Everytime I go to a internet cafe, I see at least 1/4 of the people play League of Legends. I originally intended to give the game a try but I can only play the Garena version as the international version is practically off limits, which is quite the shame as I know a share of friends that are abroad and I would love to play LoL with them. Because of that, I just did not bother giving the game a try and would rather watch other people play it for a little while whenever I get bored.

Truth be told, I never was exposed to the MOBA genre even though I only played Dota twice and it never got me as hooked as I expected it to be. I was just not into that sort of thing at the time as I'd rather stick to the standard RTS. But as time passed, I have grown quite curious as to how addicting LoL really is. So, swallowing my pride aside, I think it's time I download Garena so that I can finally give League of Legends a try. At least til I have a Dota 2 Beta Key and it's likely I would play that game instead.

And since I am such a noob at the game, I hope you guys can give me some advice on which hero should I start with.

If you plan on playing Dota 2 in the end you should start with HoN as it's much more similar.

There is a garena version of LoL?
If you plan on playing dota 2 in the end you should start with dota 1 not hon, as it's much more similar.

I really enjoy LoL but since I started SC2 I never play anymore, heh.

Don't worry about which champion(s) to play - figure out what you like to do and go from there. The most complicated calculations and micro in LoL pale in comparison to what you do in Starcraft. Find a cool looking dude or a guy with a cool skillset and work your way up. If you do happen to start with a high skill-cap champion (say, one with lots of skillshots and positioning necessary) then playing others will become a cakewalk.

noo dont join the bandwagon T.T
If you want a challenging and much more rewarding game, you should play DoTA.
IMO, Riot Gaming made LoL imbalanced on purpose because more expensive heroes naturally have to be better than the cheaper ones. Sure it's a good free game but it's so inferior to DoTA

I would play DotA, but I don't even have Warcraft 3 to begin with (though I could pirate the game). But even through that game I need Garena to play DotA since it gives me better latency.

I could give DotA 2 a shot, but I have no beta key yet.

You know we have a whole forum

welcome, its a fun game.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

And yes, if you want to play DOTA 2 in the end, you might as well play DOTA because it's pretty much the same heroes with some new additions and adjustments.

Really? That's a load of bull. Almost all new heroes are max price but (slowly) get lower in time. It's a myth and usually advocated by LoL-haters (Or Dota fanboys)

Anyways, I play both LoL and Dota 2 (Beta) and I can give you some insight.

Personally I find LoL more fun than Dota. There's a few reasons why:

1. Masteries and runes, these impact the game a lot and are fun to play around with. A great addition to make many heroes feel more personal. You will feel great when you finish your first rune page for your main hero. This doesn't exist in Dota and probably never will. (Dota fans are so hardcore that even slightest change to game would cause a shitstorm.)

2. I'm not sure about the numbers here, but it feels like 30% of the heros (Especially AGI / STR heroes) in Dota have 2 passives. Since your not experienced in Moba, you might not think about it, but since I play both extensively, I've noticed that Heroes in LoL are simply more FUN to play. In LoL it's very rare for a character to have a passive (All characters have automatically 1 passive, I'm talking about the skills you level up.) Add the summoner spells, which adds up to 6 active abilities + a hero unique passive. Compare that to the 2 active abilities a GOOD chunk of heroes in Dota 2 have. (INT heroes tend to have only 1 passive max or 4 actives like in LoL.)

3. Games are faster in LoL. In my experience, the average LoL game goes around 30-35 mins. A Dota game averages 45-60 minutes easily. This is due to a larger map, and no surrender mechanic. (In LoL, your team can give up, in Dota you can't and are forced to play untill the bitter end.) And trust me, in both LoL and Dota, once your team is 12-3 against the opponent team after 10 minutes, you wish the mechanic would be there.

And don't think longer games means more action or anything like that. The longer games are due to it's harder to push into victory in Dota. (Which granted gives more of a chance for comebacks) Which usually means that even though your team will most likely not win, it will take ages for the game to end. Same thing if your winning. Something that will get annoying after you've played numerous games.

Both games are relatively low skillcap compared to games like SC2 and BW. It doesen't take long to learn and it's more or less about knowing what your opponent heroes can do. The true skill in LoL / Dota come from the teamplay and knowing team comps. But the individual skillcap is very easily reached. Knowing how to work as a team is not.

And most people would argue that Dota requires more skill than LoL. And they follow it by saying that denying doesn't exist in LoL. And I would have to say I agree. Just remember though that in LoL, most characters have 6 active skills most of the time, while a good chunk of Dota heroes have only 2-3, which also means that to use your hero to 100% is probably harder in LoL.

Here is the most important: Don't play LoL to prepare for Dota. They are way too different. LoL has it's own thing going on. The game flows in a entirely different way. Yes, they are both MOBA games but the way heroes are designed and with the masteries, summoners, runes, buffs, dragon, smaller map etc. The game just isn't like Dota.

Anyways, I'm sure you will like both games. I personally just find LoL more enjoyable as of now.

Maybe you should try starting with a melee character so that you don't feel gimped by range every time you use one. I started out with a ranged character (and I main Tristana) and playing melee can be pretty painful.

i started playing league too 2-3 days ago because all my friends started playing it. it is pretty fun especially with a 5 man team and all with skype on

it's definitely a different type of fun compared to sc partly because it's more social, plus i found it a lot less tiring too. it also helps if you have friends willing to guide you through the game, what to do, what the terms mean, what runes to get etc.

as for champions, just try them out until you find you like one.

hope you have fun!

Comparing LoL to DOTA, DOTA2, HoN etc. and suggesting him to play another one based on skill level is like comparing BW with SC2, telling him to try something else because its better/easier/etc. only because you think one game is better than the other.

I played LoL to level 30 but never got into ranked. I then tried HoN and loved it so much more. Its much faster paced and simply more fun for me. My friend started with LoL and played to level 10 before trying HoN and liking it much more than LoL. Personally HoN is better, but thats just me.

LoL was really easy for me, i got on one night, took on kassidin as my hero, and just destroyed even though it was my frist time. The game is simple, the people aren't too too competivie even at the higher levels so its great for blowing off steam, but not so great for playing really hard core. I'd say go with DotA 1 or 2 or HoN. Its up to you, but LoL and its micro transactions really piss me off.
User was warned for too many mimes.

LoL and DotA are both awesome games. I would recommend LoL instead of DotA unless you are highly competitive. DotA is a very deep game, and can be mentally draining and frustrating. LoL is much more suited if you want to play a couple games on your spare time. You are able to get the hang of things within your first 100 games. The best thing about LoL is the community. TL has a great LoL community. Our DotA community isn't nearly as active, but that might change once DotA 2 is officially released. If DotA doesn't end up being big on TL, you'll fit in with us a lot better with LoL. With LoL, you can easily find a lot of IRL friends that play it, or you can get people to start playing it. All moba games are 100x more fun to play with a group of friends than it is in pub games. If you play DotA, it may be quite hard finding irl friends that play it.

Play what you fucking want. I love LoL and DoTA. I have always said LoL = TF2, DoTA = CS 1.6. They are both fun games that you can enjoy. I hate all the DoTA > LoL or vice versa, they are fucking games enjoy what you want. Also what Chariman Ray said is point on.

Centaur, dragonknight, leoric, dirge, axe, bristleback and brewmaster are examples of tanks in dota. However dota isn't as rigid so there are viable strategies other than having 1 tank, 1 support, 1 magic dps, 1 physical dps and a jungler.
