well i have time to kill as proleague starts in 8 minutes........so i just wanted to get this off my chest:
I was watching MLG and at the end of the night the last match JP was casting, the 'player' was winning 1-0 and he said he 'hopes the next match will be the last' and goes on ranting about how they have been casting all day, and continually said he hopes it is the last game. FML do you know how many people would love to be in your position, and you dont even want to do you job!!
I watched games after that casted by day 9 and wheat that went on for much later.....not a single complaint!
So i am just saying, i hate it when casters complain about being in that position of having to cast 'too many games' and casting for 12 hours straight........ I would do it for more and for free as well! and im sure many others would too.
It would be such a blessing to be casting there, it only lasts 3 days. Please JP, dont complain

|
Yeah that bugged me quite a bit as well. Can't really justify bitching about your job in that kind a situation. >_>
|
why don't you make a blog about ...... oh wait.
|
Eh, i personally don't mind so much but it is generally frowned upon. I remember this happening to a much worse extent early on in sc2 and its not worth the shit you get to complain about being in that position.
Love jp though, i dont mind at all but i think he'll end up getting some shit.
|
Shouldn't complain on air but you have no idea how hard it is to cast that much in one day. Also the later it goes the less your mind is working 100% right, at a certain point you tend to hit auto-pilot. It's a pretty forgivable mistake.
|
also jp isnt just magically in his position he busts his ass to be able to do what hes doing and if that comes off in a little bit of complaining so be it.
|
I respect JP for the effort he puts in, but man he gets on my last nerve. I just can't stomach him at all and I realize I'm probably alone in that. His faux laugh and flat personality just kill me. I really wish he would just stick to behind the scenes stuff. Even on SotG (his own show lol), he's the person I like least. He just has the personality of an oven mitt. I do sincerely respect all he does for "eSports" but I'd much prefer if he were just a tournament organizer or something.
Not that my opinion matters on the subject! But it is a blog post, after all.

Didn't see this happen but you sure it wasn't just in a joking manner? People just say stuff without meaning it all the time on cast. And the guy is in the position he's in because he worked hard for it... for years and years in esports. Shouldn't call people out for not loving their job if they've actually spent the effort and time to get there.

you're not alone. JP has no game knowledge whatsoever to be casting (shouldn't be casting in the first place). he's only casting because he works for MLG and for the publicity. ever see another organization reach out to hire him? yeah, there's a reason. i would even take totalbiscuit over him, at least he tries to make it interesting
|
I don't think you understand how exhausting working at mlg all day can be, specifically when your on camera. Also you say JP does it again, sources? I don't recall him saying that, and you can guarantee he's going to be tired, it'll be a relief for him to go to bed tonight.
|
Casters are literally there for 20 out of the 24 hours there are in a day, they are lucky if they even get 4 hours of sleep MAX
Don't be so quick to judge
|
im not sure why JP is in this business. he just doesnt seem all that interested in it when you hear his voice, on his face, and the things he says. I thought he might be depressed or something from the flat, blunted tone of his voice.

JP is a masters player . I'm pretty sure the likes of rotterdam / mr bitter also started casting when they were in masters. Give the man some slack on the game knowledge side , his isn't JUST a caster . He hosts sotg and does other stuff for mlg i presume.
|
I used to volunteer and work for a few organizations that ran quite a few tournaments back in the day. Whether it was volunteer or paid, there were many 12-20 hour days involving a ton of different types of work. However, I never complained and find it hard to believe that I'd ever complain about something I love doing. Maybe he doesn't love what he does and that's unfortunate.
|
I casted from 10AM to like 8-9PM at LANETS twice (Sat and Sunday).
I thought I'd hate it and struggle, but it was amazing whether I was solo-casting or dual-casting, I wish I could do it all the time ):
JP isn't typically a caster, he likes more behind-the-scenes tasks, but he did sound depressed this whole time.

