Yeah, having been on USC campus and having seen a ton of people with iphones, I can imagine the looks you get XD

are there any phones with wifi capabilities that do not require the purchase of a data plan?

I'm still using my 4 year old phone which only has gprs or something of that sort. I love it, plus I keep my phone on silent most of the time, leaves me free to just play sc2.

Apple treats their workers horribly overseas (china) Horrible working conditions.
I like texting but First off, i like BUTTONS more than a Touch pad... wtf there are reasons that we have buttons. second, they cost a LOT third, they don't give you anything except instant attention gratification lol
don't do it. iphones are a representation of the financial divide sweeping across america.

I gave up on my phone because I found myself staring at it all the time. I didn't want to turn into a phone zombie, the type of person that now just dominates the landscape. I upgraded to a tablet. It is a way way better device, but it isn't something you can walk around with and use, so I don't pull it out until I have time and space. I enjoy it a lot more, and I no longer have the phantom vibrations in my pocket that cause me to check my phone every two minutes.

I resisted having any type of mobile phone for the longest time, but now that I have a smart phone, I find it extremely useful. Just having the Internet and Google maps on a phone is so convenient. Directions, searching for places, finding phone numbers, etc. I've had an iPhone for almost 4 years, although I don't even play any games and I have 2 pages of apps, half of which are the default ones. I still love the thing.

I actually don't even have a cell phone. Gets me a lot of weird looks: I'm 30, and a computer programmer and gamer, so people tend to assume I've got the latest and greatest smartphone, but when my last cell broke like four years ago, I realized I didn't really miss it and never got a replacement.

I didn't get one until recently because I didn't need one. And I realised after I got one that Istill don't need one all I do on my phone is texting, phonecalls and listen to music. So I kinda regret that I bought one. Texting was so much easier on my old phone and the battery sucks on smartphones in general. I'm thinking of selling my galaxy nexus and use my beloved nokia xpressmusic again (๑ت๑)♡

Being away from internet access for a while is liberating.

I don't talk to anyone except on the internet. Why pay so much for a phone when I can just use vent? I haven't used a phone in over a decade and don't foresee myself ever using one. I don't even use land lines. I really can't see a reason why anyone would want a smart phone to begin with. If you need a phone, just get a cheap classic.
|
I don't have a smartphone either. My cellphone is payed for by the company I work for and I picked the most basic one there was in the webshop. Don't worry, you are not alone

I got my first smartphone a few months ago and like it a lot, but that's it. It saves me some time when I can read my emails in the metro/taxi. I find it sad too when I see people don't talk to each just because they're glued to their phone. I've even seen couples having dinner at a restaurant and not talking. Playing retarded games and checking their facebook comments instead. Seriously wtf ?!

I thought this until I got one. I love it, so useful. (Don't get an iphone)

Not having a smart phone isnt all bad. I mean.. at the end of the day i am sure your phone is better than mine.
For reference here is mine, but throw in used and abused look.. with a crack in the screen. I have picture messaging... but the phone is too ghetto to receive picture messaging.
+ Show Spoiler +
Really tho.. ive never felt i needed a smart phone. I have a computer for the internet, the only thing that a smart phone would give me is the ability to look at TL more than i already do.... and have more games on my phone which isnt really necessary. Other than that its still just used for texting. Big deal?
If i was working in a business that required me to check my e-mail for work related purposed at all hours of the day this would be different, but at the moment i have no actual need for one outside of distracting me with games and such.

Ah yes, that topic. I got myself an HTC Sensation XE 5 months ago, because my phone broke anyways (Nokia 2700, before that I had the best one ever: Nokia 3200~ ;_;). I wasn'n never really in need of a smartphone but got interested in it. So a few weeks ago I got tired of the touch screen input and bought a HTC Desire Z (which has a hw keyboard) and it was so worth it.
I'm not on facebook or any "social network", so I mostly use it to surf when I'm bored and waiting for a train. XD And for everyone who knows it: Cyanogenmod ftw~!

A friend of mine just went from a flip phone to a smart phone. He was one of those guys who never understood why people needed smart phones and always loathed when he saw people on their phone not talking to one another.
Then he got a smartphone, and he now wonders how he lived without one.

If you're not using a smartphone for work or utility related activities then it's just an expensive toy, mostly used to entertain yourself during times when you should probably be paying attention to something else. The vast majority of high school students and most college students don't need one.

They see this rollin', they hatin'.
Seriously, never envy iPhones. The moment you buy a smart phone, you are bound to buy the following latest version until you're broke.
