Today, one of my friends asked me why I didn't have a iphone (or android phone), and they thought it was really weird that I said I don't need one since I'm on the internet so much anyway. Everywhere you look now, people are glued to their phone, checking emails, going on facebook and twitter, playing games, texting etc. It feels kinda weird to not have one. There's definitely some pressure to get one, just to fit in. People look at me weird whenever I tell them I don't have one, or if I pull out my phone from 2008. You see people get them for their kids all the time; you also see people that can barely afford to pay rent each month keep theirs. For some reason I feel like I should get one, to not be the weird kid without a smartphone, yet I don't really need it...

well, Idk why I posted this blog. Just something I wanted to talk about. Anyone have a similar experience? Are smartphones really that great? post away.

My phone has an internet browser, but no apps or shit like that (its an ok phone), I don't wanna spend all my time browsing and doing stuff on a 4 inch screen, rather use laptop. Also why would you get an iPhone because everyone else has one?? Dat some high school logic brah.

I like to fiddle with the features and modding abilities of smartphones but I got a HD7 WP.... for free.

Well that's not the point, why the hell does it matter that they have nicer phones? You are probably the only one who thinks you are weird for not having a smartphone.

I don't have a smart phone either.

Just never wanted one.

I'm in a super rich area, at times I feel the same way.

Ultimately, although they are convenient I don't see them to be worth the price, and most of the people that have them, like most of the people in high school, are vapid.

I have an android phone, but my plan doesn't include data or anything, so it's mostly just a fancy normal cellphone that doesn't cost anything extra (it was 0$ with a plan)

Two Words:
Angry Birds

That game alone makes my iphone great.

Beyond that though, I wouldn't even own a cell phone if it wasn't for my wife.

No iphone/android. No texting. No itouch. I don't need any of that fancy stuff; I get by just fine without them. Arguably, I get by better without them since I actually, you know, pay attention in class instead of playing games. I can understand the need for texting, but smart phones are a dumb investment imo. Kind of like how vitamin water isn't healthy.

I'm still using my 4 year old phone which only has gprs or something of that sort. I love it, plus I keep my phone on silent most of the time, leaves me free to just play sc2.

Apple treats their workers horribly overseas (china) Horrible working conditions.

I like texting but First off, i like BUTTONS more than a Touch pad... wtf there are reasons that we have buttons.
second, they cost a LOT
third, they don't give you anything except instant attention gratification lol

don't do it. iphones are a representation of the financial divide sweeping across america.

I gave up on my phone because I found myself staring at it all the time. I didn't want to turn into a phone zombie, the type of person that now just dominates the landscape. I upgraded to a tablet. It is a way way better device, but it isn't something you can walk around with and use, so I don't pull it out until I have time and space. I enjoy it a lot more, and I no longer have the phantom vibrations in my pocket that cause me to check my phone every two minutes.

I resisted having any type of mobile phone for the longest time, but now that I have a smart phone, I find it extremely useful. Just having the Internet and Google maps on a phone is so convenient. Directions, searching for places, finding phone numbers, etc. I've had an iPhone for almost 4 years, although I don't even play any games and I have 2 pages of apps, half of which are the default ones. I still love the thing.

I actually don't even have a cell phone. Gets me a lot of weird looks: I'm 30, and a computer programmer and gamer, so people tend to assume I've got the latest and greatest smartphone, but when my last cell broke like four years ago, I realized I didn't really miss it and never got a replacement.

I didn't get one until recently because I didn't need one. And I realised after I got one that Istill don't need one all I do on my phone is texting, phonecalls and listen to music. So I kinda regret that I bought one. Texting was so much easier on my old phone and the battery sucks on smartphones in general. I'm thinking of selling my galaxy nexus and use my beloved nokia xpressmusic again (๑ت๑)♡

I don't talk to anyone except on the internet. Why pay so much for a phone when I can just use vent? I haven't used a phone in over a decade and don't foresee myself ever using one. I don't even use land lines. I really can't see a reason why anyone would want a smart phone to begin with. If you need a phone, just get a cheap classic.

