HI TL's friends

I just read an article from IGN regarding future of console gaming here
http://games.ign.com/articles/122/1220883p1.html

Note that this is just one of many article that people talking about the downfall of the console gaming.
Many editor and many insider of gaming industry have been raising concern about the future of console. Some said mobile gaming and web browser gaming will be the future.
Now I don't know if that is true or not.. but as a hardcore gamer, I really wish it is not the case. I still miss the time of PS1 and PS2 where good game came out faster than you could have played them. In those time there are good RPG came out everyweek and you have to decide which game you are going to buy. Right now, with ps3, it is opposite of that. there are very few worthy game coming out.

What do you guys think? will console going down like arcade game? What if we have to play Final Fantasy XV in IPAD3. What if you can only play Tekken or Street Fighter from a PC. I hope we don't.

Have you watched the presentation by Ben Cousins which this article references? It's not so much consoles are dyign as they are being replaced by mobile gaming, just like the console killed the arcade, just like internet is killing the newspaper, just like television killed film. Sure, it will continue to exist, but it'll be a niche thing.

I honestly want game dev studios to stop producing high budget, blockbuster-or-we're-fucked games.

A ridiculous assertion. Console games are still selling millions. Casual/social/FTP games may be bigger than traditional gaming, but as far as I'm concerned they belong in a completely different category and do not even cater to the same demographic.

Nah consoles aren't dying. Unless I am mistaken the modern warfail series sells most of its copies on consoles (pc still do good but not as good as consoles iirc). I dont' think consoles will die anytime soon tbh but that's just me, I personally havent played a console in so long, it feels so wrong compared to pc gaming xD.

Consoles are at their weakest right now, as it always is before a release cycle, they look terrible in comparison to PC. Things will bounce back a ton once the new consoles come out.

I was the purest of the PC gaming master race, but I got a PS3 one day and I enjoy playing it more. All the titles feel a lot more natural in terms of control (probably a console port issue on PC), and you just plug in the disc and it works without the bullshit.

But I only use my PS3 for JPRGs and fighting games.

I think consoles will always have a place. Mobile and social gaming is huge, but that's not converting the market, that's expanding the market. Teenagers who play PS3 aren't stopping to go play Farmville, other people who don't play games are starting to play Farmville. And the mobile gaming boom is awesome, because even though 99% of titles are shit, there's some absolutely fantastic mobile gaming experiences out there.

Mobile gaming has no effect on consoles. Dumbass newspapers etc like to make the claim that gamers are interested in the latest mobile games etc, but there's no truth in that. I mean, are you seriously going to stop playing game X on your 360 or PS3 because a new expansion pack to Angry birds came out? Hardly. Mobile games are extremely simple and boring and are only used to waste time on the buss etc.

I'm not seeing consoles die anytime soon in the next 5 years, especially since developers are always trying to wow us with the new hardware we can attach to our tvs. sure, internet games like those on facebook or on your phone are becoming popular but they are becoming popular with people who normally don't play games. So no, consoles aren't dying they are being overwhelmed by the larger group of casual mobile/facebook gamers.

btw, how would playing "street fighter" on pc be a bad thing? you know you can connect controllers to your pc and pcs have more customization.

This whole "Are consoles dying?" crap.... is just crap. Its actually completely retarded. Nobody who is an Xbox player will exchange their xbox for playing shit games on the ipad.... These "mobile games" are bringing in new gamers who wouldn't be playing otherwise. Its the same crap as farmville and things like that. You don't hear anybody saying "well now that I can play farmville for free im not going to play starcraft anymore", its the non-traditional gamers who these things appeal to.

They need to predict the death of something to make news....

Remember how the PC was supposed to be dead 5 years ago? The only things that are looking a little weak are hand held consoles, but then I dont really use hand held consoles, so it's just my perception.

But then personally I havent really touched my ps3 for a long time now, ever since I started working I got a decent pc. From then on I've been using the computer. And I've also been playing some of the more popular indie games on the pc and really liking them to the usual polished stuff..(I dont really use psn).

There's a huge market for console games to be played on PC's. I was thinking the other day if Final Fantasy XIII-2 was for PC I would definitely buy it. However they just don't publish for PC games anymore.

It's much cheaper for me to purchase a game controller and plug it into my PC and play than it is to go and spend 300-600 for a console for one game I like. There's just a few console games people want to play and buying an entire console to have access to it is such a pain. You honestly have to measure the entertainment value vs. cost. I don't even want to get into how you certain games are only published for certain consoles so you're pidgeon-holed.

