i am so happy these days, and it makes me marvel at the birth lottery. i lucked out, i really did. i am so ludicrously well off considering the amount of effort/seriousness i've ever put into anything.
these are the things i've earnestly pursued in my life:
- tvz & zvt in broodwar
- a few music song things
- self-actualizing
- cataloging experiences/sensations
-

look at this list, it's the most self-centered and useless shit. i did almost literally nothing during college except jerk off and get high and somehow finished an (albeit shit) degree. i haven't been sober for longer than a month in three years and i have a fulltime job that is easy and pays well. factor in my relations and low standards and i will never have to worry about money in my life. i overcame existential angst because i'm smart enough to understand camus, but not smart enough to delve into the rabbit hole of 'real' philosophy. i frequently blow off even my best friends because i happened to meet extremely cool people that always forgive me for it. what the fuck?

all i care about in life right now is pursuing young artistic cute women and what an absurd... luxury that is!

in the sirens of titan, the greatest sin in vonnegut's invented religion ("The Church of God the Utterly Indifferent") is to attribute positive twists of fate to your own doing, and believe that anyone deserves anything that happens to them. i think about this all the time, but i don't know what to do with this information. do i apologize? am i wasting something? my friends with more productive jobs and higher status seem so unhappy still, but i'm fine. is a life happily lived worth it already? is it complacency to aspire for the most important thing, happiness, and then just be completely satisfied once you hit it?

edit: i'm not a girl, but you can continue being weirdly nice to me because of the 1% uncertainty. makes the internet a much more pleasant place.

Why do you think the most important thing is happiness?

Sometimes I wish I weren't as well off as I am.

If you're able to type what you just did on a computer and post it freely, you're a lot more well off than you probably think.

I think happiness is my personal definition of not wasting anything as long as I can sustain myself in the situation I attain it. My second priorities would be seeking a wider range of human experience or perhaps working to improve society or the lives of other, more destitute beings. I think the degree of complacency one feels when reaching a zenith (like being truly happy) is partially equal to the effort or work you feel like you put into getting there. It seems more likely to me to attain happiness through happenstance rather than focused effort and thus those who've attained happiness are less likely to feel complacent about their situation. I don't see having a good life in and of itself as being a driving force towards doing something more, whatever that may be, to improve upon it.

It's at times like these I get frustrated at myself for not being better at English so that I may communicate my thoughts more clearly.
The cur foretells the knell of parting day; The loafing herd winds slowly o'er the lea; The wise man homeward plods; I only stay to fiddle-faddle in a minor key.

It seems self evident that if you are even thinking to ask
is a life happily lived worth it already?
then the answer is of course not.

However, if you lack the inner nagging feeling to pursue why, then there's nothing to be done.

I'd agree with what EatThePath has said. I often feel pretty damn lucky to get to do the range of things I do, and like I have too many good things to choose between. A friend passed on some good advice in that regard, that of just stating your purpose in life in a short sentence (without commas). His was just 'Do interesting things.' and he feels very lucky to get to

LOL Huk, letting intrigue know who the real boss is? XD

@intrigue Shit man, I'm not sure if it's what you mean, but I think I understand the sensation that you've somehow lucked your way into a fantastic life(style). I'd give 5 for similarity to own life, but I'm gonna give 1 because I'll tell you the same thing I want to tell myself: Time to get up off your ass and work hard so that you stop feeling guilty >.<

Of course, don't mind me, I'm just a complete stranger, so I'm probably completely misunderstanding your scenario/intentions

Edit: mannnn, just found out intrigue's a girl, now pretty much the first half of this post seems irrelevant :/ nvm, still relevant :D

I hope pursuing young artistic cute women is a valid goal or I'm doing it wrong.
Just about to finish sputtering through my own program and I feel the same way.
I am happy when I have no work to do and nothing to accomplish and I can float around with my friends.
Your fortunate to have been wired to feel satisfied with similar things.
The only thing that might go wrong would be feeling like you need something more in a few years.

I don`t want this sentence to weigh too heavy, so I will also tell you this: trying to hit on young artistic women sounds lifeimproving too.

i don't know how to explain this, but it seems so obvious in my head. you spend most of the time dead, billions and billions of years of it. i don't know, maybe some of your atoms will become part of another living being in a few million years because they ate something you became a part of! anyhow

the crazy biological structures in my head apparently find it important to invest resources into maintaining this illusion of consciousness. i have a degree of agency in my decisions, and some choices reward my dopamine circuits and feel so gooodd. others feel neutral or are boring. why not abuse the system for pleasure? man, what a dumb answer. how about i don't know

yeah i thought that too, maybe still do. i don't do anything about it though. i am not noble of spirit enough to want to help people. i like to tell myself i know allll about the plight of mankind as if this awareness automatically makes me compassionate. i care a lot about the condition of myself and the people i entangle myself with, but outside of that LOL gl.

i remember when i was younger i was an EMT, and people would always be like 'oh you thank you for your dedication and service, i'm glad there's people that actually care'. but i didn't. i did it so people thought i was a good person, and it would look good on my resume. so i stopped.

i don't even know which reasons for this approach to life are rationalizations or powerful defense mechanisms and which are valid. anyhow, just wanted to air some of these observations. good talk

Not to derail too much, but for you as a person, what's more important than happiness? Isn't that kind of the goal of life, to achieve complete happiness and satisfaction with yourself?

People find that in different ways, but it's still all the same thing in the end, imo.

