Hello TL'ers!
I am briefly gonna explain my situation. I am 15 years old and I have a job that gives 350 USD a month. Right now I can afford either: A Nikon D3100,or a new PC. I enjoy both gaming and photography, gaming most though. Now, and I have been thinking about this many many times, what should I buy first? And what should I delay a few months?
Right now, I am leaning mostly to the camera, as I like photography, and my old Canon Powershot is getting old, warnout and I can see on the pics it gets more and more grainy as time progresses. The game I by far play most (almost exclusively) is DotA 2. My current PC can BARELY handle it. When I mean barely, I am talking lowest settings and 1024x768 res. I would enjoy playing at the highest, but I am generally not a person who plays games because of the graphics, but because of the gameplay. When I play DotA 2, I don't really think more of the graphics. But if I could play in a higher res with highest settings, it would definately be awesome!
But thats where I really can't decide, and why I ask you guys. I just think it would be damn overkill to delay something that I would enjoy much, shooting stunning pictures, instead of delaying the PC, which would give me better graphics that I would probably not notice after a couple of games getting used to it.
Sooooo, my question: Given the details I have given you, do you think I should go for the camera, or PC?
And yes....I do know that this a lame question, and that I should be able to sort these things out myself, but I am just really undesicive when it comes to this one.
Thanks.
Best regards, Josh.

Poll: What should he choose?Camera (28) 51% PC (27) 49% 55 total votes Your vote: What should he choose? (Vote): PC (Vote): Camera
I think you should go for the camera. Dota 2 isn't gonna be out for some time, so you'll have time to upgrade your PC for the final product. Also, I encourage outdoor activities.

Ah, thanks for the poll. Good idea, didn't think of doing that :D

4-0 Camera, not even close. I mean, did you see game 3? Completely outplayed, what a comeback from a build order loss.
Honestly, I think you said it best in your OP, having the camera would enable to follow a separate hobby of yours, while a new computer would just make a hobby you can already follow marginally better. In less than two months at your job you'll have enough for a nice laptop too, so that seems less urgent. Couple with the camera's top 3 control, I have to go with the option less suited to a site dedicated to gaming, and encourage you to but your Nikon D3100.
Edit: The people below me make a good point, my post is assuming you already have basic equipment and a solid, developed interest in photography.

I say computer =P
I don't know just how passionate you are about photography, but amongst almost all of my friends who own DSLR's and stuff, they toy around with it for a bit then completely forget that they have one in a couple months.
|
If you're undecided, and play lots of games, the PC, absolutely. For one, with photography, the equipment is largely secondary unless you need extreme quality. A sunset doesn't have minimum system requirements, you know? And for two, it sounds like between the two, you spend more time on gaming related activities.
Besides, it's a $650 MSRP camera. If you love photography enough to spend THAT, you should have enough stuff related to the hobby for my minimum system requirements bit to apply. If you don't have any camera stuff really yet, you should be spending entry level until you decide for sure to get into the hobby that solidly. That's a REALLY expensive toy to end up never using if you enjoy it less than you expect.

Cameraaaa you will be glad ten years you weren't browsing pictures on 4chan thinking those are awesome pictures but instead taking those pictures.
|
You'll want a decent computer for photography as well since you'll be editing your photos of course.
|
Camera will depreciate less quickly, so you can buy one now and not worry as much about its losing value.

I'm totally on board with camera first. It's not like it's an absolute choice of one or the other. This time of year there's not too many games that come out and new technology will keep pushing prices down. Camera tech doesn't change nearly as fast (though it's still quite fast) and it'll hold value far better as someone else said.
It's a good time of year to be picking up a camera too as you'll be really excited about getting out there to use it just as it's starting to get a little warmer and brighter and we start to see the effects of seasonal shifts. It can be an incredibly rewarding hobby because every great photo you ever take will give you and possibly other people joy for the rest of your life. When you win a game of Dota 2 or something like sc2 it can feel great but that feeling doesn't really linger.

The last time I was in that spot (I think I was 16 back then) I picked the PC with the following reasoning:
HAVE YOU EVER TRIED EDITING PHOTOS WITH A HORRIBAD CRAPPY PC?
A very, very big part of photography is that you're able to process .raw files and play around with them in Photoshop however you please. You will have fuck no fun at all with anything related to editing pictures with that PC.
Anyone who says "Hurpdurp make better pictures" has no real idea what they're talking about. Postprocessing is used to make a bad picture okay, a good picture great and a great picture a piece of fucking art.
My suggestion: Buy a PC. Then find a used camera 2-3 months down the road. For most DSLRs buying a used camera and/or used lenses is no problem at all. Make sure to check the lense prices and plan what lenses you want (for me this tipped me towards Canon over Nikon e.g. cause I was able to save about 2k Euro over the course of 3 years with the same results 'cause of cheaper used lenses being available.).

Hmm, most on PC. I have also been thinking of upgrading my PC a little bit, and a little bit of overclocking. Should be in budget for next month. So Camera now, PC in a month ^^
|
If you buy a PC, you're a gamer. If you buy a camera, you're an open-minded artist.
Given, of course, that you have a genuine passion for photography.
I would go for the camera. A good PC is very expensive, too.

I would like to clarify that I do not have a "horibad" pc. It is just not good for games because it has the integrated Intel HD Graphics in it. As far as I know, it should be able to handle processing RAW images in PS fine.

As far as you know? That's a seriously expensive camera if you're not much actively into photography yet...

I do take a lot of photgraphs and such, I have just not been bothered to start doing all the post processing yet. That is what I intend when I get a better camera also. Right now I am shooting with an old Canon. Just because you havn't learned PS yet doesn't mean you don't like photography or aint actively into photography yet.

I'm aware, you'd just made it sound like you didn't really have anything much to do with photography yet. I'd be leery to spend that much until I'd REALLY gotten into the hobby.