Just sucks really, I grew up playing consoles and taking them over to my friends to play but it's just not worth it to me anymore.
Blame it on my A.D.D

Maybe the public is coming aware that gaming consoles are just specialized PC's that after 2 years become a pain for the whole gaming industry? Or well maybe not public but all the developers.
Although there is only that much fov you can cut before everyone realizes something is wrong.( which IMO was about 5 years ago)

Exactly as said above: Mobile gaming is only really booming in the demographic that wouldn't usually play games. I personally see mobile gaming (iPhone, android etc) as more of a 'Gateway' to more serious gaming (such as Xbox, PS3, PC) - Turning non-gamers into more serious gamers.

The whole gamer-nerd view has shifted in the last few years as pretty much everyone is getting into consoles, including a high percentage of girls, which I'd put down to the whole 'Gateway' concept of mobile gaming or playing more casual games in the past (e.g, most of my past girlfriends got into the original Pokemon games at a younger age and migrated to more serious consoles like Xbox 360 later on).

I personally can't see consoles dieing in the near future - I'd write more but it's monday morning and i'm tired.

Hope you all have a great day!

I give consoles another 5-10 years before they become obsolete, just like how the arcades ended when the first consoles came around, so too will the consoles end with better tablets and smart phones being released.

Arcades tried to stay afloat with gimmick controls (You know the ones, like those race car games you see in movie theaters or the Jurassic park shooter, etc..) but it wasn't enough to stay competitive with the convenience of having a more simpler, cheaper game machine in your home. And now we can see consoles doing the EXACT same thing (Wii motion, xbox kinect, DDR, etc..)

Believe it or not, smart phones and tabloids are starting to rival the processing power of modern consoles (The same consoles that companies actually lose money when trying to sell) and with better onboard graphics, a larger demographic for potential customers and the cost of producing games drastically reduced, it wont be long before game developers shift their attention away from consoles.

Hell, even now theres technology coming out that would allow MMO's like WoW and EvE to be played on your iphone and god only knows what will become of these games when a true cloud service takes over for streaming any kind of games directly to your phone (think of netflix but for games instead of movies.... instant access to any game).

There is just to much going for these mini computers for developers NOT to switch
More potential customers
Cheaper development cost
vastly improving technology
better monetization that makes publishers completely bypass the retailer and sells directly to the consumer

Just like someone above posted, I remember distinctly when PC gaming was 'dying' a few years back. Sensationalism in the media seems to be at an all time high these days.

It's writer's jobs to produce opinion pieces like this, but you surely can't take them all seriously. It seems to me that sometimes they just want to get people to post on forums like this in order to direct traffic to their website.

"This year, we have seen the launch of the new iPad, a device which, despite its current whizzery, offers future powers we can only imagine." - made me laugh.

The nuts and bolts of the article comes down to 1) The gaming industry is not immune to the current global financial problems.2) mobile devices are a growing sector. Therefore it says, consoles must be on the way out. The thing that is really driving the growth of mobile "apps" is that they are easy to develop for small studios or even individuals, and have thus far offered a relatively low risk/reward ratio. Consoles are a very inaccessible market for small time developers because the games are so costly to develop the risk/reward ratio is very high for all but the strongest games franchises.

The issue that the IGN article doesn't address is what will happen with the mobile app industry when the big-boys move in to steal all the business. Inevitably the swelling market on mobile devices will attract big companies that will be able to dominate the market which is now relatively disperse. This will probably lead to stagnation.

It has always been a huge risk to release a new console. Almost every time a new console is released it is make or break for that company. However, since the market is dominated by only 3 companies, and they have very particular user bases, releasing a new console now is less risky than it has ever been.

The real risk is coming from within the companies. The temptation for Sony and Microsoft to try and own 100% of the distribution of games on it's platform by limiting them to download only seems to be such a big prize, but it is a very big gamble, because the user base is very used to trading used games, which allows the price of new games to remain high. If everybody had to purchase brand new games all the time, there seems little doubt that far fewer games would be played, resulting in a weaker online community. The last thing that Microsoft and Sony can afford to risk is their users switching platforms due to frustrations with online gaming.

So this is how I see it. Mobile devices will remain popular, but the small time developers cannot last. Consoles are not going to die, unless by the hand of their own creators.

I don't necessarily think that the rise of web browser/mobile games will hurt console sales, I can see consoles being more widely used for web browsing in the future.