Personally I find JP's casting intolerable, and if he's complaining about then maybe he should stick to hosting shows and whatnot. I think I would prefer clutch casting and JP doing clutches job tbh.
|
He was random masters I believe.. not sure if he's still playing.
|
I heard he was masters as well.
I've never cared for him as a caster. He fits better in other roles like SoTG host, in between matches announcer/interviewer, etc.
|
JP is such an exciting caster, I can't blame him if he feels tired with all that passion he injects into his work.
|
Sauce on him being masters.
I heard/I believe just aren't good enough.
I ask because the way he casts makes my fingers turn off streams. I would have guessed he was diamond, max.
|
No you wouldn't. Everyone that says "I would kill for that position!" is an idiot. If you don't work towards getting that position you don't want it badly enough. JP has consistently worked on his casting and is doing a good job. He didn't get handed casting gigs, he worked for them. Casting for 12 hours straight is ridiculously straining on your voice, not to mention how talking for 12 hours can often lead to rambling and incoherent thoughts.
Tastosis, Day9, etc. have all complained about it in the past. JP is no different.
|
I hate JP as a caster, love him on SOTG and I'm sure he works hard, but seriously his casting is not that good, and fuck him for bitching about being able to cast top players all day at one of the worlds most prestigious LANs.
|
He is a bad caster, has really no fun personality, and has not a lot of game knowledge...
|
He probably lost his passion
|
So I went and found the VOD of this. The OP is way overstating... there was no 'rant' at all.

Tournaments seriously need to start rotating casters more. MLG usually does a good job at that though, but it's getting harder for them as they add more and more streams and content to be casted.

Jesus, people will bitch about anything. If you got blowjobs for a living, after a long day full of getting blowjobs, dollars to dimes you'd be wanting to go home by about 3/4 of the day. He's a person, man. People get tired. Deal with it.

Yeah I can confirm that JP is master level.
I agree that today wasn't JP's best day, but hell I've seen Day9 being much "worse" in the way of whining about being tired of commentating.
Also I don't know how you guys can be so harsh on JP and be fine with Djwheat. Wheat has this excited/exciting tone and a good talking/commentating voice, but the things he says, for the love of fuck, it's this consistent unidimensional flow of irrelevant or obvious stuff, or a rehash of what the other caster said. I find myself nearly freaking out at the amount of facepalm-worthy comments he throws around and I just want him to hear me think "YOU DON'T SAY?!". Sometimes I just wish Day9 would pause the game in the middle of MLG and tell him "No, you are wrong, and let me tell you why." I hope some of this happens between the games at least.
Pure analysis is boring, so there's always some place for the good old shoutcasting, but come on. Wheat tells me what's on screen and spices it up with shallow first-degree analysis that makes very little sense most of the time. JP, who's average but tolerable to me, at least has something to add to the game.
|
I don't usually hop onto hate bandwagons, but JP and Rob simpson are probably the worst casting pair at this MLG, period.
Between JP's lack of enthusiasm and Rob's complete lack of game knowledge, I can hardly find redeeming qualities there.
I mean, they would be decent for some mid-level tournies like playhem or whatnot, but if MLG wants to develop SC2 into a billion-dollar industry, I'm sure they can do some better talent finding than those. I'm sure they are great at other things, but casting...meh.
|
If I had to spend a whole day with Rob Simpson, I'd be really bitchy too.
I don't mind JP, granted he is not the most enthusiastic caster in the world, but he knows a ton about the scene and the players. I also do like that he usually keeps a very professional demeanor. Why Rob is casting is completely beyond me. He knows nothing about the scene or the players and clearly has little to no knowledge of the game. But honestly what gets me the most is that he clearly thinks he's hilarious--that's the one thing I really really can't stand about him.
For goodness sake, bring in someone like Husky or Cat's pajamas; people who've actually contributed to the community and have a solid knowledge of it and the game.