I got my first smartphone a few months ago and like it a lot, but that's it. It saves me some time when I can read my emails in the metro/taxi.
I find it sad too when I see people don't talk to each just because they're glued to their phone.
I've even seen couples having dinner at a restaurant and not talking. Playing retarded games and checking their facebook comments instead. Seriously wtf ?!

Not having a smart phone isnt all bad. I mean.. at the end of the day i am sure your phone is better than mine.

For reference here is mine, but throw in used and abused look.. with a crack in the screen. I have picture messaging... but the phone is too ghetto to receive picture messaging.

Really tho.. ive never felt i needed a smart phone. I have a computer for the internet, the only thing that a smart phone would give me is the ability to look at TL more than i already do.... and have more games on my phone which isnt really necessary. Other than that its still just used for texting. Big deal?

If i was working in a business that required me to check my e-mail for work related purposed at all hours of the day this would be different, but at the moment i have no actual need for one outside of distracting me with games and such.
It rained today inside my head...

Ah yes, that topic.
I got myself an HTC Sensation XE 5 months ago, because my phone broke anyways (Nokia 2700, before that I had the best one ever: Nokia 3200~ ;_;).
I wasn'n never really in need of a smartphone but got interested in it. So a few weeks ago I got tired of the touch screen input and bought a HTC Desire Z (which has a hw keyboard) and it was so worth it.

I'm not on facebook or any "social network", so I mostly use it to surf when I'm bored and waiting for a train. XD
And for everyone who knows it: Cyanogenmod ftw~!

A friend of mine just went from a flip phone to a smart phone. He was one of those guys who never understood why people needed smart phones and always loathed when he saw people on their phone not talking to one another.

Then he got a smartphone, and he now wonders how he lived without one.

If you're not using a smartphone for work or utility related activities then it's just an expensive toy, mostly used to entertain yourself during times when you should probably be paying attention to something else. The vast majority of high school students and most college students don't need one.

Seriously, never envy iPhones. The moment you buy a smart phone, you are bound to buy the following latest version until you're broke.

I used a Nokia 3310 since it was new, till Julylast year, when I got an HTC Sensation. But even with this device I only check my e-mail (Very useful for work, really, mainly why I got it) and make phone calls. Texting happens too, but more often than not is it a tool for shop list sharing between my roommate and I (Nothing my 3310 couldn't do...).

i love my htc desire, it's made my life like 100x easier since I've got it. And i've even managed to avoid being one of those kids that whips their phones out all the time at social gatherings. i don't think they're necessary, but if you do alot of internet like things that arent gaming, they're a god send if used properly

I find it unfair sometimes that when I was about 10 years old (Im 24 now) it was so freaking hard to convince my parents to buy me a gameboy(we could easily afford it np) but now I see all these kids with iphones/ipads and thats like 3x more expensive.

W0000t !?!?!?!? You dont't have an Iphone???? you kidding???!?!? You so weird omfglmfaowtfgtfo!!!!

Now seriously: I don't have it neither. But hey, what's wrong with that? I use my phone to call and text, maybe write down something quickly when I dont have a pen with me. And I am not gonna pay so much to be able to view facebook 24/7 lol. When iPhones will be able to make a hamburger whenever I want and for free then I will consider getting it.

I only use my mobile phone for emergencies, calls when other contact will be difficult and texting if email or other is not convenient or not reliably fast enough at asking a friend a question (re. purchasing something of interest to us both etc).
Remain strong, you're probably just more interesting than all the brain-dead/uncreative/perpetually bored morons with thumbs glued to iPhones and iPods flowing from their ears. :D

I used to think I'm fine on my non-smart cellphone - until I got the Samsung Galaxy S2. No, I don't have time to be glued on to my phone because I'd get fired from my job.

You don't really need a smartphone, true. However, it's definitely awesome having one, and as long as you keep your discipline together, you won't become one of the billion phone zombies flinging little birds on their phones.

Any old brick phone can do that. I only need my smartphone since i need to have easy access to my mail/internet for work purposes, otherwise i could live without one easily.

I don't even have a cell phone, not even one of the ones you buy from CVS and buy minutes for. I still operate fine without it since I'm on my computer so much.

