I was on my way to a team meeting at the university. Walking up to the bus stop, everything went fine. A different bus than the one I was going to take arrived about a minute late, causing the bus stop to be occupied by two busses at once, since mine arrived on time just a few seconds after. Now that isn't a problem since it's a large enough station to hold two busses without problems.
The rear bus was mine, so i headed for the door. Two steps before said door, i heard a bump sound and some girl started screaming something about that a guy was hit by a car. I headed to the front of the bus and onto the street through the gap between both busses. a Car was standing slightly to the right and in front of it first the girl together with two of her friends, clenching onto a phone with a small blood spatter on it and another meter in front a guy lying on the street. I assume it was his phone which fell onto the street when he got hit and she had picked it up.
I had already pulled out my phone while getting there and beat the front bus driver in call emergency services first (he was still dialing when i was already waiting for a reply). Sadly, as the road was now completely blocked since another bus had arrived in the other direction, it became rather loud around there. Thinking about it now, i have no clue why i didn't get the idea to just turn up the volume, i guess there was just a little bit much going on. But whatever, i still could roughly understand my responder.
For starters, i remembered you're supposed to say your name, so i started with that and at the same time took a look at the guy that got hit, to get a rough idea of how bad it was. He was laying on his side, conscious, the people around had rolled up a blanket to rest his head on. He was bleeding a little above the right eye, luckily not a dangerous amount at all, and he had some blood on his left hand which he kept trying to hold up for some reason. I couldn't see any wound on the hand itself though, no clue where the blood came from.
He knew he was hit by a car, but how he couldn't remember how he he got from the car to the ground and was asking if he overturned. Luckily, his brain seemed to work flawlessly, talking and responding without problems. However, bleeding from the head still means he was hit rather hard (and the cars wind shield was completely broken as well. i didn't take any pictures though, as i was rather occupied with other things).
So i told the emergency phone line that we need an ambulance, while slightly screwing up stating the location. Somehow i assumed the, the answering person was a local, so i just said "In town X at bus stop Y" and we had to back-and-forth two times because i had a minor brain lag, where i couldn't think of the street name immediately. But we got that sorted out, and within a minute he said he'd send someone. I told the guy on the ground his ambulance was coming then stood around now knowing what to do for a moment (there were enough people attending to him already).
The girl and her two friends still stood there, and she was still clenching onto her phone and crying while both her friends tried to calm her down. Since they were still standing on the road, i asked them if they belonged together with the hit guy somehow. Turns out, that girl was his girlfriend. Later i overheard her saying that it was her fault that he got hit, i don't know if she urged him to head over the street so he ran out between the two buses or whatever, but she was really shaken up. After she said they were together, i didn't try to get her off the street anymore. So, I just let her stand there, as it felt it would probably be more trouble, trying to separate them, than she'd cause by just standing around, considering she wasn't obstructing any traffic.
Since the bus in the other direction had cleared the station again, cars started to drive through that lane and the traffic got flowing a little bit again. The drivers that were coming by however started to screw up a lot because it was a bit tricky to see the traffic situation past two buses. So i proceeded to play traffic cop for the next 3 to 5 minutes since my bus wasn't going anywhere anyways.
Then, the ambulance finally arrived and started attending to the hit guy. The girlfriend was freaking out even more, since they told her she couldn't come along when they drive him to the hospital later. They did however order a second ambulance for her. I don't know if i should have thought of that myself while calling the emergency hotline, i had just discarded the girls state at that time, because i thought she was only a scared bystander rather than a involved person in shock.
About 3 more minutes of playing traffic cop later, the first police car arrived. I assume the ambulance ordered them in together with the second ambulance. That's another thing i probably should have asked for on the phone. But, as it was not that big of a road (your normal (european) small town both way main road, so somewhat frequent traffic in both directions regulated by traffic lights every few 500 to 1000 hundred meters), it was no problem managing this by manually waving cars around without further support.
I gave the first cop a short briefing on the situation, hit guy there, freaked out girlfriend here, car driver there. I also asked him if he'd take over traffic control, and, while he said yes, he proceeded to not do so and instead started taking notes and writing down witness identities. The hit guy was strapped up and loaded into the ambulance by now. They gave him a neck stabilizer thing cause the windshield looked pretty bad, and apparently he broke his left leg, i assume maybe more than once since he said to them, it hurt everywhere. His girlfriend was still crying and shaking and clenching the phone. Her two friends however had finally moved her off the road, now that she couldn't see her boyfriend anymore anyways.
So after another 3 minutes more of playing traffic cop, a second police car arrived, and they then took over waving cars around. That's pretty much where my part ends. I asked if they needed anything from me and they said no, so i got onto my bus (which was still standing there because it was blocked and the driver was probably the best witness to the accident, as it happened directly outside of his window x.x
The second ambulance arrived, attending to the girlfriend, and shortly after, the police cleared my bus for leaving. They blocked of the road so he could maneuver out and i got on my way to arrive at the team meeting just about 15 minutes late. It's weird how much stuff happens in under 20 minutes Oo
So .. conclusions: Although i kept a clear head no problem, i still semi screwed up the emergency services call. I'll try to do better next time. Also, i need to consider mentioning other problems as well, not just those that bleed. Personal improvement goals, yay! Although, obviously, i'd rather not have that happen again, just so i get training. Can't really justify that.
"Fun" stuff for those who survived this picture-less wall of text (sorry! next blog will have pictures again, promise ;P): Two stops further down on the bus line, some dude got on the bus. I don't know exactly what he and the driver talked, but i think i heard something like "Just because of a stupid accident" when he turned away. I guess he was complaining about the bus being late and, after the driver explained that there was an accident, continued to rage at him for not just leaving the scene. I'm not 100% sure if i got that right, but if i did .. wow, what a douche.
anyhow, thanks for reading. You may proceed with your day now.
