has beaten someone else at MLG (can't remember their name) who has most likely beat inc
:D

Probably a 4. I can't be sure.
Use to be a High-Masters/Mid-Gm player.
Bound to have beat someone who beat Incontrol.

People are taking this the wrong way. Its not (I've beaten incontrol in sc2, so i have a number of 2). That doesn't count. In order to have an erdos number, one has to write a mathematical paper, I think it has to do with beating someone in BW.
No one claims to have an erdos number who has just written a book, nothing to do with math, but still involves writing. It HAS to be a mathematical paper, as I think this should HAVE to do with BW, regardless of wither flash plays sc2 or not.
(this of it this way. Gaming is the general field, just like writing. Math is the specific thing that give you a number, like the specific game would be.)
The number is in relation to his utter dominance in BW, as it was with Erdos and his prolific writing of mathematical papers.
Also, one should consider the possibility of WHEN incontrol beat jaedong (anyone know about when this happened?) Was it after jaedong beat flash? or before. Because if It was before, doesn't that mean incontrol doesn't have a flash number?

Its all meant as a joke, Incontrol beat both flash and jaedong (so he should be number 1 not 2) on ladder when they were still rookies. Also because requirements are low (bw or sc2 does not matter) the probability of someone on this forum having flash number will be relatively high. If we made a strict rules almost no one would have flash number here.

When did Inc beat Flash?

I beat someone named incontrol on the ladder, but he was platinum. Does that still count?

this is such a awesome thread that i can't even imagine what my flash number is. the level of awesomeness is beyond my imagination. (I wont say its over 9000 ! )

My number is two, because I beat desrow on ladder.
|
Flash number of 2. I beat desrow (:
|
If this is only BW then I have a flash number of 3. If you count SC2 then I have a flash number of 1.

Do custom games count? If so, 4.

Mine is probably a 3, depends if Midian/Mondie/Testie have ever beaten Flash back when he was a nublet. Midian used to play with a lot of koreans but probably not I guess.

OMG. This means I have a real Flash number. Thank you. I once lost a game of Dota with Babyknight. I have beat one of the enemies, Tower.Of.Chaos, before(one of my buddies). Babyknight beat Catz.
Catz has 2, Babyknight 3, Tower has 4 and I got 5. I so do not deserve this number^^

I met JD on the KR ladder on his first-ish week of playing and won.
Am I cool, now?