I used an old chocolate flip phone for the past six years and just recently got a Samsung Galaxy II because my flip finally died - it's a huge difference. The convenience of being able to check emails, text easier, look up something online with 4G, it's awesome, you'll know what you were missing when you get one.

Are your parents well off? They can cost around 95$/ month after taxes. That's not trivial in this economy. Especially to give a kid.

In the mean time read these stories of people who are apparently in the same 'boat' as you are.

Pretty much this.

OK, I lied. My brother gave me an old one, so that my family can contact me if they want to. Too bad it's always just at home and I never take it with me.

I don't have an iPhone either. I see it purely as an object of fashion and luxury I mean if you're going to invest that much money you better be living out in the middle of nowhere where your 3G/4G network will actually help you whereas in the city you have internet access almost anywhere.

In terms of productivity, I don't see it making much of a difference. I bought myself a tablet after much consideration and with the help of TL as well, and I got to say its fun to have. But not productive, but it met my needs in terms of mobility when I'm commuting.

I have an LG Korean Lollipop flip phone. Text/call/camera, thats just about it. I already spend enough time on the computer. I don't need another device to tweak, take care of, customize, and worry about charging the damn thing.

I don't have a smartphone either. All I use my phone for is calls & texts, so there's no need for me to splash out on something fancy & procrastinating-inducing. If you ask me, I think some people get too hung up trying to be tech-savvy when they don't necessarily need or have use for it. They get it because it's the latest thing and they don't want to fall behind.

i got a flip phone in 2006 and i used that until summer of 2011, when i accidentally left my phone on the bus. i cancelled that line and got a replacement phone for free (another flip phone). the way i see it is if you get a smartphone that's the end of the road. you're going to want to upgrade as soon as technology improves, which is all the time. it's better to just use the same phone for 20 years then get the best smartphone or whatever phone they make after 20 years and show it off with all the money you saved from not buying phones or accessories or whatever else for your ancient technology phone for 20 years. maybe i'm just weird

I used to have an old phone with the simplest plan ever. No texting, nothing. All the way until last year. Then I got an iPhone 4s with data. I don't want to say it's life-changing or anything, but it really is convenient. I spend almost all of my time on my laptop with internet too, but there are so many times where, when I do go out, I'll want to know something on the fly, or I need a map, or I'm bored on the bus and want to watch some movie on netflix, or being able to check the campus shuttle times, or being able to text my friends, or what have you. It's like, I didn't really think I needed it, but once I got it, it just made things easier.

That's what happened when I used to play WoW. LOL

Anyways I do not own a smart phone and hell I don't even have a cell phone. I really should get a pre-paid phone though for emergencies though, but besides emergencies I see no reason for myself to have a phone.

I receive all my calls through Skype. I have a Skype assigned number for $60 a year.

I'm the same. My last cellphone contract expired a few months ago. Right now I have no phone/cellphone, been using Skype. I have never bought a smart phone or iPhone. Could never bring myself to follow trends to "fit in" and drop a huge sum of money for something that I would hardly use for it's intended purpose. That's right I'm a rebel >

I use a dumbphone. Can't imagine any situation where I'd want a smartphone. My dumbphone lets me call, text, and play games - the only thing I'd get from a smartphone is web access, and when I'm out I really don't need it.

I used a phone from 2003 until last year.
What did I buy? A featurephone with no "smart" capabilities.

As is the case for you, I'm either at the office with a computer, at home with a computer, at a friend's place with my laptop, or at a cafe with my laptop. Sometimes I don't have internet access, but most of the time I do. If I don't have internet access, I pull out a book. The worst that can happen if I don't check my email for 12 hours is that I miss a meal with someone. Not that big a deal, especially since most of my friends know that I don't have a smartphone so they'll often just text me.

Don't get one. If you actually need an iPhone (which you don't) then an Android is a much cheaper alternative which does the job just as well.

Personally I hate them. There's nothing worse than walking into the common room at polytech and seeing 5 people staring at their iPhones not talking to each other. The same thing happens to people who get laptops. It's pretty pathetic.