Doesn't sound like a very meaningful existence to me. Don't you ever get bored? Isn't there a certain pleasure in experiences the variety of human existence, including sadness and anger? Is it happiness, or is it just complacency? It sounds impossible to be happy all the time, because the simple fact of having only one emotion would make me dissatisfied. Perhaps you have varying degrees of happiness, ranging from mildly amused to jubilant. Or maybe you do consider what most people consider sadness as a form of happiness?

Well, you don't have to feel guilty about it, but I think you're wrong about it having to do with your intelligence. It is more a matter of knowledge which shapes us, and knowledge can be acquired by nearly anyone. Knowledge nearly always makes things more unhappy.

That's ridiculously narrow minded. You are assuming that all goals will bring you happiness, but some people have lifelong pursuits which don't necessarily bring them happiness. Say you want to help people. Maybe in another country with a lot of war. You could go there and do your best, but in the end the people you try to help are not much better off and the country as a whole is still fucked. You did exactly what you wanted to do, your part in the social system of humanity, but you still feel like shit because it wasn't enough. But you didn't go there because you wanted to feel happy. You could just take drugs your whole life if that was all that mattered. You wanted to do something that changed some part of the world in some way, because as humans, we often find it important to matter to others, and to impart some kindness to our race as a whole. We call people who don't sociopaths. There is the Seinfeld episode about it being impossible not to do anything for your own happiness, but take a step back from that and ask if anyone is necessarily doing it for their own happiness, or if that is a byproduct and there are much more efficient ways to guarantee personal 'happiness.' I would argue there are a great deal of things which never really bring happiness, but which are important to the function of our society.

The goal isn't happiness, it's just a byproduct. The goal was the thing that you actually did with your life.

Consider that in 1000 years no one will remember who you were, what you did, or any other detail about your life. Ben Franklin once wrote, "if you are not to be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten/ Either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing". But even this is a farce, 10,000 years from now (assuming humanity survives that long) few but the most devoted historians will remember even immensly influential people like George Washington. Those great discoveries and inventions will become one of millions of the like, many of the greatest scientists will be forgotten. Some may have their work live on, other's legacy will be destroyed and eternally forgotten like so many builders and academics of Rome. That is the crisis faced by Camus's absurd man, to spend a lifetime toiling away for a potentially meaningless existance.

But in some small way, everyone of us will contribute to the growth and advancment of humanity. Even the dead and forgotten of Rome helped in some way to build an empire that would lay the foundation for modern Europe, build the roads that would help the continent survive the dark ages. As long as you believe you are contributing to society, your is life as well spent as it should be. Don't be swayed by fast cars and big houses, as Aristotle once said “Time crumbles things; everything grows old and is forgotten under the power of time.”

Happiness is an illusion. I know a friend of the family, a single investment banker with no children who retired very young on a decent pile of money with the rest of his life to spend on his hobbies and persuing his wants. He is now an unhappy, lonely old person who wastes away his time on pointless things. My aunt is a strikingly similar story. When someone is given what they most desired, they most often find themselves utterly unhappy.

True "happiness" is about balance. We all need to be challenged in life; not to endure hardship but to face those day to day difficulties and use our minds to find solutions. We need that sense of satisfaction in accomplishing our goals, working to save up for that new PC, finishing our projects and what we need to accomplish to free up some time for a game of SC. There's a reason that the very wealthy old lonely woman has become a cliche. The truth is that is is reality. When we are given everything we want our lives lose their meaning. Real happiness is about finding the balance that works for each of us, and avoiding the traps of ego and self importance that will inevitable side track our search for that balance.

Sometimes I wish I weren't as well off as I am.

Not to derail too much, but for you as a person, what's more important than happiness? Isn't that kind of the goal of life, to achieve complete happiness and satisfaction with yourself?

People find that in different ways, but it's still all the same thing in the end, imo.

See, there is already the problem.

You have to distuingish between "Happiness" and "Satisfaction". What you are talking about would rather be, given the "general definition", more like satisfaction, since it doesn't give you the kick general happines gives you but you are still satisfied in a way, because you help people.

As I already said, the OP's question is loaded with stuff that we would have to determine and discuss first that we simply can't just answer it by saying something you picked up by your parents or something.
This is a philosophical question that is being discussed for hundreds, thousands of years and there's a reason OP is seeking for "help":
You simply cannot answer it. At least not without looking for what others already "discovered", thought of and so on... you gotta study this shit!

Why do you care?

Yes, if a life lived happily is worth living for you it's fine to live your life like that.

So, my guess is you care because:
1. You feel it's ok to live you life anyway you want but you are aware of different opinions and you are uncertain;
2. You live your life as if you don't care but you feel you should. In this case the answer to your question is "no".
3. You don't. And this is a brag post

all i care about in life right now is pursuing young artistic cute women and what an absurd... luxury that is!

edit: i'm not a girl, but you can continue being weirdly nice to me because of the 1% uncertainty. makes the internet a much more pleasant place.

- that is a nice goal to have for a braintwisting adventure, young artistic cute women always have a certain flaw/insecurity to them, hence why theyre being artistic to fill that hole with to begin with. Risk vs reward though, especially when you land on the one that is open-minded, artistic, cute, with a really confined private space/shell yet open to discuss/share it, given that you are susceptible and accept to deal with it
(i was in a relationship with a graphic designer last year when i was still in art uni >_>)

- I'll be nice. I would love to remix some Castles stuff, should you be kind enough to provide stems <_<