I disagree greatly.
I feel JP Mcdaniels is the worst caster in the SC2 scene. Best Host? Sure. Organizer? Sure.
Casting he's so bland. One tone of voice. I keep here "OH NO SEAN, LOOK OUT SEAN, OHHHH" When he casted with Day 9 he sucked and ruined it. I enjoy watching those B-level guys on the beta MLG streams over him. JP is kind of like orb, when I hear them I hear them "trying" to cast. Not just doing it naturally.
This is like my 5th post about this topic and me not liking him so I'll give it up, there's still worse people than him. However I just don't see it.
|
Hey, I've heard much worse from much higher profile casters before. Dreamhack Winter 2011 was rife with this sort of stuff both in game and in/between from Day9, Apollo, Bitter, and TB. Sometimes it's not a question of 'manner' in casters, it's more a question of how hard they have to work regardless of their actual casting chops. Perhaps MLG should cycle out casters for more breaks, especially when they are tired.
|

Mmm, yea, we have a lot of terrible casters. A lot of people bringing up the argument that "He worked hard for his casting position." A much truer statement is "He worked hard to be in a position where he could be a caster, if a game with such a position was created/needed." The exact argument applies to DJ Wheat, TB, ect.
The reason why these sub-par casters will re-main in their debatable "earned" positions, is because, frankly, we don't seem to have a large supply of anyone who isn't a socially awkward mess, who can coherently form and communicate ideas fluently, who also has great game knowledge step into the spotlight. I'm pretty sure JP and company aren't too upset about this.
The most popular casters are always ones that people can relate with, or at least ones who you can listen to just enough where you don't have to mute your stream because their banter is so much more (negatively) distracting than the game. Even if these kind of people don't know very much about their game, as long as they can get a few things right and keep you entertained during downtime, people don't care. Hotbid's ESPORTS poll epitomizes, self evidently, the sad truth of what mainstream cares about most. If you can find a person like Day9 who can do all these things well, then, your probably going to be really venerated like Day9. However, I think most people would really prioritize "Tolerable" casters over "Amazing" casters where we stand right now. I am in the same boat as many, I could really do less without Robs awkwardness, multiplied by JP's irritated/humoring/akward dispositions to said awkwardnesses, during my games. Sadly, who's going to do it?
Also, small rant - People should really just stfu about casting being so hard. If you've ever worked as a telemarketer, debt collector, or anything that involved you talking all fucking day, often times for 12 hours straight, talking personally to people that go from really disliking you to outright wanting you dead, you would understand that talking all day about selling a loveable game you like is a fuck of a lot better. I've done both, and I would do it in a heartbeat, if I didn't have other aspirations that seemed more likely to pan out.
|
JP was (maybe is) a Masters Zerg at one point in time, when I popped into his stream.
Also this is just a really terrible thread full of hatred.
Even for people who love their work there will be days where they hate it. Maybe this is just one of these days for JP. It sucks he lost his composure for a bit but all this shit talking is ridiculous.

I remember when JP used to solo cast dozens of games before an MLG just to improve his casting. Lost passion for esports etc etc.
On a more serious note, it does seem like more casters and non-players in general in the industry (words can't describe how much I hate calling it an "industry") that have been around for a while are suffering from the same "syndrome". You can have any dream job you can imagine and after a year or two many things that used to be exciting and you felt like you could do it day-and-night for free will feel like chores you have to drone through in order to get the paycheck. It's the most normal thing in the world and I can't think of many people who are immune to it.
Watch Sean's dailies from BW or even SC2 beta, and watch his dailies today. It's a universe of difference in terms approach, commitment, treatment of the audience etc. Now it seems like a half-scripted Starcraft-themed comedy show that contains more catchphrases than it does actual content. Likewise for State of the Game, and everything else really.
Honestly, there's a lot of work in "esports" that I feel should be done by volunteers and is in fact usually much better done by volunteers than by paid personnel, especially those employed for a long time. Things like casting, journalism, artwork/graphics, and many others come to mind. I know this is an unpopular view because of the "growth of esports as an industry", as well as people wanting to make money on something they started doing as a hobby, but it is what it is. Some things are just done better as a hobby - maybe not in terms of productivity and superficial production quality, but definitely in terms of content quality.

