Hi, i recently acquired a new computer, along with that came a 24" monitor widescreen..
I am enjoying this having come from a 17" but my worries are that the monitor is too big to be efficient for playing at a professional level of SC.
Are my fears just, or am i just worried? do other pros play with a big monitor?

the standard is 16 : 9 for being able to see the most (physical) pixels in a game of sc2, but i think the standard issue monitors are 23 inch, so you should be all set!

I believe vibe plays on a 24''

most former bw pros play on fairly small monitors I believe. Or they play with the window sized quite small.

Ya you can find smaller but the standard is 23'' so you will be fine, enjoy the bigger monitor
As long as it is a 16 monitor you're fine for sc2 as long as it's not like a 42'' tv or something lol.

for the most part all the high def streams are using 1920x1080 capable monitors I believe. So it's all what you can get used to, hardware shouldn't hinder you if your use to it.

Zach, I believe it should be fine, but TBH its all what you are comfortable with, and what is easiest for YOU. It is personal just like a mouse or keyboard, or soccer cleats, or baseball gloves, etc.

I recently switched from my HPv17" monitor to this new 23" HP monitor i bought off for 120$ in Christmas, i started using both as dual monitors, i started playing on the bigger monitor and using the smaller one for looking up stuff/more space, after 3 days of practicing with the new monitor i got better and it and say its an improvement after 3 days because of all the extra space it gives you, dont worry bout the switch you will get used to it very soon

You think it's too big, and then you can never go back to anything smaller

It should be personal preference, and you should be able to get used to it. Although if you ever downsize, the extra inches will be missed.

I dont have a source for this but dont 16:10 aspect ratio monitors render a larger game area? meaning people with monitors at this aspect ratio can see more of the game without scrolling than people with 16: 9. It might be the other way around i dont remember lol.

I remember this being the case in the beta, i don't know if its changed since then though.

I recently went from ~16 inch fairly low def monitor to a 26 inch 1080p monitor and the difference is astonishing. Actually playing for me is much easier (microing can be a lot more sensitive) and more enjoyable to literally sit back and watch the replays and change my physical perspective while not losing track of any numbers (supply, minerals, gas, minimal blips).

If you will also be using it as a platform to watch streams as you would TV, sitting away from the computer, it is very nice to have "TV" sized monitors to go grab a bag of chips and hit the couch to enjoy some streaming action.

its gonna be big for you at first but you get used to it. i have two 23'' and have for over and year and i love em. 24'' is even better cuz you'll have the proper resolution support unlike my fukked up 1980x1120 or some shit x.x

I have a 24" monitor and I don't think it's a problem. Your distance to the monitor also matters of course. 24" is good, but my cousin has a 27" monitor and I couldn't imagine playing games on it.

I always found that smaller monitors were less straining on my eyes - but if you sit a comfortable distance away from a 24'' monitor it shouldn't be too bad.

Another issue is the 1920x1080 resolution. With a smaller monitor and native resolution, you move your mouse and it goes half the screen. With higher resolution, you move the mouse and it goes 1/3 or 1/4.

Surprised no "Size doesn't matter" joke yet.

Serious though, it might seem huge, but couple hours of playtime you never want to go back to smaller.

Also you can set 16: 9 resolution even on 16:10 monitor.

You get used to it fast, also make sure its 16: 9 (or set to 16: 9 if it isn't naturally). I've been using a 24" 1920x1080 since I got into sc2 beta.

Theoretically, the 16:10 should show more of the game at once. If you multiply the numbers, 16x9 is less than 16x10, which makes me think so. It's more pixels being drawn at 16:10.

Please not. Look at the picture above. The game always shows the same height, but more width, so the higher the relation towards the width, the more you see.

I switched from 17" on my BW comp to 24"wide on my sc2 comp and bot feels pretty ideal for each game. Playing BW on 24" would probably be a bit too big but I guess you can get used to that aswell. But BW was made for 15-17" monitors and I guess SC2 was most likely made for 24"wide or something around that size.

ratio is different from monitor size... its depend on monitor size so that you judge the distance from your head to monitor. normally anything above 19' would cause you trouble in sc2 bc ur eyes will have to move around more than normal.

Personally im on a 14' laptop and its still 16 : 9. My eyes dont need to move as much and i could have the screen a bit closer (its a laptop anyway...)... I imagine 24' you would have to sit 2 meters away from screen to get same effect.

Why does 16:10 seem to be compacted more than 16 in the GIF above?

Anything smaller then 20" makes me not even want to use a computer since I've gotten my 24", pretty much shelved my laptop for this reason lol

But yeah I play SC2 on my monitor and I think it looks great, awesome for watching streams too

Because it is.

Basically, the closer the aspect ratio is to 1:1, the more "square" the screen will be. 16:10 is closer to being square than 16: 9, so 16: 9 is more rectangular and shows more area. You will actually get more physical inches of viewing space on a 16:10 but it will be a smaller area in-game. If you look at the picture above, that's basically what it is showing.

4:3 = 1.33:1
16:10 = 1.6:1
16: 9 = 1.78:1

Depends how game is programmed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_of_view_in_video_games

But either way you can set a 16x10 to 16x9 and not the other way around so I'd always opt for a 16:10. Not to mention all good quality wide gamut IPS monitors are 16:10.

Yup this. It doesn't hurt my play at all. I know when I first got a 24 inch 3-4 years ago it was really weird but after a few days I got used to it and forgot it was even 24 inches. Whenever someone see's my monitor I forget its bigger then most people's around here and they always go 'holy shit your monitor is huge!"
