Wouldn't it be nice to play a game of forum mafia with a radical twist? Meaning without the forum in it.
All that reading.. I don't claim it has only downsides to the dynamic of the game. As others have stated, it probably exercises some cognitive brain function and trains you to be more attentive and capture essential stuff more easily, but this entry is not meant to debate that.
How would you like to speak and listen, instead of read and write?
Presumably every player has a microphone, doesn't need to be this one. And of course a sound playing device. A dedicated site or flash interface with visually appealing design facilitating the sharing of content optional.
So yeah .. that's about it, how do you like the idea? You basically download the other guys` statements in the form of a mp3 file and listen carefully to the argumentations and even voice tone and style of speech, which is a whole additional dimension to what we have going on now. Likewise you add your vocal contribution when you get home or somewhere private like a university bathroom (taking a dump would be a whole new experience).
I wouldn't go so far as to include video feed, this would kind of be too problematic (privacy, people trolling you, the file would be too big etc) and I can't be bothered. But voice is definitely ok.
As for the people don't have time issue, which often times gets discussion and thus gameplay to stagnate, this could be slightly beneficial in that regard also. I mean you wouldn't go walking down the street from home to work with your iphone reading mafia posts, but you would be inclined to listen to them wouldn't you.
Imagine a brave new world where everybody finally has something cool to do while jogging, dying of boredom during some useless class, making the bed and brushing teeth, faking an orgasm etc. IMO it's a good way to balance out that sleep, work, play ratio.
In closing here's a model so you buy in to the idea more easily, it's a proven marketing strategy.

skype mafia? so innovative..

Nope, not skype mafia. Sry. Try again.
Skype mafia is live which takes the whole piss out of everything. If you want live you play party game mafia. This is different

this would work over skype or google circles however the problem is that Mafia is an extremely interactive game by nature that would require one to be able to interject thoughts or opinions in real time in order to make any kind of progress in scum hunting. I think the game is much too violatal to be played in this manner. however it would be cool to give it a try and see what happens.

The overhead for converting into mp3 and uploading is too high. Are you really going to spend 5 minutes on that for posting 2 sentences?
Would love to play skype mafia if it runs, even though I might struggle with speaking English real time at first.

It's not skype mafia ffs! Doesn't have anything to do with the fragile and flawed concept of skype mafia. This is forum mafia but instead of typing your post and reading the other guys` posts you record yourself talking and send the mp3, and respectively download and listen to the replies, cases, fluff, lore, FOS etc.
It's just like TL Mafia if there's a medium to stash all the input chronologically and make filtering available for easy overview. With the sole difference of speak&listen instead of read&type. A big difference. That sparks new dimensions, augmenting gameplay without compromising the structure and feel.
as for google, facebook etc. These social media sites could be a huge catalyst if they would implement a voice mafia section. I bet since they have succeeded in getting you to post pictures of yourself and telling them who you're sleeping with etc. they'd love to hear your voice too. But who cares about that nowadays.
@hypercube I totally got the wrong idea about what you were saying. Well yeah that's 5 minutes sacrificed for the privilege of listening whenever, wherever to the stuff that you would normally have to read. Often times it's not even elevated language and has typos and opaque style so if you do like reading you're probably better off buying a book. While audio can be pretty hard to follow too, you're more likely to have fun with it and make the extra effort.
Posting a couple of sentences isn't really what you should go for in a mafia game anyway. If this makes people want to pack more substance into their input it's a win all the more.

This idea is actually quite interesting...
But I see what coag means... I think it would end up with to much confusion over who said what when and how.
Would be awesome to try though =)

We'd need what, a shared microsoft skydrive or something to upload everything. Oh wait .. OMG, Soundcloud you guys!. It's perfect! It even let's you place comments on timelines oohh baby. I actually haven't thought of that. Amazing.