Hate when jp is casting ... that's my personal opinion. But we need to thank god about the mute button :D
|
I have no clue why people are saying stuff like "You have no clue how exhausting it is to cast all day".. no? especially when there's actually so many casters at this event as well, plenty of rest-time - Co-casting is far from straining in any capacity what-so-ever. Solo-casting can be tiring sure, but seriously co-casting is extremely easy since you actually get chance for breaks and the ability to breathe.
I'm of the opinion that anyone who claims this is difficult/taxing is being a sissy :D but ofc JP in this situation might have other things to do during the event other than casting since he's an MLG employee? i'm not sure.
|
IMO if you are going to call someone out like that you better have a really good reason, and you don't Mr OP. We don't know what JP does all day and how long a day he has had. In general ppl in E-Sports like casters to be themselves and not have to put on a front all the time, so if JP wants to say he is tired then he can do that. ppl that just sit on the side complaining about others who are being proactive and putting themselves out there, really are pathetic.
|
It's probably that he doesn't know what to talk about, so he talks about being tired. Filling time is hard, I sympathize with JP. Still, you have a point, he should be talking about other stuff.

As I did cast myself 6-10 hours some tournaments, obviously with a co-caster, sometimes solo I know its "exhausting" or at least tiring to cast, but even so, everyone should know. There is no reason for a professional to go ahead and whine about how tiring it is.
I can completely understand all the complaints about JP =.=!

His casting isn't good and his whining about how tiring it is, is pathetic. Isn't that good enough of a reason for you? He gets paid to do that and MLG wants to be professional. If JP casts well and after x-hours gets a bit worse or less passionate everyone will notice he's probably tired, but to be completely honest, whining on stream is unacceptable.
|
JP is an exceptional caster. The drone of his voice is a great balance to the enthusiasm of his co-casters. He has the uncanny ability to make the magical sound normal, and the normal sound non-existent. Not many casters are able to build such a unique rapport with the audience such that no emotions are required to translate his thoughts. His level of expressionism is of a different level altogether.

tbh, i only enjoy Day9/DJWheat. Tastosis doesnt feel as exciting as they were before, and i simply dont like tasteless too much because he isnt that good of a caster imo. Im ok with both, Rob Simpson and JP, but they dont go well together. None of them is analytic enough.
|
I agree that casters shouldn't complain about how long the series is taking if it's 1-0 and say they want it to end. They can complain about being awake and casting all day though. I think it makes them human lol and gives something that both casters can relate to and talk about. The way he did it was really wrong though...
|
I respect JP, but he (in my opinion) shouldn't be a caster. He works his balls off, and it's not by chance he's gotten as far as he gotten. He's just not good as a caster. He's a great organizer, host, businessman, etc., but does not do well casting. He's bland, states the obvious, and makes mistakes. Though there are a lot of bad casters out there, I really don't think he should be casting something as huge as MLG. Get one of the beta casters up there, because they do a great job.
I think another part of the problem is the fact that they are pairing Rob and JP. JP doesn't really sound half as bad when he's with someone like Day9, or a more "lead" caster. But Rob's casting is comparable to JP's, and (even though I like Rob and think he's got a great voice and good articulation) those two together just sounds bad. There's no analysis, or attempts at it are bad. It's hard to appreciate higher level play, because they often make it seem more simple than it is. Split them up, please!
As far as JP complaining, I didn't hear it, but there's no place for that. You're getting paid to do a job, and you're representing MLG. Make a big attempt to sound excited and optimistic, because the people watching take what you say in. Yeah, you're probably exhausted, haven't slept much, and want it to be over, but don't let us know that. You got where you are by hard work- when you're tired, work that much harder and finish the day.
|
I respect JP a lot. I can't understand how you might say he "doesn't have game knowledge"... Dude has been around since beta and was a random masters league player (currently Z i believe) and is a pretty good caster and analyst. Being a caster myself I understand how tired can you be at the end of the day. I understand how frustrating can it be when the last match of the day is extending and you just want to go to bed. But there are things that can be said and others that you should keep to yourself and try to be professional. I believe this was one of them.

I'm actually really surprised by this. I guess most people just don't like the more dry/serious style of JP? For me knowledge of the scene and the game is far more important than style, and Rob really doesn't have any of those. Oh well.

Complaining a little is fine. Day9 used to do it a lot and it was fine as long as it's not excessive.
