Hey all,
I know i havent posted anything in a while so i figured now was as good as ever, as the title read i was kind of discrouaged (for like 10 min), after playing my placement for the new ladder season, started off being one of the only matches i had played in a 1v1 in some time so i was rusty to begin with... and then on top of that i misread my opponent something terrible.... when the smoke settled i ended up with a loss and placed back into the silver league from gold...
at that point it was where the momentary discouragment settled in, i was frustrated and wondering why i had 'let myself go' in terms of SCII.. Then it dawned on me.... to look back at previous games and wouldnt you know it the match maker had gotten it right, i had been playing ALOT of silver players before the end of season 5 and after some thought it made sense that one way or another i was probably going down again...now from this ive heard people say that stuff like this deters them from playing the game as a whole.. once i looked back i actually ended up with the opposite feeling..like maybe this was a good thing....
so i hit find match... and over the span of a 3 hour session i ended up going 8-1 which i was extatic about to say the least, and then today i only managed really to get one good game in since my school work load has shot through the roof finally, but im happy to say i keep the streak alive at 9-1! In closing i guess i pose the question does anyone else ever feel like they've moved backwards? and if so how do you cope?
oops almost forgot! I have other exciting news, As of a couple of days ago i opened the registration for a local SCII tournament sponsored by my colleges computer gaming group! so starting in two ish weeks we are having the players play their matches on saturdays, a friend of mine and i are goign to shout cast the games and hopefully upload to youtube! Definatley stay tuned :D :D

you have to realize that, the game is about getting better and not about winning. winning occurs as a by-product of getting better over a span of time.
then you can feel good as long as you are improving or focusing on improving.

This basically sums up your whole blog. To get back into 1v1 you just need to plunge in. Don't give a shit about how the games go, just get your hands dirty. You'll start to realize some things you've been messing up on, and you'll be able to improve on them, and you'll eventually notice yourself winning a game here or there. Then, as you gain confidence and keep improving, you'll start winning a good percentage of your games. Trust me, I took a 4 month break a while back, and decided to jump back into 1v1's playing as Zerg, a race I'd never played before. My first 20 games I was 2-18... but a couple weeks ago I reached my 400th game, and my record was an even 200-200, with a promotion along the way ^.^
Basically, you can't expect to play solid games if you haven't been playing a consistent amount. Even now, when I go a few days without laddering, it takes 3 or 4 games for me to get back in the groove. So don't feel discouraged, do something about it. Keep playing. As WhiteRa would say, "no GG, no skill!"

The way the ladder is set up you are going to lose games, it's just the way it is. Accept the losses and learn from them.

I quit playing frequently for almost a year, then started again this season. I was previously Diamond, now placed into Gold because I'm rusty as hell. After I got warmed up I won like 9 games in a row 2 days ago and got promoted to Platinum. Then last night I lost almost every game. Looks like Platinum players have gotten a lot better since last year lol.
But no I am not discouraged. As long as I still am learning from my mistakes and getting back my hand speed, figuring out the maps, and learning the new cheeses and timings that people are doing, I feel good. I'll be back to Diamond soon enough.
The only thing that makes me want to uninstall this game is when people pylon block the bottom of my ramp and then cannon my natural (I'm Zerg). It's basically a free win no matter how I respond. Even if I pull drones to kill the pylons before the cannon finishes I still lose a ton of mining time and he can just cancel them and lose almost nothing. If I just accept it and cancel my hatch then he can just expand for free. There's a reason the GSL maps have a neutral supply depot at the bottom of the ramps... this strategy is fucking imbalanced against Zerg.

If I remember correctly there's a special trick I learned from watching psy starcraft's videos a while ago...if you can select a group of drones and spam right click on a specific mineral patch behind the three pylons (in the natural) they'll get clumped up next to one of the pylons. Then if you quickly attack that pylon before they spread out you can kill it in 4 or 5 attacks rather than waiting a minute or so. Then after you can surround cannons pretty easy.
I've never had to deal with that myself but if a protoss tries it I'm gonna see how it works!

Don't let something stupid like leagues define how good you are
|
If your skill improved, but you lost 10 straight games vs stronger players, would that mean that you moved backwards? But if you beat 10 straight games vs people who are way worse than you, you move forward? This stuff happens all the time. People need the wins to define improvement.