As someone constantly organizing events, emailing, texting, setting up meetings in and around campus for orgs and shit, it's pretty much necessary, albeit annoying that im glued to my phone

i dont have access to a laptop at all times because my laptop is too bulky to carry around with me and a phone is quicker and faster for dealing with time sensitive stuff and on-campus computers are too slow, buggy, and randomly located (or full up)

but most people not doing admin kind of stuff really dont need to shell out the cash for a smartphone and data plan, it's ridiculous how much useless shit people do with their phones when its really not necessary

Got an android phone that I don't use for anything except texting/talking and hardly even that, for the same reasons OP put for not getting one. I don't really need it as I'm on the internet so much anyway and there's no situations where I feel I need to do it from the phone in my life currently. Tbh I don't know why I got it.

Was rocking a w810i until last week. Saw a Samsung Gio for 80 bucks with tax, had to pull the trigger (being cheap ftw).
It is pretty useful, I can check emails and junk without hauling my laptop (or jumping on a lab computer) now.
Side effects include staying glued to social media though... :/

I have an old ass Nokia, the frame on the front has fallen off :D
I only use my phone to occasionally ring and text people, I don't want or need any more than that. I just use a good old reliable Samsung MP3 player to entertain me on the commute to work.

I got a big sexy desktop for all my internet needs. Besides I'm sure those sorts of phones are heavily overpriced... especially the Apple ones.

Why would you check your email, facebook, etc on a phone...

Just get a laptop. And learn to hide it under your desk at school/college/work/wherever.

Mm.. I can think of plenty of reasons why someone would use their phone to check their email among other things...

Maybe you don't like/need a smartphone and that's perfectly fine. But to suggest everyone get a laptop and learn to hide it.. at work..? lol what.

Pretty silly.

The only reason I would need one is so I can get emails faster. Sometimes after leaving work something important happens and I won't know until I check my email 2 or 3 hours later. If I had a phone that gets email I could see it sooner.

I mean, it's a personal choice, but there are countless reasons why having an iPhone is useful. I don't understand how people are claiming laptops are substitutes for iPhones (I don't carry about my laptop unless I am going to class or something)

Let's see, I own and love the iPhone because I can check/respond important e-mails on a timely manner such as change in meeting time or location, Facetime call with my family members far away whenever I want, organize schedule and be alerted as I want, use it as a GPS navigator, get instant update on weather with one button, watch CNN and ESPN videos as they come, check bank account whenever I want, get live updates on buses so I know when to go to the bus stop, find the restaurant I want whenever and wherever, and surf the web without carrying a laptop. Yea, you don't need a smartphone to get by. But it makes life much easier, and it serves a definite purpose apart from laptops. It's AWESOME.

I've had an iPhone for 2 years+ now. I agree with the post above saying smartphones are not the same as laptops. It's just very convenient to have the internet in your pocket wherever you go. I mainly use mine with wifi so I don't pay for data at all. I live in a city that's blanketed in wifi. I use the skype($30/year)/magicjack(free) app to call any voip US/Canada number unlimited. It's really great for playing games, watching movies/vids (My Little Pony!) youtube, streaming SC2 via twitch, etc on a small 3.5 inch screen. Seriously, its great when you have it, but if you don't, no a big deal either.

You're still in high school, so try and get a job and buy an older iPhone 3gs or android. Well, maybe not in this economy...

Had it since I was an undergraduate (context: I'm in the 4th year of postgraduate now). It texts, it phones and it doesn't break, basically all I need.

I have a similar Sony Ericson phone. Had it for about 6 years now. Dropped this fucker plenty of times and it still works great.

Fun fact, when I showed my phone to my friend 4 years ago, he said it was fat like a brick. 2 years later, he said it was so small, haha.

I think once you take the step and change to a smartphone, you won't ever go back. It's just so convenient to have the internet in your pocket. I can read the news while taking the bus, check latest sports results, write emails and notes, book movie tickets for the night, check directions to this particular mall, and the list goes on and on. Whatspp is also an awesome app for socializing with groups of friends. I know you could probably do most of it on a laptop, but its pretty inconvenient to take your laptop out every time you want to do something compared to a smartphone. And who brings their laptop when going out with friends?
